In the sixth-generation (6G) era, emerging large-scale computing based applications (for example processing enormous amounts of images in real-time in autonomous driving) tend to lead to excessive energy consumption for the end users, whose devices a re usually energy-constrained. In this context, energy-efficiency becomes a critical challenge to be solved for harnessing these promising applications to realize green 6G networks. As a remedy, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) have been proposed for improving the energy efficiency by beneficially reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment. In conventional RIS solutions, however, the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) sometimes may even become degraded. This is because the signals impinging upon an RIS are typically contaminated by interfering signals which are usually dynamic and unknown. To address this issue, `learning the properties of the surrounding spectral environment is a promising solution, motivating the convergence of artificial intelligence and spectrum sensing, termed here as spectrum learning (SL). Inspired by this, we develop an SL-aided RIS framework for intelligently exploiting the inherent characteristics of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum for green 6G networks. Given the proposed framework, the RIS controller becomes capable of intelligently `{think-and-decide} whether to reflect or not the incident signals. Therefore, the received SINR can be improved by dynamically configuring the binary ON-OFF status of the RIS elements. The energy-efficiency benefits attained are validated with the aid of a specific case study. Finally, we conclude with a list of promising future research directions.

Terrestrial communication networks have experienced significant development in recent years by providing emerging services for ground users. However, one critical challenge raised is to provide full coverage (especially in dense high-rise urban envir onments) for ground users due to scarce network resources and limited coverage. To meet this challenge, we propose a high altitude platform (HAP)-reserved ground-air-space (GAS) transmission scheme, which combines with the ground-to-space (G2S) transmission scheme to strengthen the terrestrial communication and save the transmission power. To integrate the two transmission schemes, we propose a transmission control strategy. Wherein, the ground user decides its transmission scheme, i.e., switches between the GAS link transmission and the G2S link transmission with a probability. We then maximize the overall throughput and derive the optimal probability that a ground user adopts the GAS transmission scheme. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed transmission control strategy.
Space information networks (SIN) are facing an ever-increasing thirst for high-speed and high-capacity seamless data transmission due to the integration of ground, air, and space communications. However, this imposes a new paradigm on the architectur e design of the integrated SIN. Recently, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) and mobile edge computing (MEC) are the most promising techniques, conceived to improve communication and computation capability by reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment and offloading. Hence, converging RISs and MEC in SIN is becoming an effort to reap the double benefits of computation and communication. In this article, we propose an RIS-assisted collaborative MEC architecture for SIN and discuss its implementation. Then we present its potential benefits, major challenges, and feasible applications. Subsequently, we study different cases to evaluate the system data rate and latency. Finally, we conclude with a list of open issues in this research area.
Recently, significant research attention has been devoted to the study of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which are capable of reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment by exploiting the unique properties of metamaterials-based i ntegrated large arrays of inexpensive antennas. Existing research demonstrates that RISs significantly improve the physical layer performance, including the wireless coverage, achievable data rate and energy efficiency. However, the medium access control (MAC) of multiple users accessing an RIS-enabled channel is still in its infancy, while many open issues remain to be addressed. In this article, we present four typical RIS-aided multi-user scenarios with special emphasis on the MAC schemes. We then propose and elaborate upon centralized, distributed and hybrid artificial-intelligence (AI)-assisted MAC architectures in RIS-aided multi-user communications systems. Finally, we discuss some challenges, perspectives and potential applications of RISs as they are related to MAC design.
In this paper, we propose a transfer learning (TL)-enabled edge-CNN framework for 5G industrial edge networks with privacy-preserving characteristic. In particular, the edge server can use the existing image dataset to train the CNN in advance, which is further fine-tuned based on the limited datasets uploaded from the devices. With the aid of TL, the devices that are not participating in the training only need to fine-tune the trained edge-CNN model without training from scratch. Due to the energy budget of the devices and the limited communication bandwidth, a joint energy and latency problem is formulated, which is solved by decomposing the original problem into an uploading decision subproblem and a wireless bandwidth allocation subproblem. Experiments using ImageNet demonstrate that the proposed TL-enabled edge-CNN framework can achieve almost 85% prediction accuracy of the baseline by uploading only about 1% model parameters, for a compression ratio of 32 of the autoencoder.
The aerial-terrestrial communication system constitutes an efficient paradigm for supporting and complementing terrestrial communications. However, the benefits of such a system cannot be fully exploited, especially when the line-of-sight (LoS) trans missions are prone to severe deterioration due to complex propagation environments in urban areas. The emerging technology of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) has recently become a potential solution to mitigate propagation-induced impairments and improve wireless network coverage. Motivated by these considerations, in this paper, we address the coverage and link performance problems of the aerial-terrestrial communication system by proposing an RIS-assisted transmission strategy. In particular, we design an adaptive RIS-assisted transmission protocol, in which the channel estimation, transmission strategy, and data transmission are independently implemented in a frame. On this basis, we formulate an RIS-assisted transmission strategy optimization problem as a mixed-integer non-linear program (MINLP) to maximize the overall system throughput. We then employ multi-task learning to speed up the solution to the problem. Benefiting from multi-task learning, the computation time is reduced by about four orders of magnitude. Numerical results show that the proposed RIS-assisted transmission protocol significantly improves the system throughput and reduces the transmit power.
Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising reflective radio technology for improving the coverage and rate of future wireless systems by reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment. The current work mainly focuses on the physical layer design of RIS. However, enabling multiple devices to communicate with the assistance of RIS is a crucial challenging problem. Motivated by this, we explore RIS-assisted communications at the medium access control (MAC) layer and propose an RIS-assisted MAC framework. In particular, RISassisted transmissions are implemented by pre-negotiation and a multi-dimension reservation (MDR) scheme. Based on this, we investigate RIS-assisted single-channel multi-user (SCMU) communications. Wherein the RIS regarded as a whole unity can be reserved by one user to support the multiple data transmissions, thus achieving high efficient RIS-assisted connections at the user. Moreover, under frequency-selective channels, implementing the MDR scheme on the RIS group division, RISassisted multi-channel multi-user (MCMU) communications are further explored to improve the service efficiency of the RIS and decrease the computation complexity. Besides, a Markov chain is built based on the proposed RIS-assisted MAC framework to analyze the system performance of SCMU/MCMU. Then the optimization problem is formulated to maximize the overall system capacity of SCMU/MCMU with energy-efficient constraint. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has become a promising technology for enhancing the reliability of wireless communications, which is capable of reflecting the desired signals through appropriate phase shifts. However, the intended signals th at impinge upon an RIS are often mixed with interfering signals, which are usually dynamic and unknown. In particular, the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) may be degraded by the signals reflected from the RISs that originate from non-intended users. To tackle this issue, we introduce the concept of intelligent spectrum learning (ISL), which uses an appropriately trained convolutional neural network (CNN) at the RIS controller to help the RISs infer the interfering signals directly from the incident signals. By capitalizing on the ISL, a distributed control algorithm is proposed to maximize the received SINR by dynamically configuring the active/inactive binary status of the RIS elements. Simulation results validate the performance improvement offered by deep learning and demonstrate the superiority of the proposed ISL-aided approach.

