The structural and magnetic properties of BaMn2Si2O7 have been investigated. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat, measured using single crystals, suggest that the quasi-one-dimensional magnetism originating from the loosely coupled Mn2+ chain carrying S=5/2 is present at high temperatures, which is similar to the other quasi-one-dimensional barium silicates, BaM2Si2O7 (M: Cu and Co). The Neel temperature (TN=26 K) is high compared to the magnetic interaction along the chain (J = -6 K). The neutron powder diffraction study has revealed that the magnetic structure is long-ranged with antiferromagnetic arrangement along the chain (c) direction and ferromagnetic arrangement along the a and b axes. The detailed structural analysis suggests that the interchain interaction via Mn-O-Mn bond along the a axis is relatively large, which makes the system behave more two-dimensionally in the ac plane and enhances TN.

In this work we have investigated the orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transition in the Ba2Cu3O4Cl2 compound. This transition was observed by X-ray powder diffractometry carried out in samples heat treated between 700 and 750OC and also in samples w ith Ba2ZnCu2O4Cl2 composition. Results of X-ray diffractograms simulation confirm the phase transition. dc-Magnetization measurements performed in SQUID showed the existence of diamagnetism signal. The results suggest the existence of localized superconductivity and can explain the different magnetic properties reported in literature for the Ba2Cu3O4Cl2 compound.

Based on the first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we investigate the electronic structures, topological phase transition (TPT) and topological properties of layered magnetic compound MnSb2Te4. It has the similar crystal and magneti c structure as the magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4. We find that when the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is considered, the band structure of MnSb2Te4 in antiferromagnetic (AFM) state has no band inversion at {Gamma}. This is due to the SOC strength of Sb is less than that of Bi. The band inversion can be realized by increasing the SOC of Sb by 0.3 times, which drives MnSb2Te4 from a trivial AFM insulator to an AFM topological insulator (TI) or axion insulator. Uniaxial compressive strain along the layer stacking direction is another way to control the band inversion. The interlayer distance shorten by 5% is needed to drive the similar TPT. For the ferromagnetic (FM) MnSb2Te4 with experimental crystal structure, it is a normal FM insulator. The band inversion can happen when SOC is enhanced by 0.1 times or the interlayer distance is decreased by more than 1%. Thus, FM MnSb2Te4 can be tuned to be the simplest type-I Weyl semimetal with only one pair of Weyl nodes on the three-fold rotational axis. These two Weyl nodes are projected onto (1-10) surface with one Fermi arc connecting them.
Synthesizing half-metallic fully-compensated ferrimagnets that form in the inverse Heusler phase could lead to superior spintronic devices. These materials would have high spin polarization at room temperature with very little fringing magnetic field s. Previous theoretical studies indicated that Cr2CoAl should form in a stable inverse Heusler lattice due to its low activation energy. Here, stoichiometric Cr2CoAl samples were arc-melted and annealed at varying temperatures, followed by studies of their structural and magnetic properties. High-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction revealed a chemically ordered Heusler phase in addition to CoAl and Cr phases. Soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism revealed that the Cr and Co magnetic moments are antiferromagnetically oriented leading to the observed low magnetic moment in Cr2CoAl.
Magnetic topological semimetals, a novel state of quantum matter with nontrivial band topology, have emerged as a new frontier in physics and materials science. An external stimulus like temperature or magnetic field could be expected to alter their spin states and thus the Fermi surface anisotropies and topological features. Here, we perform the angular magnetoresistance measurements and electronic band structure calculations to reveal the evolution of HoSbs Fermi surface anisotropies and topological nature in different magnetic states. The angular magnetoresistance results manifest that its Fermi surface anisotropy is robust in the paramagnetic state but is significantly modulated in the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic states. More interestingly, a transition from the trivial (nontrivial) to nontrivial (trivial) topological electronic phase is observed when HoSb undergoes a magnetic transition from the paramagnetic (antiferromagnetic) to antiferromagnetic (ferromagnetic) state induced by temperature (applied magnetic field). Our studying suggests that HoSb provides an archetype platform to study the correlations between magnetism and topological states of matter.

Topological Weyl semimetals (TWSs) are exotic crystals possessing emergent relativistic Weyl fermions connected by unique surface Fermi-arcs (SFAs) in their electronic structures. To realize the TWS state, certain symmetry (such as the inversion or t ime reversal symmetry) must be broken, leading to a topological phase transition (TPT). Despite the great importance in understanding the formation of TWSs and their unusual properties, direct observation of such a TPT has been challenging. Here, using a recently discovered magnetic TWS Co3Sn2S2, we were able to systematically study its TPT with detailed temperature dependence of the electronic structures by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The TPT with drastic band structures evolution was clearly observed across the Curie temperature (TC = 177 K), including the disappearance of the characteristic SFAs and the recombination of the spin-split bands that leads to the annihilation of Weyl points with opposite chirality. These results not only reveal important insights on the interplay between the magnetism and band topology in TWSs, but also provide a new method to control their exotic physical properties.
