We propose a simple mean-field ansatz to study phase transitions from a topological phase to a trivial phase. We probe the efficiency of this approach by considering the string-net model in the presence of a string tension for any anyon theory. Such a perturbation is known to be responsible for a deconfinement-confinement phase transition which is well described by the present variational setup. We argue that mean-field results become exact in the limit of large total quantum dimension.

We consider the string-net model on the honeycomb lattice for Ising anyons in the presence of a string tension. This competing term induces a nontrivial dynamics of the non-Abelian anyonic quasiparticles and may lead to a breakdown of the topological phase. Using high-order series expansions and exact diagonalizations, we determine the robustness of this doubled Ising phase which is found to be separated from two gapped phases. An effective quantum dimer model emerges in the large tension limit giving rise to two different translation symmetry-broken phases. Consequently, we obtain four transition points, two of which are associated with first-order transitions whereas the two others are found to be continuous and provide examples of recently proposed Bose condensation for anyons.

Heavy quark transport coefficients in a strongly coupled Quark-Gluon Plasma can be evaluated using a gauge/string duality and lattice QCD. Via this duality, one can argue that for low momenta the drag coefficient for heavy quarks is proportional to the spatial string tension. Such a tension is well studied on the lattice that allows one to straightforwardly make non-perturbative estimates of the heavy quark diffusion coefficients near the critical point. The obtained results are consistent with those in the literature.
We discuss the emergence of bound states in the low-energy spectrum of the string-net Hamiltonian in the presence of a string tension. In the ladder geometry, we show that a single bound state arises either for a finite tension or in the zero-tension limit depending on the theory considered. In the latter case, we perturbatively compute the binding energy as a function of the total quantum dimension. We also address this issue in the honeycomb lattice where the number of bound states in the topological phase depends on the total quantum dimension. Finally, the internal structure of these bound states is analyzed in the zero-tension limit.
Floquet symmetry protected topological (FSPT) phases are non-equilibrium topological phases enabled by time-periodic driving. FSPT phases of 1d chains of bosons, spins, or qubits host dynamically protected edge states that can store quantum information without decoherence, making them promising for use as quantum memories. While FSPT order cannot be detected by any local measurement, here we construct non-local string order parameters that directly measure general 1d FSPT order. We propose a superconducting-qubit array based realization of the simplest Ising-FSPT, which can be implemented with existing quantum computing hardware. We devise an interferometric scheme to directly measure the non-local string order using only simple one- and two- qubit operations and single-qubit measurements.
Topology in quantum matter is typically associated with gapped phases. For example, in symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases, the bulk energy gap localizes edge modes near the boundary. In this work we identify a new mechanism that leads to topological phases which are not only gapless but where the absence of a gap is essential. These `intrinsically gapless SPT phases have no gapped counterpart and are hence also distinct from recently discovered examples of gapless SPT phases. The essential ingredient of these phases is that on-site symmetries act in an anomalous fashion at low energies. Intrinsically gapless SPT phases are found to display several unique properties including (i) protected edge modes that are impossible to realize in a gapped system with the same symmetries, (ii) string order parameters that are likewise forbidden in gapped phases, and (iii) constraints on the phase diagram obtained upon perturbing the phase. We verify predictions of the general theory in a specific realization protected by $mathbb Z_4$ symmetry, the one dimensional Ising-Hubbard chain, using both numerical simulations and effective field theory. We also discuss extensions to higher dimensions and possible experimental realizations.
