We prove a Gannon-Lee theorem for non-globally hyperbolic Lo-rentzian metrics of regularity $C^1$, the most general regularity class currently available in the context of the classical singularity theorems. Along the way we also prove that any maximizing causal curve in a $C^1$-spacetime is a geodesic and hence of $C^2$-regularity.
We show that the Hawking--Penrose singularity theorem, and the generalisation of this theorem due to Galloway and Senovilla, continue to hold for Lorentzian metrics that are of $C^{1, 1}$-regularity. We formulate appropriate wea
Within the framework of Lagrangian mechanics, the conservativeness of the hydrostatic forces acting on a floating rigid body is proved. The representation of the associated hydrostatic potential is explicitly worked out. The invariance of the resulting Lagrangian with respect surge, sway and yaw motions is used in connection with the Routh procedure in order to convert the original dynamical problem into a reduced one, in three independent variables. This allows to put on rational grounds the study of hydrostatic equilibrium, introducing the concept of pseudo--stability, meant as stability with respect to the reduced problem. The small oscillations of the system around a pseudo-stable equilibrium configuration are discussed.
We consider restrictions placed by geodesic completeness on spacetimes possessing a null parallel vector field, the so-called Brinkmann spacetimes. This class of spacetimes includes important idealized gravitational wave models in General Relativity, namely the plane-fronted waves with parallel rays, or pp-waves, which in turn have been intensely and fruitfully studied in the mathematical and physical literatures for over half a century. More concretely, we prove a restricted version of a conjectural analogue for Brinkmann spacetimes of a rigidity result obtained by M.T. Anderson for stationary spacetimes. We also highlight its relation with a long-standing 1962 conjecture by Ehlers and Kundt. Indeed, it turns out that the subclass of Brinkmann spacetimes we consider in our main theorem is enough to settle an important special case of the Ehlers-Kundt conjecture in terms of the well known class of Cahen-Wallach spaces.
We give an elementary probabilistic proof of Veraverbekes Theorem for the asymptotic distribution of the maximum of a random walk with negative drift and heavy-tailed increments. The proof gives insight into the principle that the maximum is in general attained through a single large jump.
We prove that exists a Lindstedt series that holds when a Hamiltonian is driven by a perturbation going to infinity. This series appears to be dual to a standard Lindstedt series as it can be obtained by interchanging the role of the perturbation and the unperturbed system. The existence of this dual series implies that a dual KAM theorem holds and, when a leading order Hamiltonian exists that is non degenerate, the effect of tori reforming can be observed with a system passing from regular motion to fully developed chaos and back to regular motion with the reappearance of invariant tori. We apply these results to a perturbed harmonic oscillator proving numerically the appearance of tori reforming. Tori reforming appears as an effect limiting chaotic behavior to a finite range of parameter space of some Hamiltonian systems. Dual KAM theorem, as proved here, applies when the perturbation, combined with a kinetic term, provides again an integrable system.
