Terahertz (THz) communications with multi-GHz bandwidth are envisioned as a key technology for 6G systems. Ultra-massive (UM) MIMO with hybrid beamforming architectures are widely investigated to provide a high array gain to overcome the huge propagation loss. However, most of the existing hybrid beamforming architectures can only utilize the multiplexing offered by the multipath components, i.e., inter-path multiplexing, which is very limited due to the spatially sparse THz channel. In this paper, a widely-spaced multi-subarray (WSMS) hybrid beamforming architecture is proposed, which improves the multiplexing gain by exploiting a new type of intra-path multiplexing provided by the spherical-wave propagation among k widely-spaced subarrays, in addition to the inter-path multiplexing. The resulting multiplexing gain of WSMS architecture is k times of the existing architectures. To harness WSMS hybrid beamforming, a novel design problem is formulated by optimizing the number of subarrays, subarray spacing, and hybrid beamforming matrices to maximize the spectral efficiency, which is decomposed into two subproblems. An optimal closed-form solution is derived for the first hybrid beamforming subproblem, while a dominant-line-of-sight-relaxation algorithm is proposed for the second array configuration subproblem. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the WSMS architecture and proposed algorithms substantially enhance the spectral efficiency and energy efficiency.

TeraHertz (THz) communications are envisioned as a promising technology, owing to its unprecedented multi-GHz bandwidth. In this paper, wideband channel measurement campaigns at 140 GHz and 220 GHz are conducted in indoor scenarios including a meeting room and an office room. Directional antennas are utilized and rotated for resolving the multi-path components (MPCs) in the angular domain. Comparable path loss values are achieved in the 140 and 220 GHz bands. To investigate the large-scale fading characteristics for indoor THz communications, single-band close-in path loss models are developed. To further analyze the dependency on the frequency, two multi-band path loss models are analyzed, i.e., alpha-beta-gamma (ABG) and multi-frequency CI model with a frequency-weighted path loss exponent (CIF), between which the ABG model demonstrates a better fit with the measured data. Moreover, a coherent beam combination that constructively sums the signal amplitudes from various arrival directions can significantly reduce the path loss, in contrast with a non-coherent beam combination.

This paper considers a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) downlink communication system where hybrid analog-digital beamforming is employed at the base station (BS). We formulate a power minimization problem by jointly optimizing hybrid beamforming at the BS and the response matrix at the RIS, under signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints. The problem is highly challenging due to the non-convex SINR constraints as well as the non-convex unit-modulus constraints for both the phase shifts at the RIS and the analog beamforming at the BS. A penalty-based algorithm in conjunction with the manifold optimization technique is proposed to handle the problem, followed by an individual optimization method with much lower complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-art algorithm. Results also show that the joint optimization of RIS response matrix and BS hybrid beamforming is much superior to individual optimization.
Edge caching can effectively reduce backhaul burden at core network and increase quality-ofservice at wireless edge nodes. However, the beneficial role of edge caching cannot be fully realized when the offloading link is in deep fade. Fortunately, the impairments induced by wireless propagation environments could be renovated by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). In this paper, a new RIS-aided edge caching system is proposed, where a network cost minimization problem is formulated to optimize content placement at cache units, active beamforming at base station and passive phase shifting at RIS. After decoupling the content placement subproblem with hybrid beamforming design, we propose an alternating optimization algorithm to tackle the active beamforming and passive phase shifting. For active beamforming, we transform the problem into a semidefinite programming (SDP) and prove that the optimal solution of SDP is always rank-1. For passive phase shifting, we introduce block coordinate descent method to alternately optimize the auxiliary variables and the RIS phase shifts. Further, a conjugate gradient algorithm based on manifold optimization is proposed to deal with the non-convex unit-modulus constraints. Numerical results show that our RIS-aided edge caching design can effectively decrease the network cost in terms of backhaul capacity and power consumption.
Hybrid analog and digital BeamForming (HBF) is one of the enabling transceiver technologies for millimeter Wave (mmWave) Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems. This technology offers highly directional communication, which is able to confront the intrinsic characteristics of mmWave signal propagation. However, the small coherence time in mmWave systems, especially under mobility conditions, renders efficient Beam Management (BM) in standalone mmWave communication a very difficult task. In this paper, we consider HBF transceivers with planar antenna panels and design a multi-level beam codebook for the analog beamformer comprising flat top beams with variable widths. These beams exhibit an almost constant array gain for the whole desired angle width, thereby facilitating efficient hierarchical BM. Focusing on the uplink communication, we present a novel beam training algorithm with dynamic beam ordering, which is suitable for the stringent latency requirements of the latest mmWave standard discussions. Our simulation results showcase the latency performance improvement and received signal-to-noise ratio with different variations of the proposed scheme over the optimum beam training scheme based on exhaustive narrow beam search.
We propose multi-dimensional short blocklength probabilistic shaping to increase the nonlinear tolerance gain in digital subcarrier multiplexing transmission systems and demonstrate an improvement in performance compared to lower dimensional formats.
