We present single-crystal neutron scattering measurements of the spin-1/2 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$. Besides confirming that the Co$^{2+}$ magnetic moments lie in the ab plane for zero magnetic field, we deter mine all the exchange parameters of the minimal quasi-2D spin Hamiltonian, which confirms that Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$ is an almost perfect realization of the paradigmatic model of frustrated quantum magnetism. A comparison with linear and nonlinear spin-wave theory reveals that quantum fluctuations induce a strong downward renormalization of the magnon dispersion.
We report the results of a deep SCUBA-2 850- and 450-$mu$m survey for dust-obscured ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) in the field of the z=1.46 cluster XCS J2215.9-1738. We detect a striking overdensity of sub-millimeter sources coincident with the core of this cluster: $sim 3-4 times$ higher than expected in a blank field. We use the likely radio and mid-infrared counterparts to show that the bulk of these sub-millimeter sources have spectroscopic or photometric redshifts which place them in the cluster and that their multi-wavelength properties are consistent with this association. The average far-infrared luminosities of these galaxies are $(1.0pm0.1) times 10^{12} L_{odot}$, placing them on the U/LIRG boundary. Using the total star formation occurring in the obscured U/LIRG population within the cluster we show that the resulting mass-normalized star-formation rate for this system supports previous claims of a rapid increase in star-formation activity in cluster cores out to $zsim1.5$, which must be associated with the on-going formation of the early-type galaxies which reside in massive clusters today.

The crossover from localized- to itinerant-electron behavior is associated with many intriguing phenomena in condensed-matter physics. In this paper, we investigate the crossover from localized to itinerant regimes in the spinel system Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_ x$V$_2$O$_4$. At low Co doping, orbital order (OO) of the localized electrons on the V3+ ions suppresses magnetic frustration by triggering a tetragonal distortion. With Co doping, electronic itinerancy melts the OO and suppresses the structural phase transition while the reduced spin-lattice coupling produces magnetic frustration. Neutron scattering measurements and first-principles-guided spin models reveal that the non-collinear state at high Co doping is produced by weakened local anisotropy and enhanced Co-V spin interactions.

We present a catalog of 1921 spectroscopic redshifts measured in the fields of the massive galaxy clusters MACSJ0416.1--2403 ($z=0.397$), MACSJ0717.5+3745 ($z=0.546$), and MACSJ1149.5+2223 ($z=0.544$), i.e., three of the four clusters selected by STS cI as the targets of the Frontier Fields (FF) initiative for studies of the distant Universe via gravitational lensing. Compiled in the course of the MACS project (Massive Cluster Survey) that detected the FF clusters, this catalog is provided to the community for three purposes: (1) to allow the identification of cluster members for studies of the galaxy population of these extreme systems, (2) to facilitate the removal of unlensed galaxies and thus reduce shear dilution in weak-lensing analyses, and (3) to improve the calibration of photometric redshifts based on both ground- and spacebased observations of the FF clusters.

Materials with very low thermal conductivity are of high interest for both thermoelectric and optical phase-change applications. Synthetic nanostructuring is most promising to suppress thermal conductivity by scattering phonons, but challenges remain in producing bulk samples. We show that in crystalline AgSbTe$_2$, a spontaneously-forming nanostructure leads to a suppression of thermal conductivity to a glass-like level. Our mapping of the phonon mean-free-paths provides a novel bottom-up microscopic account of thermal conductivity, and also reveals intrinsic anisotropies associated with the nanostructure. Ground-state degeneracy in AgSbTe$_2$ leads to the natural formation of nanoscale domains with different orderings on the cation sublattice, and correlated atomic displacements, which efficiently scatter phonons. This mechanism is general and points to a new avenue in nano-scale engineering of materials, to achieve low thermal conductivities for efficient thermoelectric converters and phase-change memory devices.

We used angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the electronic structure of EuFe$_2$As$_2$, EuFe$_2$As$_{1.4}$P$_{0.6}$ and EuFe$_2$P$_2$. We observed doubled core level peaks associated to the pnictide atoms, which are related to a surface state. Nevertheless, strong electronic dispersion along the $c$ axis, especially pronounced in EuFe$_2$P$_2$, is observed for at less one band, thus indicated that the Fe states, albeit probably affected at the surface, do not form pure two-dimensional surface states. However, this latter material shows reduced spectral weight near the Fermi level as compared to EuFe$_2$As$_2$ and EuFe$_2$As$_{1.4}$P$_{0.6}$. An anomalous jump is also found in the electronic states associated with the Eu$^{2+}$ $f$ states in EuFe$_2$P$_2$.

