Decades of social science research identified ten fundamental dimensions that provide the conceptual building blocks to describe the nature of human relationships. Yet, it is not clear to what extent these concepts are expressed in everyday language and what role they have in shaping observable dynamics of social interactions. After annotating conversational text through crowdsourcing, we trained NLP tools to detect the presence of these types of interaction from conversations, and applied them to 160M messages written by geo-referenced Reddit users, 290k emails from the Enron corpus and 300k lines of dialogue from movie scripts. We show that social dimensions can be predicted purely from conversations with an AUC up to 0.98, and that the combination of the predicted dimensions suggests both the types of relationships people entertain (conflict vs. support) and the types of real-world communities (wealthy vs. deprived) they shape.
With the recent advances of the Internet of Things, and the increasing accessibility of ubiquitous computing resources and mobile devices, the prevalence of rich media contents, and the ensuing social, economic, and cultural changes, computing technology and applications have evolved quickly over the past decade. They now go beyond personal computing, facilitating collaboration and social interactions in general, causing a quick proliferation of social relationships among IoT entities. The increasing number of these relationships and their heterogeneous social features have led to computing and communication bottlenecks that prevent the IoT network from taking advantage of these relationships to improve the offered services and customize the delivered content, known as relationship explosion. On the other hand, the quick advances in artificial intelligence applications in social computing have led to the emerging of a promising research field known as Artificial Social Intelligence (ASI) that has the potential to tackle the social relationship explosion problem. This paper discusses the role of IoT in social relationships detection and management, the problem of social relationships explosion in IoT and reviews the proposed solutions using ASI, including social-oriented machine-learning and deep-learning techniques.
This article provides an overview of intimate threats: a class of privacy threats that can arise within our families, romantic partnerships, close friendships, and caregiving relationships. Many common assumptions about privacy are upended in the context of these relationships, and many otherwise effective protective measures fail when applied to intimate threats. Those closest to us know the answers to our secret questions, have access to our devices, and can exercise coercive power over us. We survey a range of intimate relationships and describe their common features. Based on these features, we explore implications for both technical privacy design and policy, and offer design recommendations for ameliorating intimate privacy risks.
Type-IIB supergravity in ten dimensions admits two consistent $Z_2$ truncations. After the insertion of D9-branes, one of them leads to the low-energy action of type-I string theory, and it can be performed in two different ways, in correspondence with the fact that there are two different consistent ten-dimensional type-I string theories, namely the SO(32) superstring and the $USp(32)$ model, in which supersymmetry is broken on the D9-branes. We derive here the same results for Type-IIA theory compactified on a circle in the presence of D8-branes. We also analyze the $kappa$-symmetric action for a brane charged with respect to the S-dual of the RR 10-form of type-IIB, and we find that the tension of such an object has to scale like $g_S^{-2}$ in the string frame. We give an argument to explain why this result is in disagreement with the one obtained using Weyl rescaling of the brane action, and we argue that this brane can only be consistently introduced if the other $Z_2$ truncation of type-IIB is performed. Moreover, we find that one can include a 10-form in type-IIA supersymmetry algebra, and also in this case the corresponding $kappa$-symmetric brane has a tension scaling like $g_S^{-2}$ in the string frame.
We analyze the de Sitter construction of cite{KKLT} using ten-dimensional supergravity, finding exact agreement with the four-dimensional effective theory. Starting from the fermionic couplings in the D7-brane action, we derive the ten-dimensional stress-energy due to gaugino condensation on D7-branes. We demonstrate that upon including this stress-energy, as well as that due to anti-D3-branes, the ten-dimensional equations of motion require the four-dimensional curvature to take precisely the value determined by the four-dimensional effective theory of cite{KKLT}.
In this paper, we study certain geometric and topological properties of online social networks using the concept of density and geometric vector spaces. Moi Krug (My Circle), a Russian social network that promotes the principle of the six degrees of separation and is positioning itself as a vehicle for professionals and recruiters seeking each others services, is used as a test vehicle.
