In this paper, we propose an effective method for fast and accurate scene parsing called Bidirectional Alignment Network (BiAlignNet). Previously, one representative work BiSeNet~cite{bisenet} uses two different paths (Context Path and Spatial Path) to achieve balanced learning of semantics and details, respectively. However, the relationship between the two paths is not well explored. We argue that both paths can benefit each other in a complementary way. Motivated by this, we propose a novel network by aligning two-path information into each other through a learned flow field. To avoid the noise and semantic gaps, we introduce a Gated Flow Alignment Module to align both features in a bidirectional way. Moreover, to make the Spatial Path learn more detailed information, we present an edge-guided hard pixel mining loss to supervise the aligned learning process. Our method achieves 80.1% and 78.5% mIoU in validation and test set of Cityscapes while running at 30 FPS with full resolution inputs. Code and models will be available at url{https://github.com/jojacola/BiAlignNet}.

In this paper, we propose a novel scene text detection method named TextMountain. The key idea of TextMountain is making full use of border-center information. Different from previous works that treat center-border as a binary classification problem, we predict text center-border probability (TCBP) and text center-direction (TCD). The TCBP is just like a mountain whose top is text center and foot is text border. The mountaintop can separate text instances which cannot be easily achieved using semantic segmentation map and its rising direction can plan a road to top for each pixel on mountain foot at the group stage. The TCD helps TCBP learning better. Our label rules will not lead to the ambiguous problem with the transformation of angle, so the proposed method is robust to multi-oriented text and can also handle well with curved text. In inference stage, each pixel at the mountain foot needs to search the path to the mountaintop and this process can be efficiently completed in parallel, yielding the efficiency of our method compared with others. The experiments on MLT, ICDAR2015, RCTW-17 and SCUT-CTW1500 databases demonstrate that the proposed method achieves better or comparable performance in terms of both accuracy and efficiency. It is worth mentioning our method achieves an F-measure of 76.85% on MLT which outperforms the previous methods by a large margin. Code will be made available.
Large geometry (e.g., orientation) variances are the key challenges in the scene text detection. In this work, we first conduct experiments to investigate the capacity of networks for learning geometry variances on detecting scene texts, and find that networks can handle only limited text geometry variances. Then, we put forward a novel Geometry Normalization Module (GNM) with multiple branches, each of which is composed of one Scale Normalization Unit and one Orientation Normalization Unit, to normalize each text instance to one desired canonical geometry range through at least one branch. The GNM is general and readily plugged into existing convolutional neural network based text detectors to construct end-to-end Geometry Normalization Networks (GNNets). Moreover, we propose a geometry-aware training scheme to effectively train the GNNets by sampling and augmenting text instances from a uniform geometry variance distribution. Finally, experiments on popular benchmarks of ICDAR 2015 and ICDAR 2017 MLT validate that our method outperforms all the state-of-the-art approaches remarkably by obtaining one-forward test F-scores of 88.52 and 74.54 respectively.
Video scene parsing is a long-standing challenging task in computer vision, aiming to assign pre-defined semantic labels to pixels of all frames in a given video. Compared with image semantic segmentation, this task pays more attention on studying how to adopt the temporal information to obtain higher predictive accuracy. In this report, we introduce our solution for the 1st Video Scene Parsing in the Wild Challenge, which achieves a mIoU of 57.44 and obtained the 2nd place (our team name is CharlesBLWX).

Multiple human parsing aims to segment various human parts and associate each part with the corresponding instance simultaneously. This is a very challenging task due to the diverse human appearance, semantic ambiguity of different body parts, and complex background. Through analysis of multiple human parsing task, we observe that human-centric global perception and accurate instance-level parsing scoring are crucial for obtaining high-quality results. But the most state-of-the-art methods have not paid enough attention to these issues. To reverse this phenomenon, we present Renovating Parsing R-CNN (RP R-CNN), which introduces a global semantic enhanced feature pyramid network and a parsing re-scoring network into the existing high-performance pipeline. The proposed RP R-CNN adopts global semantic representation to enhance multi-scale features for generating human parsing maps, and regresses a confidence score to represent its quality. Extensive experiments show that RP R-CNN performs favorably against state-of-the-art methods on CIHP and MHP-v2 datasets. Code and models are available at https://github.com/soeaver/RP-R-CNN.

Scene parsing is challenging as it aims to assign one of the semantic categories to each pixel in scene images. Thus, pixel-level features are desired for scene parsing. However, classification networks are dominated by the discriminative portion, so directly applying classification networks to scene parsing will result in inconsistent parsing predictions within one instance and among instances of the same category. To address this problem, we propose two transform units to learn pixel-level consensus features. One is an Instance Consensus Transform (ICT) unit to learn the instance-level consensus features by aggregating features within the same instance. The other is a Category Consensus Transform (CCT) unit to pursue category-level consensus features through keeping the consensus of features among instances of the same category in scene images. The proposed ICT and CCT units are lightweight, data-driven and end-to-end trainable. The features learned by the two units are more coherent in both instance-level and category-level. Furthermore, we present the Consensus Feature Network (CFNet) based on the proposed ICT and CCT units, and demonstrate the effectiveness of each component in our method by performing extensive ablation experiments. Finally, our proposed CFNet achieves competitive performance on four datasets, including Cityscapes, Pascal Context, CamVid, and COCO Stuff.