In a level-5 autonomous driving system, the autonomous driving vehicles (AVs) are expected to sense the surroundings via analyzing a large amount of data captured by a variety of onboard sensors in near-real-time. As a result, enormous computing cost s will be introduced to the AVs for processing the tasks with the deployed machine learning (ML) model, while the inference accuracy may not be guaranteed. In this context, the advent of edge intelligence (EI) and sixth-generation (6G) wireless networking are expected to pave the way to more reliable and safer autonomous driving by providing multi-access edge computing (MEC) together with ML to AVs in close proximity. To realize this goal, we propose a two-tier EI-empowered autonomous driving framework. In the autonomous-vehicles tier, the autonomous vehicles are deployed with the shallow layers by splitting the trained deep neural network model. In the edge-intelligence tier, an edge server is implemented with the remaining layers (also deep layers) and an appropriately trained multi-task learning (MTL) model. In particular, obtaining the optimal offloading strategy (including the binary offloading decision and the computational resources allocation) can be formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, which is solved via MTL in near-real-time with high accuracy. On another note, an edge-vehicle joint inference is proposed through neural network segmentation to achieve efficient online inference with data privacy-preserving and less communication delay. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, and open research topics are finally listed.

The empowering unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been extensively used in providing intelligence such as target tracking. In our field experiments, a pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) is deployed at the UAV to identify a target (a veh icle) from the captured video frames and enable the UAV to keep tracking. However, this kind of visual target tracking demands a lot of computational resources due to the desired high inference accuracy and stringent delay requirement. This motivates us to consider offloading this type of deep learning (DL) tasks to a mobile edge computing (MEC) server due to limited computational resource and energy budget of the UAV, and further improve the inference accuracy. Specifically, we propose a novel hierarchical DL tasks distribution framework, where the UAV is embedded with lower layers of the pre-trained CNN model, while the MEC server with rich computing resources will handle the higher layers of the CNN model. An optimization problem is formulated to minimize the weighted-sum cost including the tracking delay and energy consumption introduced by communication and computing of the UAVs, while taking into account the quality of data (e.g., video frames) input to the DL model and the inference errors. Analytical results are obtained and insights are provided to understand the tradeoff between the weighted-sum cost and inference error rate in the proposed framework. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed offloading framework.
