The antikaon-nucleon interaction close to threshold provides crucial information on the interplay between spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking in low-energy QCD. In this context the importance of kaonic deuterium X-ray spectroscopy has b een well recognized, but no experimental results have yet been obtained due to the difficulty of the measurement. We propose to measure the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium 1s state with an accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV respectively at J-PARC. These results together with the kaonic hydrogen data (KpX at KEK, DEAR and SIDDHARTA at DAFNE) will then permit the determination of values of both the isospin I=0 and I=1 antikaon-nucleon scattering lengths and will provide the most stringent constraints on the antikaon-nucleon interaction, promising a breakthrough. Refined Monte Carlo studies were performed, including the investigation of background suppression factors for the described setup. These studies have demonstrated the feasibility of determining the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium atom 1s state with the desired accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV.

We report measurements of parallaxes and proper motions of ten high-mass star-forming regions in the Sagittarius spiral arm of the Milky Way as part of the BeSSeL Survey with the VLBA. Combining these results with eight others from the literature, we investigated the structure and kinematics of the arm between Galactocentric azimuth around -2 and 65 deg. We found that the spiral pitch angle is 7.3 +- 1.5 deg; the arms half-width, defined as the rms deviation from the fitted spiral, is around 0.2 kpc; and the nearest portion of the Sagittarius arm is 1.4 +- 0.2 kpc from the Sun. Unlike for adjacent spiral arms, we found no evidence for significant peculiar motions of sources in the Sagittarius arm opposite to Galactic rotation.

We report trigonometric parallax measurements of masers in the massive star forming complex W43 from VLBA observations as part of the BeSSeL Survey. Based on measurements of three 12 GHz methanol maser sources (G029.86-00.04, G029.95-00.01 and G031.2 8+00.06) and one 22 GHz water maser source (G031.58+00.07) toward W43, we derived a distance of $5.49^{+0.39}_{-0.34}$ kpc to W43. By associating the masers with CO molecular clouds, and associating the clouds kinematically with CO longitude-velocity spiral features, we assign W43 to the Scutum spiral arm, close to the near end of the Galactic bar. The peculiar motion of W43 is about 20 km/s toward the Galactic Center and is very likely induced by the gravitational attraction of the bar.
The possibility of thermal excitation of intrinsic localized modes (ILMs) arising from anharmonicity in ionic perfect crystals is studied numerically for realistic model systems in one and three dimensions. Implications are discussed for an interesti ng high-temperature feature seen in earlier inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystal NaI. The general conclusion is that ILM formation energies are far too large for thermal excitation of ILMs to account for the observed feature in a pure crystal.

A liquid helium-3 target system was developed for experimental studies of kaonic atoms and kaonic nuclei at J-PARC. helium-3 gas is liquefied in a heat exchanger cooled below 3.2 K by decompression of liquid helium-4. To maintain a large acceptance o f the cylindrical detector system for decay particles of kaonic nuclei, efficient heat transport between the separate target cell and the main unit is realized using circulation of liquid helium-3. To minimize the amount of material, a vacuum vessel containing a carbon fiber reinforced plastic cylinder having an inside diameter of 150 mm and a thickness of 1 mm was produced. A target cell made of pure beryllium and beryllium-aluminum alloy was developed not only to minimize the amount of material but to obtain also high x-ray transmission. During a cooling test, the target cell was kept at 1.3 K at a pressure of 33 mbar. The total estimated heat load to the components including the target cell and heat exchanger cooled by liquid helium-4 decompression, was 0.21 W, and the liquid helium-4 consumption rate was 50 L/day.

The inter-layer magnetoresistance in a multilayered massless Dirac fermion system, $alpha$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$, under hydrostatic pressure was investigated. We succeeded in detecting the zero-mode (n=0) Landau level and its spin splitting in the magn etic field normal to the 2D plane. We demonstrated that the effective Coulomb interaction in the magnetic field intensifies the spin splitting of zero-mode Landau carriers. At temperatures below 2K, magnetic fields above several Tesla break the twofold valley degeneracy.

Paleoclimate data show that climate sensitivity is ~3 deg-C for doubled CO2, including only fast feedback processes. Equilibrium sensitivity, including slower surface albedo feedbacks, is ~6 deg-C for doubled CO2 for the range of climate states betwe en glacial conditions and ice-free Antarctica. Decreasing CO2 was the main cause of a cooling trend that began 50 million years ago, large scale glaciation occurring when CO2 fell to 450 +/- 100 ppm, a level that will be exceeded within decades, barring prompt policy changes. If humanity wishes to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed and to which life on Earth is adapted, paleoclimate evidence and ongoing climate change suggest that CO2 will need to be reduced from its current 385 ppm to at most 350 ppm. The largest uncertainty in the target arises from possible changes of non-CO2 forcings. An initial 350 ppm CO2 target may be achievable by phasing out coal use except where CO2 is captured and adopting agricultural and forestry practices that sequester carbon. If the present overshoot of this target CO2 is not brief, there is a possibility of seeding irreversible catastrophic effects.

A search for tribaryon states was performed at KEK-PS. We adopted the $^4$He($K^-_{stopped}, p)$ reaction to populate the states with strangeness -1, charge 0 and isospin 1. No significant narrow structure was observed in the mass region from 3000 to 3200 MeV/c^2 in an inclusive missing mass spectrum. The upper limit of the formation branching ratio was determined to be ($1sim3)times 10^{-4}$, ($0.7sim2)times 10^{-3}$ and ($2sim8) times 10^{-3}$/($stopped K^{-}$) with 95 % confidence level for narrow states with an assumed width of 0, 20 and 40 MeV/c^2, respectively.
