Certificates to a linear algebra computation are additional data structures for each output, which can be used by a-possibly randomized- verification algorithm that proves the correctness of each output. Wiede-manns algorithm projects the Krylov sequ ence obtained by repeatedly multiplying a vector by a matrix to obtain a linearly recurrent sequence. The minimal polynomial of this sequence divides the minimal polynomial of the matrix. For instance, if the $ntimes n$ input matrix is sparse with n 1+o(1) non-zero entries, the computation of the sequence is quadratic in the dimension of the matrix while the computation of the minimal polynomial is n 1+o(1), once that projected Krylov sequence is obtained. In this paper we give algorithms that compute certificates for the Krylov sequence of sparse or structured $ntimes n$ matrices over an abstract field, whose Monte Carlo verification complexity can be made essentially linear. As an application this gives certificates for the determinant, the minimal and characteristic polynomials of sparse or structured matrices at the same cost.
In this paper, we present a novel framework for studying the syntactic completeness of computational effects and we apply it to the exception effect. When applied to the states effect, our framework can be seen as a generalization of Pretnars work on this subject. We first introduce a relative notion of Hilbert-Post completeness, well-suited to the composition of effects. Then we prove that the exception effect is relatively Hilbert-Post complete, as well as the core language which may be used for implementing it; these proofs have been formalized and checked with the proof assistant Coq.
The row (resp. column) rank profile of a matrix describes the staircase shape of its row (resp. column) echelon form. In an ISSAC13 paper, we proposed a recursive Gaussian elimination that can compute simultaneously the row and column rank profiles o f a matrix as well as those of all of its leading sub-matrices, in the same time as state of the art Gaussian elimination algorithms. Here we first study the conditions making a Gaus-sian elimination algorithm reveal this information. Therefore, we propose the definition of a new matrix invariant, the rank profile matrix, summarizing all information on the row and column rank profiles of all the leading sub-matrices. We also explore the conditions for a Gaussian elimination algorithm to compute all or part of this invariant, through the corresponding PLUQ decomposition. As a consequence, we show that the classical iterative CUP decomposition algorithm can actually be adapted to compute the rank profile matrix. Used, in a Crout variant, as a base-case to our ISSAC13 implementation, it delivers a significant improvement in efficiency. Second, the row (resp. column) echelon form of a matrix are usually computed via different dedicated triangular decompositions. We show here that, from some PLUQ decompositions, it is possible to recover the row and column echelon forms of a matrix and of any of its leading sub-matrices thanks to an elementary post-processing algorithm.
We describe in this paper new design techniques used in the cpp exact linear algebra library linbox, intended to make the library safer and easier to use, while keeping it generic and efficient. First, we review the new simplified structure for conta iners, based on our emph{founding scope allocation} model. We explain design choices and their impact on coding: unification of our matrix classes, clearer model for matrices and submatrices, etc Then we present a variation of the emph{strategy} design pattern that is comprised of a controller--plugin system: the controller (solution) chooses among plug-ins (algorithms) that always call back the controllers for subtasks. We give examples using the solution mul. Finally we present a benchmark architecture that serves two purposes: Providing the user with easier ways to produce graphs; Creating a framework for automatically tuning the library and supporting regression testing.
We propose efficient parallel algorithms and implementations on shared memory architectures of LU factorization over a finite field. Compared to the corresponding numerical routines, we have identified three main difficulties specific to linear algeb ra over finite fields. First, the arithmetic complexity could be dominated by modular reductions. Therefore, it is mandatory to delay as much as possible these reductions while mixing fine-grain parallelizations of tiled iterative and recursive algorithms. Second, fast linear algebra variants, e.g., using Strassen-Winograd algorithm, never suffer from instability and can thus be widely used in cascade with the classical algorithms. There, trade-offs are to be made between size of blocks well suited to those fast variants or to load and communication balancing. Third, many applications over finite fields require the rank profile of the matrix (quite often rank deficient) rather than the solution to a linear system. It is thus important to design parallel algorithms that preserve and compute this rank profile. Moreover, as the rank profile is only discovered during the algorithm, block size has then to be dynamic. We propose and compare several block decomposition: tile iterative with left-looking, right-looking and Crout variants, slab and tile recursive. Experiments demonstrate that the tile recursive variant performs better and matches the performance of reference numerical software when no rank deficiency occur. Furthermore, even in the most heterogeneous case, namely when all pivot blocks are rank deficient, we show that it is possbile to maintain a high efficiency.
