Images encode both the state of the world and its content. The former is useful for tasks such as planning and control, and the latter for classification. The automatic extraction of this information is challenging because of the high-dimensionality and entangled encoding inherent to the image representation. This article introduces two theoretical approaches aimed at the resolution of these challenges. The approaches allow for the interpolation and extrapolation of images from an image sequence by joint estimation of the image representation and the generators of the sequence dynamics. In the first approach, the image representations are learned using probabilistic PCA cite{tipping1999probabilistic}. The linear-Gaussian conditional distributions allow for a closed form analytical description of the latent distributions but assumes the underlying image manifold is a linear subspace. In the second approach, the image representations are learned using probabilistic nonlinear PCA which relieves the linear manifold assumption at the cost of requiring a variational approximation of the latent distributions. In both approaches, the underlying dynamics of the image sequence are modelled explicitly to disentangle them from the image representations. The dynamics themselves are modelled with Lie group structure which enforces the desirable properties of smoothness and composability of inter-image transformations.

In this paper we present a new procedure to obtain unitary and irreducible representations of Lie groups starting from the cotangent bundle of the group (the cotangent group). We discuss some applications of the construction in quantum-optics problems.
Let $Gamma$ be a generic subgroup of the multiplicative group $mathbb{C}^*$ of nonzero complex numbers. We define a class of Lie algebras associated to $Gamma$, called twisted $Gamma$-Lie algebras, which is a natural generalization of the twisted affine Lie algebras. Starting from an arbitrary even sublattice $Q$ of $mathbb Z^N$ and an arbitrary finite order isometry of $mathbb Z^N$ preserving $Q$, we construct a family of twisted $Gamma$-vertex operators acting on generalized Fock spaces which afford irreducible representations for certain twisted $Gamma$-Lie algebras. As application, this recovers a number of known vertex operator realizations for infinite dimensional Lie algebras, such as twisted affine Lie algebras, extended affine Lie algebras of type $A$, trigonometric Lie algebras of series $A$ and $B$, unitary Lie algebras, and $BC$-graded Lie algebras.

In this thesis new objects to the existing set of invariants of Lie algebras are added. These invariant characteristics are capable of describing the nilpotent parametric continuum of Lie algebras. The properties of these invariants, in view of possible alternative classifications of Lie algebras, are formulated and their behaviour on known lower--dimensional Lie algebras investigated. It is demonstrated that these invariants, in view of their application on graded contractions of sl(3,C), are also effective in higher dimensions. A necessary contraction criterion involving these invariants is derived and applied to lower--dimensional cases. Possible application of these invariant characteristics to Jordan algebras is investigated.
This paper presents algebraic methods for the study of polynomial relative invariants, when the group G formed by the symmetries and relative symmetries is a compact Lie group. We deal with the case when the subgroup H of symmetries is normal in G with index m, m greater or equal to 2. For this, we develop the invariant theory of compact Lie groups acting on complex vector spaces. This is the starting point for the study of relative invariants and the computation of their generators. We first obtain the space of the invariants under the subgroup $H$ of $Gamma$ as a direct sum of $m$ submodules over the ring of invariants under the whole group. Then, based on this decomposition, we construct a Hilbert basis of the ring of G-invariants from a Hilbert basis of the ring of H-invariants. In both results the knowledge of the relative Reynolds operators defined on H-invariants is shown to be an essential tool to obtain the invariants under the whole group. The theory is illustrated with some examples.
Variational representations of divergences and distances between high-dimensional probability distributions offer significant theoretical insights and practical advantages in numerous research areas. Recently, they have gained popularity in machine learning as a tractable and scalable approach for training probabilistic models and for statistically differentiating between data distributions. Their advantages include: 1) They can be estimated from data as statistical averages. 2) Such representations can leverage the ability of neural networks to efficiently approximate optimal solutions in function spaces. However, a systematic and practical approach to improving tightness of such variational formulas, and accordingly accelerate statistical learning and estimation from data, is lacking. Here we develop such a methodology for building new, tighter variational representations of divergences. Our approach relies on improved objective functionals constructed via an auxiliary optimization problem. Furthermore, the calculation of the functional Hessian of objective functionals unveils local curvature differences around the common optimal variational solution; this quantifies and orders the tightness gains between different variational representations. Finally, numerical simulations utilizing neural-network optimization demonstrate that tighter representations can result in significantly faster learning and more accurate estimation of divergences in both synthetic and real datasets (of more than 1000 dimensions), often accelerated by nearly an order of magnitude.
