This paper investigates the application of physical-layer network coding (PNC) to Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) where a controller and a robot are out of each others transmission range, and they exchange messages with the assistance of a relay. We particularly focus on a scenario where the controller has more transmitted information, and the channel of the controller is stronger than that of the robot. To reduce the communication latency, we propose an asymmetric transmission scheme where the controller and robot transmit different amount of information in the uplink of PNC simultaneously. To achieve this, the controller chooses a higher order modulation. In addition, the both users apply channel codes to guarantee the reliability. A problem is a superimposed symbol at the relay contains different amount of source information from the two end users. It is thus hard for the relay to deduce meaningful network-coded messages by applying the current PNC decoding techniques which require the end users to transmit the same amount of information. To solve this problem, we propose a lattice-based scheme where the two users encode-and-modulate their information in lattices with different lattice construction levels. Our design is versatile on that the two end users can freely choose their modulation orders based on their channel power, and the design is applicable for arbitrary channel codes.

This paper investigates the information freshness of two-way relay networks (TWRN) operated with physical-layer network coding (PNC). Information freshness is quantified by age of information (AoI), defined as the time elapsed since the generation time of the latest received information update. PNC reduces communication latency of TWRNs by turning superimposed electromagnetic waves into network-coded messages so that end users can send update packets to each other via the relay more frequently. Although sending update packets more frequently is potential to reduce AoI, how to deal with packet corruption has not been well investigated. Specifically, if old packets are corrupted in any hop of a TWRN, one needs to decide the old packets to be dropped or to be retransmitted, e.g., new packets have recent information, but may require more time to be delivered. We study the average AoI with and without ARQ in PNC-enabled TWRNs. We first consider a non-ARQ scheme where old packets are always dropped when corrupted, referred to once-lost-then-drop (OLTD), and a classical ARQ scheme with no packet lost, referred to as reliable packet transmission (RPT). Interestingly, our analysis shows that neither the non-ARQ scheme nor the pure ARQ scheme achieves good average AoI. We then put forth an uplink-lost-then-drop (ULTD) protocol that combines packet drop and ARQ. Experiments on software-defined radio indicate that ULTD significantly outperforms OLTD and RPT in terms of average AoI. Although this paper focuses on TWRNs, we believe the insight of ULTD applies generally to other two-hop networks. Our insight is that to achieve high information freshness, when packets are corrupted in the first hop, new packets should be generated and sent (i.e., old packets are discarded); when packets are corrupted in the second hop, old packets should be retransmitted until successful reception.
This paper investigates noncoherent detection in a two-way relay channel operated with physical layer network coding (PNC), assuming FSK modulation and short-packet transmissions. For noncoherent detection, the detector has access to the magnitude but not the phase of the received signal. For conventional communication in which a receiver receives the signal from a transmitter only, the phase does not affect the magnitude, hence the performance of the noncoherent detector is independent of the phase. PNC, however, is a multiuser system in which a receiver receives signals from multiple transmitters simultaneously. The relative phase of the signals from different transmitters affects the received signal magnitude through constructive-destructive interference. In particular, for good performance, the noncoherent detector in PNC must take into account the influence of the relative phase on the signal magnitude. Building on this observation, this paper delves into the fundamentals of PNC noncoherent detector design. To avoid excessive overhead, we do away from preambles. We show how the relative phase can be deduced directly from the magnitudes of the received data symbols. Numerical results show that our detector performs nearly as well as a fictitious optimal detector that has perfect knowledge of the channel gains and relative phase.
As a recently proposed idea for future wireless systems, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) can assist communications between entities which do not have high-quality direct channels in between. Specifically, an IRS comprises many low-cost passive elements, each of which reflects the incident signal by incurring a phase change so that the reflected signals add coherently at the receiver. In this paper, for an IRS-aided wireless network, we study the problem of power control at the base station (BS) for physical-layer broadcasting under quality of service (QoS) constraints at mobile users, by jointly designing the transmit beamforming at the BS and the phase shifts of the IRS units. Furthermore, we derive a lower bound of the minimum transmit power at the BS to present the performance bound for optimization methods. Simulation results show that, the transmit power at the BS approaches the lower bound with the increase of the number of IRS units, and is much lower than that of the communication system without IRS.
Physical-layer Network Coding (PNC) can significantly improve the throughput of wireless two way relay channel (TWRC) by allowing the two end nodes to transmit messages to the relay simultaneously. To achieve reliable communication, channel coding could be applied on top of PNC. This paper investigates link-by-link channel-coded PNC, in which a critical process at the relay is to transform the superimposed channel-coded packets received from the two end nodes plus noise, Y3=X1+X2+W3, to the network-coded combination of the source packets, S1 XOR S2 . This is in distinct to the traditional multiple-access problem, in which the goal is to obtain S1 and S2 separately. The transformation from Y3 to (S1 XOR S2) is referred to as the Channel-decoding-Network-Coding process (CNC) in that it involves both channel decoding and network coding operations. A contribution of this paper is the insight that in designing CNC, we should first (i) channel-decode Y3 to the superimposed source symbols S1+S2 before (ii) transforming S1+S2 to the network-coded packets (S1 XOR S2) . Compared with previously proposed strategies for CNC, this strategy reduces the channel-coding network-coding mismatch. It is not obvious, however, that an efficient decoder for step (i) exists. A second contribution of this paper is to provide an explicit construction of such a decoder based on the use of the Repeat Accumulate (RA) code. Specifically, we redesign the belief propagation algorithm of the RA code for traditional point-to-point channel to suit the need of the PNC multiple-access channel. Simulation results show that our new scheme outperforms the previously proposed schemes significantly in terms of BER without added complexity.
Leveraging recent progress in physical-layer network coding we propose a new approach to random access: When packets collide, it is possible to recover a linear combination of the packets at the receiver. Over many rounds of transmission, the receiver can thus obtain many linear combinations and eventually recover all original packets. This is by contrast to slotted ALOHA where packet collisions lead to complete erasures. The throughput of the proposed strategy is derived and shown to be significantly superior to the best known strategies, including multipacket reception.