Computational effects may often be interpreted in the Kleisli category of a monad or in the coKleisli category of a comonad. The duality between monads and comonads corresponds, in general, to a symmetry between construction and observation, for inst ance between raising an exception and looking up a state. Thanks to the properties of adjunction one may go one step further: the coKleisli-on-Kleisli category of a monad provides a kind of observation with respect to a given construction, while dually the Kleisli-on-coKleisli category of a comonad provides a kind of construction with respect to a given observation. In the previous examples this gives rise to catching an exception and updating a state. However, the interpretation of computational effects is usually based on a category which is not self-dual, like the category of sets. This leads to a breaking of the monad-comonad duality. For instance, in a distributive category the state effect has much better properties than the exception effect. This remark provides a novel point of view on the usual mechanism for handling exceptions. The aim of this paper is to build an equational semantics for handling exceptions based on the coKleisli-on-Kleisli category of the monad of exceptions. We focus on n-ary functions and conditionals. We propose a programmers language for exceptions and we prove that it has the required behaviour with respect to n-ary functions and conditionals.
Exception handling is provided by most modern programming languages. It allows to deal with anomalous or exceptional events which require special processing. In computer algebra, exception handling is an efficient way to implement the dynamic evaluat ion paradigm: for instance, in linear algebra, dynamic evaluation can be used for applying programs which have been written for matrices with coefficients in a field to matrices with coefficients in a ring. Thus, a proof system for computer algebra should include a treatement of exceptions, which must rely on a careful description of a semantics of exceptions. The categorical notion of monad can be used for formalizing the raising of exceptions: this has been proposed by Moggi and implemented in Haskell. In this paper, we provide a proof system for exceptions which involves both raising and handling, by extending Moggis approach. Moreover, the core part of this proof system is dual to a proof system for side effects in imperative languages, which relies on the categorical notion of comonad. Both proof systems are implemented in the Coq proof assistant.
The syntax of an imperative language does not mention explicitly the state, while its denotational semantics has to mention it. In this paper we present a framework for the verification in Coq of properties of programs manipulating the global state e ffect. These properties are expressed in a proof system which is close to the syntax, as in effect systems, in the sense that the state does not appear explicitly in the type of expressions which manipulate it. Rather, the state appears via decorations added to terms and to equations. In this system, proofs of programs thus present two aspects: properties can be verified {em up to effects} or the effects can be taken into account. The design of our Coq library consequently reflects these two aspects: our framework is centered around the construction of two inductive and dependent types, one for terms up to effects and one for the manipulation of decorations.
This paper presents equational-based logics for proving first order properties of programming languages involving effects. We propose two dual inference system patterns that can be instanciated with monads or comonads in order to be used for proving properties of different effects. The first pattern provides inference rules which can be interpreted in the Kleisli category of a monad and the coKleisli category of the associated comonad. In a dual way, the second pattern provides inference rules which can be interpreted in the coKleisli category of a comonad and the Kleisli category of the associated monad. The logics combine a 3-tier effect system for terms consisting of pure terms and two other kinds of effects called constructors/observers and modifiers, and a 2-tier system for up-to-effects and strong equations. Each pattern provides generic rules for dealing with any monad (respectively comonad), and it can be extended with specific rules for each effect. The paper presents two use cases: a language with exceptions (using the standard monadic semantics), and a language with state (using the less standard comonadic semantics). Finally, we prove that the obtained inference system for states is Hilbert-Post complete.
Gaussian elimination with full pivoting generates a PLUQ matrix decomposition. Depending on the strategy used in the search for pivots, the permutation matrices can reveal some information about the row or the column rank profiles of the matrix. We p ropose a new pivoting strategy that makes it possible to recover at the same time both row and column rank profiles of the input matrix and of any of its leading sub-matrices. We propose a rank-sensitive and quad-recursive algorithm that computes the latter PLUQ triangular decomposition of an m times n matrix of rank r in O(mnr^{omega-2}) field operations, with omega the exponent of matrix multiplication. Compared to the LEU decomposition by Malashonock, sharing a similar recursive structure, its time complexity is rank sensitive and has a lower leading constant. Over a word size finite field, this algorithm also improveLs the practical efficiency of previously known implementations.
