We study the behavior of the dynamical fermion mass when infrared divergences and mass shell singularities are present in a gauge theory. In particular, in the massive Schwinger model in covariant gauges we find that the pole of the fermion propagator is divergent and gauge dependent at one loop, but the leading singularities cancel in the quenched rainbow approximation. On the other hand, in physical gauges, we find that the dynamical fermion mass is finite and gauge independent at least up to one loop.

Extensive investigations show that QED$_{3}$ exhibits dynamical fermion mass generation at zero temperature when the fermion flavor $N$ is sufficiently small. However, it seems difficult to extend the theoretical analysis to finite temperature. We study this problem by means of Dyson-Schwinger equation approach after considering the effect of finite temperature or disorder-induced fermion damping. Under the widely used instantaneous approximation, the dynamical mass displays an infrared divergence in both cases. We then adopt a new approximation that includes an energy-dependent gauge boson propagator and obtain results for dynamical fermion mass that do not contain infrared divergence. The validity of the new approximation is examined by comparing to the well-established results obtained at zero temperature.
The perturbative effective potential suffers infrared (IR) divergences in gauges with massless Goldstones in their minima (like Landau or Fermi gauges) but the problem can be fixed by a suitable resummation of the Goldstone propagators. When the potential minimum is generated radiatively, gauge-independence of the potential at the minimum also requires resummation and we demonstrate that the resummation that solves the IR problem also cures the gauge-dependence issue, showing this explicitly in the Abelian Higgs model in Fermi gauge. In the process we find an IR divergence (in the location of the minimum) specific to Fermi gauge and not appreciated in recent literature. We show that physical observables can still be computed in this gauge and we further show how to get rid of this divergence by a field redefinition. All these results generalize to the Standard Model case.
We present a calculation of the up, down, strange and charm quark masses performed within the lattice QCD framework. We use the twisted mass fermion action and carry out simulations that include in the sea two light mass-degenerate quarks, as well as the strange and charm quarks. In the analysis we use gauge ensembles simulated at three values of the lattice spacing and with light quarks that correspond to pion masses in the range from 350 MeV to the physical value, while the strange and charm quark masses are tuned approximately to their physical values. We use several quantities to set the scale in order to check for finite lattice spacing effects and in the continuum limit we get compatible results. The quark mass renormalization is carried out non-perturbatively using the RI-MOM method converted into the $overline{rm MS}$ scheme. For the determination of the quark masses we use physical observables from both the meson and the baryon sectors, obtaining $m_{ud} = 3.636(66)(^{+60}_{-57})$~MeV and $m_s = 98.7(2.4)(^{+4.0}_{-3.2})$~MeV in the $overline{rm MS}(2,{rm GeV})$ scheme and $m_c = 1036(17)(^{+15}_{-8})$~MeV in the $overline{rm MS}(3,{rm GeV})$ scheme, where the first errors are statistical and the second ones are combinations of systematic errors. For the quark mass ratios we get $m_s / m_{ud} = 27.17(32)(^{+56}_{-38})$ and $m_c / m_s = 11.48(12)(^{+25}_{-19})$.

We study dynamical symmetry breaking in three-dimensional QED with a Chern-Simons (CS) term, considering the screening effect of $N$ flavor fermions. We find a new phase of the vacuum, in which both the fermion mass and a magnetic field are dynamically generated, when the coefficient of the CS term $kappa$ equals $N e^2/4 pi$. The resultant vacuum becomes the finite-density state half-filled by fermions. For $kappa=N e^2/2 pi$, we find the fermion remains massless and only the magnetic field is induced. For $kappa=0$, spontaneous magnetization does not occur and should be regarded as an external field.

We investigate a vacuum decay around an over-spinning naked singularity by using the Israel junction condition. We found that if the Higgs field develops the second minimum at higher energy scale, a spinning small-mass naked singularity could cause the vacuum decay around it within the cosmic age. An event horizon may form around the singularity due to the angular momentum transport from the singularity to a vacuum bubble wall. The newly formed event horizon leads to the increase of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, which contributes to the enhancement of the vacuum decay rate. We conclude that small-mass naked singularities may be hidden by the event horizon within the cosmological time.
