The connected vehicle paradigm empowers vehicles with the capability to communicate with neighboring vehicles and infrastructure, shifting the role of vehicles from a transportation tool to an intelligent service platform. Meanwhile, the transportation electrification pushes forward the electric vehicle (EV) commercialization to reduce the greenhouse gas emission by petroleum combustion. The unstoppable trends of connected vehicle and EVs transform the traditional vehicular system to an electric vehicular network (EVN), a clean, mobile, and safe system. However, due to the mobility and heterogeneity of the EVN, improper management of the network could result in charging overload and data congestion. Thus, energy and information management of the EVN should be carefully studied. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on the deployment and management of EVN considering all three aspects of energy flow, data communication, and computation. We first introduce the management framework of EVN. Then, research works on the EV aggregator (AG) deployment are reviewed to provide energy and information infrastructure for the EVN. Based on the deployed AGs, we present the research work review on EV scheduling that includes both charging and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) scheduling. Moreover, related works on information communication and computing are surveyed under each scenario. Finally, we discuss open research issues in the EVN.
Next generation wireless networks are expected to be extremely complex due to their massive heterogeneity in terms of the types of network architectures they incorporate, the types and numbers of smart IoT devices they serve, and the types of emerging applications they support. In such large-scale and heterogeneous networks (HetNets), radio resource allocation and management (RRAM) becomes one of the major challenges encountered during system design and deployment. In this context, emerging Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) techniques are expected to be one of the main enabling technologies to address the RRAM in future wireless HetNets. In this paper, we conduct a systematic in-depth, and comprehensive survey of the applications of DRL techniques in RRAM for next generation wireless networks. Towards this, we first overview the existing traditional RRAM methods and identify their limitations that motivate the use of DRL techniques in RRAM. Then, we provide a comprehensive review of the most widely used DRL algorithms to address RRAM problems, including the value- and policy-based algorithms. The advantages, limitations, and use-cases for each algorithm are provided. We then conduct a comprehensive and in-depth literature review and classify existing related works based on both the radio resources they are addressing and the type of wireless networks they are investigating. To this end, we carefully identify the types of DRL algorithms utilized in each related work, the elements of these algorithms, and the main findings of each related work. Finally, we highlight important open challenges and provide insights into several future research directions in the context of DRL-based RRAM. This survey is intentionally designed to guide and stimulate more research endeavors towards building efficient and fine-grained DRL-based RRAM schemes for future wireless networks.
We develop and analyze a measure-valued fluid model keeping track of parking and charging requirements of electric vehicles in a local distribution grid. We show how this model arises as an accumulation point of an appropriately scaled sequence of stochastic network models. The invariant point of the fluid model encodes the electrical characteristics of the network and the stochastic behavior of its users, and it is characterized, when it exists, by the solution of a so-called Alternating Current Optimal Power Flow (ACOPF) problem.
Wireless networks have been widely deployed for many Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications, like smart cities and precision agriculture. Low Power Wide Area Networking (LPWAN) is an emerging IoT networking paradigm to meet three key requirements of IoT applications, i.e., low cost, large scale deployment and high energy efficiency. Among all available LPWAN technologies, LoRa networking has attracted much attention from both academia and industry, since it specifies an open standard and allows us to build autonomous LPWAN networks without any third-party infrastructure. Many LoRa networks have been developed recently, e.g., managing solar plants in Carson City, Nevada, USA and power monitoring in Lyon and Grenoble, France. However, there are still many research challenges to develop practical LoRa networks, e.g., link coordination, resource allocation, reliable transmissions and security. This article provides a comprehensive survey on LoRa networks, including the technical challenges of deploying LoRa networks and recent solutions. Based on our detailed analysis of current solutions, some open issues of LoRa networking are discussed. The goal of this survey paper is to inspire more works on improving the performance of LoRa networks and enabling more practical deployments.
This paper presents a novel mutual information (MI) matrix based method for fault detection. Given a $m$-dimensional fault process, the MI matrix is a $m times m$ matrix in which the $(i,j)$-th entry measures the MI values between the $i$-th dimension and the $j$-th dimension variables. We introduce the recently proposed matrix-based Renyis $alpha$-entropy functional to estimate MI values in each entry of the MI matrix. The new estimator avoids density estimation and it operates on the eigenspectrum of a (normalized) symmetric positive definite (SPD) matrix, which makes it well suited for industrial process. We combine different orders of statistics of the transformed components (TCs) extracted from the MI matrix to constitute the detection index, and derive a simple similarity index to monitor the changes of characteristics of the underlying process in consecutive windows. We term the overall methodology projections of mutual information matrix (PMIM). Experiments on both synthetic data and the benchmark Tennessee Eastman process demonstrate the interpretability of PMIM in identifying the root variables that cause the faults, and its superiority in detecting the occurrence of faults in terms of the improved fault detection rate (FDR) and the lowest false alarm rate (FAR). The advantages of PMIM is also less sensitive to hyper-parameters. The advantages of PMIM is also less sensitive to hyper-parameters. In this work, a neural network based terramechanics model and terrain estimator are presented with an outlook for optimal control applications such as model predictive control. Recognizing the limitations of the state-of-the-art terramechanics models in terms of operating conditions, computational cost, and continuous differentiability for gradient-based optimization, an efficient and twice continuously differentiable terramechanics model is developed using neural networks for dynamic operations on deformable terrains. It is demonstrated that the neural network terramechanics model is able to predict the lateral tire forces accurately and efficiently compared to the Soil Contact Model as a state-of-the-art model. Furthermore, the neural network terramechanics model is implemented within a terrain estimator and it is shown that using this model the estimator converges within around 2% of the true terrain parameter. Finally, with model predictive control applications in mind, which typically rely on bicycle models for their predictions, it is demonstrated that utilizing the estimated terrain parameter can reduce prediction errors of a bicycle model by orders of magnitude. The result is an efficient, dynamic, twice continuously differentiable terramechanics model and estimator that has inherent advantages for implementation in model predictive control as compared to previously established models.
