An effective algorithm is presented for solving the Beltrami equation fzbar = mu fz in a planar disk. The algorithm involves no evaluation of singular integrals. The strategy, working in concentric rings, is to construct a piecewise linear mu-conform
al mapping and then correct the image using a known algorithm for conformal mappings. Numerical examples are provided and the computational complexity is analyzed.
Discontinuous Petrov Galerkin (DPG) methods are made easily implementable using `broken test spaces, i.e., spaces of functions with no continuity constraints across mesh element interfaces. Broken spaces derivable from a standard exact sequence of fi
rst order (unbroken) Sobolev spaces are of particular interest. A characterization of interface spaces that connect the broken spaces to their unbroken counterparts is provided. Stability of certain formulations using the broken spaces can be derived from the stability of analogues that use unbroken spaces. This technique is used to provide a complete error analysis of DPG methods for Maxwell equations with perfect electric boundary conditions. The technique also permits considerable simplifications of previous analyses of DPG methods for other equations. Reliability and efficiency estimates for an error indicator also follow. Finally, the equivalence of stability for various formulations of the same Maxwell problem is proved, including the strong form, the ultraweak form, and a spectrum of forms in between.
We present a computational framework for analysing thin shell structures using the finite element method. The framework is based on a mesh-dependent shell model which we derive from the general laws of three-dimensional elasticity. We apply the frame
work for the so called Girkmann benchmark problem involving a spherical shell stiffened with a foot ring. In particular, we compare the accuracy of different reduced strain four-node elements in this context. We conclude that the performance of the bilinear shell finite elements depends on the mesh quality but reasonable accuracy of the quantities of interest of the Girkmann problem can be attained in contrast to earlier results obtained with general shell elements for the problem.
In limited data computerized tomography, the 2D or 3D problem can be reduced to a family of 1D problems using the differentiated backprojection (DBP) method. Each 1D problem consists of recovering a compactly supported function $f in L^2(mathcal F)$,
where $mathcal F$ is a finite interval, from its partial Hilbert transform data. When the Hilbert transform is measured on a finite interval $mathcal G$ that only overlaps but does not cover $mathcal F$ this inversion problem is known to be severely ill-posed [1]. In this paper, we study the reconstruction of $f$ restricted to the overlap region $mathcal F cap mathcal G$. We show that with this restriction and by assuming prior knowledge on the $L^2$ norm or on the variation of $f$, better stability with Holder continuity (typical for mildly ill-posed problems) can be obtained.
We develop two classes of composite moment-free numerical quadratures for computing highly oscillatory integrals having integrable singularities and stationary points. The first class of the quadrature rules has a polynomial order of convergence and
the second class has an exponential order of convergence. We first modify the moment-free Filon-type method for the oscillatory integrals without a singularity or a stationary point to accelerate their convergence. We then consider the oscillatory integrals without a singularity or a stationary point and then those with singularities and stationary points. The composite quadrature rules are developed based on partitioning the integration domain according to the wave number and the singularity of the integrand. The integral defined on a subinterval has either a weak singularity without rapid oscillation or oscillation without a singularity. The classical quadrature rules for weakly singular integrals using graded points are employed for the singular integral without rapid oscillation and the modified moment-free Filon-type method is used for the oscillatory integrals without a singularity. Unlike the existing methods, the proposed methods do not have to compute the inverse of the oscillator. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the approximation accuracy and the computational efficiency of the proposed methods. Numerical results show that the proposed methods outperform methods published most recently.
We introduce a new density for the representation of quantum states on phase space. It is constructed as a weighted difference of two smooth probability densities using the Husimi function and first-order Hermite spectrograms. In contrast to the Wign
er function, it is accessible by sampling strategies for positive densities. In the semiclassical regime, the new density allows to approximate expectation values to second order with respect to the high frequency parameter and is thus more accurate than the uncorrected Husimi function. As an application, we combine the new phase space density with Egorovs theorem for the numerical simulation of time-evolved quantum expectations by an ensemble of classical trajectories. We present supporting numerical experiments in different settings and dimensions.
The Leja method is a polynomial interpolation procedure that can be used to compute matrix functions. In particular, computing the action of the matrix exponential on a given vector is a typical application. This quantity is required, e.g., in expone
ntial integrators. The Leja method essentially depends on three parameters: the scaling parameter, the location of the interpolation points, and the degree of interpolation. We present here a backward error analysis that allows us to determine these three parameters as a function of the prescribed accuracy. Additional aspects that are required for an efficient and reliable implementation are discussed. Numerical examples that illustrate the performance of our Matlab code are included.
This paper describes a new efficient conjugate subgradient algorithm which minimizes a convex function containing a least squares fidelity term and an absolute value regularization term. This method is successfully applied to the inversion of ill-con
ditioned linear problems, in particular for computed tomography with the dictionary learning method. A comparison with other state-of-art methods shows a significant reduction of the number of iterations, which makes this algorithm appealing for practical use.
The Immersed Boundary method is a simple, efficient, and robust numerical scheme for solving PDE in general domains, yet it only achieves first-order spatial accuracy near embedded boundaries. In this paper, we introduce a new high-order numerical me
thod which we call the Immersed Boundary Smooth Extension (IBSE) method. The IBSE method achieves high-order accuracy by smoothly extending the unknown solution of the PDE from a given smooth domain to a larger computational domain, enabling the use of simple Cartesian-grid discretizations (e.g. Fourier spectral methods). The method preserves much of the flexibility and robustness of the original IB method. In particular, it requires minimal geometric information to describe the boundary and relies only on convolution with regularized delta-functions to communicate information between the computational grid and the boundary. We present a fast algorithm for solving elliptic equations, which forms the basis for simple, high-order implicit-time methods for parabolic PDE and implicit-explicit methods for related nonlinear PDE. We apply the IBSE method to solve the Poisson, heat, Burgers, and Fitzhugh-Nagumo equations, and demonstrate fourth-order pointwise convergence for Dirichlet problems and third-order pointwise convergence for Neumann problems.
We present a simple mathematical framework and API for parallel mesh and data distribution, load balancing, and overlap generation. It relies on viewing the mesh as a Hasse diagram, abstracting away information such as cell shape, dimension, and coor
dinates. The high level of abstraction makes our interface both concise and powerful, as the same algorithm applies to any representable mesh, such as hybrid meshes, meshes embedded in higher dimension, and overlapped meshes in parallel. We present evidence, both theoretical and experimental, that the algorithms are scalable and efficient. A working implementation can be found in the latest release of the PETSc libraries.