The structural and magnetic properties of BaMn2Si2O7 have been investigated. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat, measured using single crystals, suggest that the quasi-one-dimensional magnetism originating from the loosely coupled Mn2+ cha in carrying S=5/2 is present at high temperatures, which is similar to the other quasi-one-dimensional barium silicates, BaM2Si2O7 (M: Cu and Co). The Neel temperature (TN=26 K) is high compared to the magnetic interaction along the chain (J = -6 K). The neutron powder diffraction study has revealed that the magnetic structure is long-ranged with antiferromagnetic arrangement along the chain (c) direction and ferromagnetic arrangement along the a and b axes. The detailed structural analysis suggests that the interchain interaction via Mn-O-Mn bond along the a axis is relatively large, which makes the system behave more two-dimensionally in the ac plane and enhances TN.

Understanding the microscopic processes affecting the bulk thermal conductivity is crucial to develop more efficient thermoelectric materials. PbTe is currently one of the leading thermoelectric materials, largely thanks to its low thermal conductivi ty. However, the origin of this low thermal conductivity in a simple rocksalt structure has so far been elusive. Using a combination of inelastic neutron scattering measurements and first-principles computations of the phonons, we identify a strong anharmonic coupling between the ferroelectric transverse optic (TO) mode and the longitudinal acoustic (LA) modes in PbTe. This interaction extends over a large portion of reciprocal space, and directly affects the heat-carrying LA phonons. The LA-TO anharmonic coupling is likely to play a central role in explaining the low thermal conductivity of PbTe. The present results provide a microscopic picture of why many good thermoelectric materials are found near a lattice instability of the ferroelectric type.

We present the photometry of 30 globular clusters (GCs) and GC candidates in 15 intermediate-band filters covering from ~3000 to ~10000 AA using the archival CCD images of M31 observed as part of the Beijing - Arizona - Taiwan - Connecticut (BATC) Mu lticolour Sky Survey. We transform these intermediate-band photometric data to the photometry in the standard UBVRI broad-bands. These M31 GC candidates are selected from the Revised Bologna Catalogue (RBC V.3.5), and most of these candidates do not have any photometric data. Therefore the present photometric data are supplement to RBC V.3.5. We find that 4 out of 61 GCs and GC candidates in RBC V.3.5 do not show any signal on the BATC images at their locations. By linear fit of the distribution in colour-magnitude diagram of blue GCs and GC candidates using the data from RBC V.3.5, and in this study we find the ``blue-tilt of blue M31 GCs with a high confidence at 99.95% or 3.47 sigma for the confirmed GCs, and >99.99% or 4.87 sigma for GCs and GC candidates.

Using metallicities from the literature, combined with the Revised Bologna Catalogue of photometric data for M31 clusters and cluster candidates (the latter of which is the most comprehensive catalogue of M31 clusters currently available, including 3 37 confirmed globular clusters -- GCs -- and 688 GC candidates), we determine 443 reddening values and intrinsic colours, and 209 metallicities for individual clusters without spectroscopic observations. This, the largest sample of M31 GCs presently available, is then used to analyse the metallicity distribution of M31 GCs, which is bimodal with peaks at $rm {[Fe/H]}approx -1.7$ and -0.7 dex. An exploration of metallicities as a function of radius from the M31 centre shows a metallicity gradient for the metal-poor GCs, but no such gradient for the metal-rich GCs. Our results show that the metal-rich clusters appear as a centrally concentrated spatial distribution; however, the metal-poor clusters tend to be less spatially concentrated. There is no correlation between luminosity and metallicity among the M31 sample clusters, which indicates that self-enrichment is indeed unimportant for cluster formation in M31. The reddening distribution shows that slightly more than half of the GCs are affected by a reddening of $E(B-V) la 0.2$ mag; the mean reddening value is $E(B-V) = 0.28_{-0.14}^{+0.23}$ mag. The spatial distribution of the reddening values indicates that the reddening on the northwestern side of the M31 disc is more significant than that on the southeastern side, which is consistent with the conclusion that the northwestern side in nearer to us.
