We are carrying out a sensitive blind survey for neutral hydrogen (HI) in the Virgo cluster and report here on the first 5deg x 1deg area covered, which includes two optically-dark gas features: the five-cloud ALFALFA Virgo 7 complex (Kent et al. 2007, 2009) and the stripped tail of NGC 4522 (Kenney et al. 2004). We discover a sixth cloud and low velocity gas that extends the velocity range of the complex to over 450 km/s, find that around half of the total HI flux comes from extended emission rather than compact clouds, and see around 150 percent more gas, raising the total HI mass from 5.1 x 10$^8$ M$_odot$ to 1.3 x 10$^9$ M$_odot$. This makes the identification of NGC 4445 and NGC 4424 by Kent et al. (2009) as possible progenitors of the complex less likely, as it would require an unusually high fraction of the gas removed to have been preserved in the complex. We also identify a new component to the gas tail of NGC 4522 extending to ~200 km/s below the velocity range of the gas in the galaxy, pointing towards the eastern end of the complex. We consider the possibility that NGC 4522 may be the parent galaxy of the complex, but the large velocity separation (~1800 km/s) leads us to rule this out. We conclude that, in the absence of any better candidate, NGC 4445 remains the most likely parent galaxy, although this requires it to have been particularly gas-rich prior to the event that removed its gas into the complex.

We present the catalog of ~31500 extragalactic HI line sources detected by the completed ALFALFA survey out to z < 0.06 including both high signal-to-noise ratio (> 6.5) detections and ones of lower quality which coincide in both position and recessional velocity with galaxies of known redshift. We review the observing technique, data reduction pipeline, and catalog construction process, focusing on details of particular relevance to understanding the catalogs compiled parameters. We further describe and make available the digital HI line spectra associated with the catalogued sources. In addition to the extragalactic HI line detections, we report nine confirmed OH megamasers and ten OH megamaser candidates at 0.16 < z < 0.22 whose OH line signals are redshifted into the ALFALFA frequency band. Because of complexities in data collection and processing associated with the use of a feed-horn array on a complex single-dish antenna in the terrestrial radio frequency interference environment, we also present a list of suggestions and caveats for consideration by users of the ALFALFA extragalactic catalog for future scientific investigations.

IRAM 30m 12CO(1-0) and 12CO(2-1) HERA observations are presented for the ram-pressure stripped Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4522. The CO emission is detected in the galactic disk and the extraplanar gas. The extraplanar CO emission follows the morphology of the atomic gas closely but is less extended. The CO maxima do not appear to correspond to regions where there is peak massive star formation as probed by Halpha emission. The presence of molecular gas is a necessary but not sufficient condition for star formation. Compared to the disk gas, the molecular fraction of the extraplanar gas is 30% lower and the star formation efficiency of the extraplanar gas is about 3 times lower. The comparison with an existing dynamical model extended by a recipe for distinguishing between atomic and molecular gas shows that a significant part of the gas is stripped in the form of overdense arm-like structures. It is argued that the molecular fraction depends on the square root of the total large-scale density. Based on the combination of the CO/Halpha and an analytical model, the total gas density is estimated to be about 4 times lower than that of the galactic disk. Molecules and stars form within this dense gas according to the same laws as in the galactic disk, i.e. they mainly depend on the total large-scale gas density. Star formation proceeds where the local large-scale gas density is highest. Given the complex 3D morphology this does not correspond to the peaks in the surface density. In the absence of a confining gravitational potential, the stripped gas arms will most probably disperse; i.e. the density of the gas will decrease and star formation will cease.

We present spectroscopic observations for six emission-line objects projected onto the Virgo cluster. These sources have been selected from narrow band (Halpha+[NII]) images showing faint detectable continuum emission and EW>100 Angstrom. Five of these sources result [OIII]lambda 5007 emitters at z ~ 0.31, while one 122603+130724 is confirmed to be an HII region belonging to the Virgo cluster. This point-like source has a recessional velocity of ~ 200 km/s, and is associated with the giant galaxy VCC873 (NGC 4402). It has a higher luminosity, star formation rate and metallicity than the extragalactic HII region recently discovered near the Virgo galaxy VCC836 by Gerhard et al. (2002).

The Galaxy Ultraviolet Explorer (GALEX) satellite has recently shown the presence of an extended, outer ring studded with UV-bright knots surrounding the lenticular galaxy NGC 4262. Such a structure---not detected in the optical---is coupled with a ring of atomic (HI) gas. We want to show that both star-forming and HI rings surrounding this SB0 galaxy share the same radial distance from the galaxy center and spatial orientation. We want also to model the kinematics of the ring(s) and of the galaxy body. We make use of archive FUV and NUV GALEX data plus HI observations from the literature. We confirm that the UV-bright and atomic gas rings of NGC 4262 have the same extent and projected spatial orientation. Their kinematics is not coupled with that of the galaxy stars. It is possible that NGC 4262 has undergone a major gas stripping event in the past which gave origin to the present necklace of UV-bright knots.

We cross-correlate the Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources (PCCS) with the fully sampled 84 deg2 Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeViCS) fields. We search for and identify the 857 and 545 GHz PCCS sources in the HeViCS fields by studying their FIR/submm and optical counterparts. We find 84 and 48 compact Planck sources in the HeViCS fields at 857 and 545 GHz, respectively. Almost all sources correspond to individual bright Virgo Cluster galaxies. The vast majority of the Planck detected galaxies are late-type spirals, with the Sc class dominating the numbers, while early-type galaxies are virtually absent from the sample, especially at 545 GHz. We compare the HeViCS SPIRE flux densities for the detected galaxies with the four different PCCS flux density estimators and find an excellent correlation with the aperture photometry flux densities, even at the highest flux density levels. We find only seven PCCS sources in the HeViCS fields without a nearby galaxy as obvious counterpart, and conclude that all of these are dominated by Galactic cirrus features or are spurious detections. No Planck sources in the HeViCS fields seem to be associated to high-redshift proto-clusters of dusty galaxies or strongly lensed submm sources. Finally, our study is the first empirical confirmation of the simulation-based estimated completeness of the PCCS, and provides a strong support of the internal PCCS validation procedure.
