Unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) have great value with their ability to execute hazardous and time-consuming missions over water surfaces. Recently, USVs for inland waterways have attracted increasing attention for their potential application in autonomous monitoring, transportation, and cleaning. However, unlike sailing in open water, the challenges posed by scenes of inland waterways, such as the complex distribution of obstacles, the global positioning system (GPS) signal denial environment, the reflection of bank-side structures, and the fog over the water surface, all impede USV application in inland waterways. To address these problems and stimulate relevant research, we introduce USVInland, a multisensor dataset for USVs in inland waterways. The collection of USVInland spans a trajectory of more than 26 km in diverse real-world scenes of inland waterways using various modalities, including lidar, stereo cameras, millimeter-wave radar, GPS, and inertial measurement units (IMUs). Based on the requirements and challenges in the perception and navigation of USVs for inland waterways, we build benchmarks for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), stereo matching, and water segmentation. We evaluate common algorithms for the above tasks to determine the influence of unique inland waterway scenes on algorithm performance. We propose a novel receding horizon planner for an autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) performing path planning in urban waterways. Feasible paths are found by repeatedly generating and searching a graph reflecting the obstacles observed in the sensor field-of-view. We also propose a novel method for multi-objective motion planning over the graph by leveraging the paradigm of lexicographic optimization and applying it to graph search within our receding horizon planner. The competing resources of interest are penalized hierarchically during the search. Higher-ranked resources cause a robot to incur non-negative costs over the paths traveled, which are occasionally zero-valued. The framework is intended to capture problems in which a robot must manage resources such as risk of collision. This leaves freedom for tie-breaking with respect to lower-priority resources; at the bottom of the hierarchy is a strictly positive quantity consumed by the robot, such as distance traveled, energy expended or time elapsed. We conduct experiments in both simulated and real-world environments to validate the proposed planner and demonstrate its capability for enabling ASV navigation in complex environments.
Service robots should be able to operate autonomously in dynamic and daily changing environments over an extended period of time. While Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) is one of the most fundamental problems for robotic autonomy, most existing SLAM works are evaluated with data sequences that are recorded in a short period of time. In real-world deployment, there can be out-of-sight scene changes caused by both natural factors and human activities. For example, in home scenarios, most objects may be movable, replaceable or deformable, and the visual features of the same place may be significantly different in some successive days. Such out-of-sight dynamics pose great challenges to the robustness of pose estimation, and hence a robots long-term deployment and operation. To differentiate the forementioned problem from the conventional works which are usually evaluated in a static setting in a single run, the term textit{lifelong SLAM} is used here to address SLAM problems in an ever-changing environment over a long period of time. To accelerate lifelong SLAM research, we release the OpenLORIS-Scene datasets. The data are collected in real-world indoor scenes, for multiple times in each place to include scene changes in real life. We also design benchmarking metrics for lifelong SLAM, with which the robustness and accuracy of pose estimation are evaluated separately. Most of the routing algorithms for unmanned vehicles, that arise in data gathering and monitoring applications in the literature, rely on the Global Positioning System (GPS) information for localization. However, disruption of GPS signals either intentionally or unintentionally could potentially render these algorithms not applicable. In this article, we present a novel method to address this difficulty by combining methods from cooperative localization and routing. In particular, the article formulates a fundamental combinatorial optimization problem to plan routes for an unmanned vehicle in a GPS-restricted environment while enabling localization for the vehicle. We also develop algorithms to compute optimal paths for the vehicle using the proposed formulation. Extensive simulation results are also presented to corroborate the effectiveness and performance of the proposed formulation and algorithms.
The capabilities of autonomous flight with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have significantly increased in recent times. However, basic problems such as fast and robust geo-localization in GPS-denied environments still remain unsolved. Existing research has primarily concentrated on improving the accuracy of localization at the cost of long and varying computation time in various situations, which often necessitates the use of powerful ground station machines. In order to make image-based geo-localization online and pragmatic for lightweight embedded systems on UAVs, we propose a framework that is reliable in changing scenes, flexible about computing resource allocation and adaptable to common camera placements. The framework is comprised of two stages: offline database preparation and online inference. At the first stage, color images and depth maps are rendered as seen from potential vehicle poses quantized over the satellite and topography maps of anticipated flying areas. A database is then populated with the global and local descriptors of the rendered images. At the second stage, for each captured real-world query image, top global matches are retrieved from the database and the vehicle pose is further refined via local descriptor matching. We present field experiments of image-based localization on two different UAV platforms to validate our results.
The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is growing rapidly across many civil application domains including real-time monitoring, providing wireless coverage, remote sensing, search and rescue, delivery of goods, security and surveillance, precision agriculture, and civil infrastructure inspection. Smart UAVs are the next big revolution in UAV technology promising to provide new opportunities in different applications, especially in civil infrastructure in terms of reduced risks and lower cost. Civil infrastructure is expected to dominate the more that $45 Billion market value of UAV usage. In this survey, we present UAV civil applications and their challenges. We also discuss current research trends and provide future insights for potential UAV uses. Furthermore, we present the key challenges for UAV civil applications, including: charging challenges, collision avoidance and swarming challenges, and networking and security related challenges. Based on our review of the recent literature, we discuss open research challenges and draw high-level insights on how these challenges might be approached.
