Angular-dependent channeling Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (c-RBS) has been used to quantify the fraction of Cr atoms on substitutional, interstitial, and random sites in epitaxial Ga1-xCrxN films grown by reactive molecular-beam epitaxy. The morphology of these films and correlation with their magnetic properties has been investigated. Films grown at temperatures below ~ 750oC have up to 90% of Cr occupying substitutional sites. Post-growth annealing at 825oC results in a systematic drop in the fraction of substitutional Cr as well as a fall off in the ferromagnetic signal. The roles of non-substitutional Cr in transferring charge from the Cr t2 band and segregation of substitutional Cr in the loss of magnetism are discussed. Overall, these results provide strong microscopic evidence that Cr-doped III-N systems are dilute magnetic semiconductors.

We demonstrate the exchange coupling of a ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga1-xMnxAs) with an overgrown antiferromagnet (MnO). Unlike most conventional exchange biased systems, the blocking temperature of the antiferromagnet (T_B = 48 +- 2 K) and the Curie temperature of the ferromagnet (T_C = 55.1 +- 0.2 K) are comparable. The resulting exchange bias manifests itself as a clear shift in the magnetization hysteresis loop when the bilayer is cooled in the presence of an applied magnetic field and an enhancement of the coercive field.
Cubic spinel CoCr2O4 has attained recent attention due to its multiferroic properties. However, the Co site substitution effect on the structural and magnetic properties has rarely been studied in thin film form. In this work, the structural and magnetic properties of Co1-xNixCr2O4 (x = 0, 0.5) epitaxial thin films deposited on MgAl2O4 (100) and MgO (100) substrates to manipulate the nature of strain in the films using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique are presented. The epitaxial nature of the films was confirmed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) measurements. Raman measurements revealed a disappearance of characteristic A1g and F2g modes of the CoCr2O4 with increase in the Ni content. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies show a modification of the surface morphology upon Ni substitution. Magnetic measurements disclose that the ferrimagnetic Curie temperature (Tc) of the CoCr2O4 in thin film grown on MgAl2O4 (100) and MgO (100) substrates were found to be 100.6 +/- 0.5 K and 93.8 +/- 0.2 K, respectively. With Ni substitution the transition temperatures significantly get enhanced from that of CoCr2O4. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggests Cr3+ oxidation states in the films, while Co ions are present in a mixed Co2+/Co3+ oxidation state. The substitution of Ni at Co site significantly modifies the line shape of the core level as well as the valence band. Ni ions are also found to be in a mixed 2+/3+ oxidation state. O 1s core level display asymmetry related to possible defects like oxygen vacancies in the films.
Systematic investigations of the structural and magnetic properties of single crystal (Ga,Mn)N films grown by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy are presented. High resolution transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and extended x-ray absorption fine structure studies do not reveal any crystallographic phase separation and indicate that Mn occupies Ga-substitutional sites in the Mn concentration range up to 1%. The magnetic properties as a function of temperature, magnetic field and its orientation with respect to the c-axis of the wurtzite structure can be quantitatively described by the paramagnetic theory of an ensemble of non-interacting Mn$^{3+}$ ions in the relevant crystal field, a conclusion consistent with the x-ray absorption near edge structure analysis. A negligible contribution of Mn in the 2+ charge state points to a low concentration of residual donors in the studied films. Studies on modulation doped p-type (Ga,Mn)N/(Ga,Al)N:Mg heterostructures do not reproduce the high temperature robust ferromagnetism reported recently for this system.
We demonstrate the control of the hole concentration in Ga1-xMnxP over a wide range by introducing compensating vacancies. The resulting evolution of the Curie temperature from 51 K to 7.5 K is remarkably similar to that observed in Ga1-xMnxAs despite the dramatically different character of hole transport between the two material systems. The highly localized nature of holes in Ga1-xMnxP is reflected in the accompanying increase in resistivity by many orders of magnitude. Based on variable-temperature resistivity data we present a general picture for hole conduction in which variable-range hopping is the dominant transport mechanism in the presence of compensation.
Understanding the nature and hierarchy of on surface reactions is a major chal- lenge for designing coordination and covalent nanostructures by means of multistep synthetic routes. In particular, intermediates and final products are hard to predict since reaction paths and their activation windows depend on the choice of both the molecular precursor design and the substrate. Here we report a systematic study of the effect of the catalytic metal surface to reveal how a single precursor can give rise to very distinct polymers that range from coordination and covalent non planar polymer chains of distinct chirality, to atomically precise graphene nanoribbons and nanoporous graphene. Our precursor consists on adding two phenyl substituents to 10,10-dibromo 9,9-bianthracene, a well-studied precursor in the on-surface synthesis of graphene nanoribbons. The critical role of the monomer design on the reaction paths is inferred from the fact that the phenyl substitution leads to very distinct products in each one of the studied metallic substrates.
