Inelastic-neutron-scattering measurements were performed on a single crystal of the heavy-fermion paramagnet UTe$_2$ above its superconducting temperature. We confirm the presence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations with the incommensurate wavevector $mathbf{k}_1=(0,0.57,0)$. A quasielastic signal is found, whose momentum-transfer dependence is compatible with fluctuations of magnetic moments $muparallelmathbf{a}$, with a sine-wave modulation of wavevector $mathbf{k}_1$ and in-phase moments on the nearest U atoms. Low dimensionality of the magnetic fluctuations, consequence of the ladder structure, is indicated by weak correlations along the direction $mathbf{c}$. These fluctuations saturate below the temperature $T_1^*simeq15$~K, in possible relation with anomalies observed in thermodynamic, electrical-transport and nuclear-magnetic-resonance measurements. The absence or weakness of ferromagnetic fluctuations, in our data collected at temperatures down to 2.1 K and energy transfers from 0.6 to 7.5 meV, is emphasized. These results constitute constraints for models of magnetically-mediated superconductivity in UTe$_2$.

In quasi-two dimensional Ce(Ir,Rh)In$_5$ system, it has been suggested that the phase diagram contains two distinct domes with different heavy fermion superconducting states. We here report the systematic pressure dependence of the electron transport properties in the normal state of CeRh$_{0.2}$Ir$_{0.8}$In$_{5}$ and CeIrIn$_{5}$, which locates in first and second superconducting dome, respectively. We observed non-Fermi liquid behavior at low temperatures in both compounds, including non-quadratic $T-$dependence of the resistivity, large enhancement of the Hall coefficient, and the violation of the Kohlers rule in the magnetoresistance. We show that the cotangent of Hall angle $cot Theta_H$ varies as $T^2$, and the magnetoresistance is quite well scaled by the Hall angle as $Delta rho_{xx}/rho_{xx}propto tan^2Theta_H$. The observed transport anomalies are common features of Ce$M$In$_{5}$ ($M$=Co, Rh, and Ir) and high-$T_c$ cuprates, suggesting that the anomalous transport properties observed in CeIrIn$_{5}$ are mainly governed by the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, not by the Ce-valence fluctuations which has been proposed to be the possible origin for the second superconducting dome.
Spin-triplet superconductors are of extensive current interest because they can host topological state and Majorana ferimons important for quantum computation. The uranium based heavyfermion superconductor UTe$_2$ has been argued as a spin-triplet superconductor similar to UGe$_2$, URhGe, and UCoGe, where the superconducting phase is near (or coexists with) a ferromagnetic (FM) instability and spin-triplet electron pairing is driven by FM spin fluctuations. Here we use neutron scattering to show that although UTe$_2$ exhibits no static magnetic order down to 0.3 K, its magnetism is dominated by incommensurate spin fluctuations near antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering wave vector and extends to at least 2.6 meV. We are able to understand the dominant incommensurate spin fluctuations of UTe$_2$ in terms of its electronic structure calculated using a combined density functional and dynamic mean field theory.
Correlated band theory implemented as a combination of density functional theory with exact diagonalization [DFT+U(ED)] of the Anderson impurity term with Coulomb repulsion $U$ in the open 14-orbital $5f$ shell is applied to UTe$_2$. The small gap for $U$=0, evidence of the half-filled $j=frac{5}{2}$ subshell of $5f^3$ uranium, is converted for $U$=3 eV to a flat band semimetal with small heavy-carrier Fermi surfaces that will make properties sensitive to pressure, magnetic field, and off-stoichiometry, as observed experimentally. The predicted Kondo temperature around 100 K matches the experimental values from resistivity. The electric field gradients for the two Te sites are calculated by DFT+U(ED) to differ by a factor of seven, indicating a strong site distinction, while the anisotropy factor $eta=0.18$ is similar for all three sites. The calculated uranium moment $<M^2>^{1/2}$ of 3.5$mu_B$ is roughly consistent with the published experimental Curie-Weiss values of 2.8$mu_B$ and 3.3$mu_B$ (which are field-direction dependent), and the calculated separate spin and orbital moments are remarkably similar to Hunds rule values for an $f^3$ ion. The $U$=3 eV spectral density is compared with angle-integrated and angle-resolved photoemission spectra, with agreement that there is strong $5f$ character at, and for several hundred meV below, the Fermi energy. Our results support the picture that the underlying ground state of UTe$_2$ is that of a half-filled $j=frac{5}{2}$ subshell with two half-filled $m_j=pmfrac{1}{2}$ orbitals forming a narrow gap by hybridization, then driven to a conducting state by configuration mixing (spin-charge fluctuations). UTe$_2$ displays similarities to UPt$_3$ with its $5f$ dominated Fermi surfaces rather than a strongly localized Kondo lattice system.
We present magnetoresistivity measurements on the heavy-fermion superconductor UTe$_{2}$ in pulsed magnetic fields $mu_0H$ up to 68~T and temperatures $T$ from 1.4 to 80~K. Magnetic fields applied along the three crystallographic directions $mathbf{a}$ (easy magnetic axis), $mathbf{b}$, and $mathbf{c}$ (hard magnetic axes), are found to induce different phenomena - depending on the field direction - beyond the low-field suppression of the superconducting state. For $mathbf{H}parallelmathbf{a}$, a broad anomaly in the resistivity is observed at $mu_0H^*simeq10$~T and $T = 1.4$~K. For $mathbf{H}parallelmathbf{c}$, no magnetic transition nor crossover are observed. For $mathbf{H}parallelmathbf{b}$, a sharp first-order-like step in the resistivity indicates a metamagnetic transition at the field $mu_0H_m simeq 35$~T. When the temperature is raised signature of first-order metamagnetism is observed up to a critical endpoint at $T_{CEP}simeq7$~K. At higher temperatures a crossover persists up to 28~K, i.e., below the temperature $T_chi^{max} = 35$~K where the magnetic susceptibility is maximal. A sharp maximum in the Fermi-liquid quadratic coefficient $A$ of the low-temperature resistivity is found at $H_m$. It indicates an enhanced effective mass associated with critical magnetic fluctuations, possibly coupled with a Fermi surface instability. Similarly to the URhGe case, we show that UTe$_{2}$ is a candidate for field-induced reentrant superconductivity in the proximity of $H_m$.

We report first-principles and strongly-correlated calculations of the newly-discovered heavy fermion superconductor UTe$_2$. Our analyses reveal three key aspects of its magnetic, electronic, and superconducting properties, that include: (1) a two-leg ladder-type structure with strong magnetic frustrations, which might explain the absence of long-range orders and the observed magnetic and transport anisotropy; (2) quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surfaces composed of two separate electron and hole cylinders with similar nesting properties as in UGe$_2$, which may potentially promote magnetic fluctuations and help to enhance the spin-triplet pairing; (3) a unitary spin-triplet pairing state of strong spin-orbit coupling at zero field, with point nodes presumably on the heavier hole Fermi surface along the $k_x$-direction, in contrast to the previous belief of non-unitary pairing. Our proposed scenario is in excellent agreement with latest thermal conductivity measurement and provides a basis for understanding the peculiar magnetic and superconducting properties of UTe$_2$.
