We present a deep learning-based framework for portrait reenactment from a single picture of a target (one-shot) and a video of a driving subject. Existing facial reenactment methods suffer from identity mismatch and produce inconsistent identities when a target and a driving subject are different (cross-subject), especially in one-shot settings. In this work, we aim to address identity preservation in cross-subject portrait reenactment from a single picture. We introduce a novel technique that can disentangle identity from expressions and poses, allowing identity preserving portrait reenactment even when the drivers identity is very different from that of the target. This is achieved by a novel landmark disentanglement network (LD-Net), which predicts personalized facial landmarks that combine the identity of the target with expressions and poses from a different subject. To handle portrait reenactment from unseen subjects, we also introduce a feature dictionary-based generative adversarial network (FD-GAN), which locally translates 2D landmarks into a personalized portrait, enabling one-shot portrait reenactment under large pose and expression variations. We validate the effectiveness of our identity disentangling capabilities via an extensive ablation study, and our method produces consistent identities for cross-subject portrait reenactment. Our comprehensive experiments show that our method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art single-image facial reenactment methods. We will release our code and models for academic use.
Speech-driven facial animation is useful for a variety of applications such as telepresence, chatbots, etc. The necessary attributes of having a realistic face animation are 1) audio-visual synchronization (2) identity preservation of the target individual (3) plausible mouth movements (4) presence of natural eye blinks. The existing methods mostly address the audio-visual lip synchronization, and few recent works have addressed the synthesis of natural eye blinks for overall video realism. In this paper, we propose a method for identity-preserving realistic facial animation from speech. We first generate person-independent facial landmarks from audio using DeepSpeech features for invariance to different voices, accents, etc. To add realism, we impose eye blinks on facial landmarks using unsupervised learning and retargets the person-independent landmarks to person-specific landmarks to preserve the identity-related facial structure which helps in the generation of plausible mouth shapes of the target identity. Finally, we use LSGAN to generate the facial texture from person-specific facial landmarks, using an attention mechanism that helps to preserve identity-related texture. An extensive comparison of our proposed method with the current state-of-the-art methods demonstrates a significant improvement in terms of lip synchronization accuracy, image reconstruction quality, sharpness, and identity-preservation. A user study also reveals improved realism of our animation results over the state-of-the-art methods. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work in speech-driven 2D facial animation that simultaneously addresses all the above-mentioned attributes of a realistic speech-driven face animation.
Face super-resolution (SR) has become an indispensable function in security solutions such as video surveillance and identification system, but the distortion in facial components is a great challenge in it. Most state-of-the-art methods have utilized facial priors with deep neural networks. These methods require extra labels, longer training time, and larger computation memory. In this paper, we propose a novel Edge and Identity Preserving Network for Face SR Network, named as EIPNet, to minimize the distortion by utilizing a lightweight edge block and identity information. We present an edge block to extract perceptual edge information, and concatenate it to the original feature maps in multiple scales. This structure progressively provides edge information in reconstruction to aggregate local and global structural information. Moreover, we define an identity loss function to preserve identification of SR images. The identity loss function compares feature distributions between SR images and their ground truth to recover identities in SR images. In addition, we provide a luminance-chrominance error (LCE) to separately infer brightness and color information in SR images. The LCE method not only reduces the dependency of color information by dividing brightness and color components but also enables our network to reflect differences between SR images and their ground truth in two color spaces of RGB and YUV. The proposed method facilitates the proposed SR network to elaborately restore facial components and generate high quality 8x scaled SR images with a lightweight network structure. Furthermore, our network is able to reconstruct an 128x128 SR image with 215 fps on a GTX 1080Ti GPU. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our network qualitatively and quantitatively outperforms state-of-the-art methods on two challenging datasets: CelebA and VGGFace2.
Video-based person re-identification (Re-ID) is an important computer vision task. The batch-hard triplet loss frequently used in video-based person Re-ID suffers from the Distance Variance among Different Positives (DVDP) problem. In this paper, we address this issue by introducing a new metric learning method called Attribute-aware Identity-hard Triplet Loss (AITL), which reduces the intra-class variation among positive samples via calculating attribute distance. To achieve a complete model of video-based person Re-ID, a multi-task framework with Attribute-driven Spatio-Temporal Attention (ASTA) mechanism is also proposed. Extensive experiments on MARS and DukeMTMC-VID datasets shows that both the AITL and ASTA are very effective. Enhanced by them, even a simple light-weighted video-based person Re-ID baseline can outperform existing state-of-the-art approaches. Pedestrian attribute recognition aims to assign multiple attributes to one pedestrian image captured by a video surveillance camera. Although numerous methods are proposed and make tremendous progress, we argue that it is time to step back and analyze the status quo of the area. We review and rethink the recent progress from three perspectives. First, given that there is no explicit and complete definition of pedestrian attribute recognition, we formally define and distinguish pedestrian attribute recognition from other similar tasks. Second, based on the proposed definition, we expose the limitations of the existing datasets, which violate the academic norm and are inconsistent with the essential requirement of practical industry application. Thus, we propose two datasets, PETAtextsubscript{$ZS$} and RAPtextsubscript{$ZS$}, constructed following the zero-shot settings on pedestrian identity. In addition, we also introduce several realistic criteria for future pedestrian attribute dataset construction. Finally, we reimplement existing state-of-the-art methods and introduce a strong baseline method to give reliable evaluations and fair comparisons. Experiments are conducted on four existing datasets and two proposed datasets to measure progress on pedestrian attribute recognition.
