The alpha cluster states of 16C are investigated by using the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. It is shown that two different types of alpha cluster states exist: triangular and linear-chain states. The former has an approximate isosceles triangul ar configuration of alpha particles surrounded by four valence neutrons occupying sd-shell, while the latter has the linearly aligned alpha particles with two sd-shell neutrons and two pf-shell neutrons. It is found that the structure of the linear-chain state is qualitatively understood in terms of the 3/2 pi- and 1/2 sigma- molecular orbit as predicted by molecular-orbital model, but there exists non-negligible Be+alpha+2n correlation. The band-head energies of the triangular and linear-chain rotational bands are 8.0 and 15.5 MeV, and the latter is close to the He+Be threshold energy. It is also shown that the linear-chain state becomes the yrast sstate at J=10 with excitation energy 27.8 MeV owing to its very large moment-of-inertia comparable with hyperdeformation.

We present the observation of an extraordinary luminous soft X-ray transient, MAXI J0158-744, by the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) on 2011 November 11. This transient is characterized by a soft X-ray spectrum, a short duration (1.3 x 10^3 s < Delta T_d < 1.10 x 10^4 s), a very rapid rise (< 5.5 x 10^3 s), and a huge peak luminosity of 2 x 10^40 erg s^-1 in 0.7-7.0 keV band. With Swift observations and optical spectroscopy from the Small and Moderate Aperture Research Telescope System (SMARTS), we confirmed that the transient is a nova explosion, on a white dwarf in a binary with a Be star, located near the Small Magellanic Cloud. An extremely early turn-on of the super-soft X-ray source (SSS) phase (< 0.44 d), the short SSS phase duration of about one month, and a 0.92 keV neon emission line found in the third MAXI scan, 1296 s after the first detection, suggest that the explosion involves a small amount of ejecta and is produced on an unusually massive O-Ne white dwarf close to, or possibly over, the Chandrasekhar limit. We propose that the huge luminosity detected with MAXI was due to the fireball phase, a direct manifestation of the ignition of the thermonuclear runaway process in a nova explosion.

We identified interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) channels in argon dimers after spectator-type resonant Auger decay $2p^{-1}~3d to 3p^{-2}3d, 4d$ in one of the atoms, using momentum resolved electron-ion-ion coincidence. The results illustrate that th e resonant core excitation is a very efficient way of producing slow electrons at a specific site, which may cause localized radiation damage. We find also that ICD rate for $3p^{-2}4d$ is significantly lower than that for $3p^{-2}3d$.
Cluster structure of 16O,18O and 20O is investigated by the antisymmettrized molecular dynamics (AMD) plus generator coordinate method (GCM). We have found the K^{pi}=0$_2^+$ and 0$_1^-$ rotational bands of 18O that have the prominent 14C+alpha clust er structure. Clustering systematics becomes richer in 20O. We suggest the K^{pi}=0$_2^+$ band that is the mixture of the 12C+alpha+4n and 14C+6He cluster structures, and the K^{pi}=0$_1^-$ band that has the 14C+6He cluster structure. The K^{pi}=0$_3^+$ and 0$_2^-$ bands that have the prominent 16C+alpha cluster structure are also found.
