We propose a novel neural network embedding approach to model power transmission grids, in which high voltage lines are disconnected and reconnected with one-another from time to time, either accidentally or willfully. We call our architeture LEAP net, for Latent Encoding of Atypical Perturbation. Our method implements a form of transfer learning, permitting to train on a few source domains, then generalize to new target domains, without learning on any example of that domain. We evaluate the viability of this technique to rapidly assess cu-rative actions that human operators take in emergency situations, using real historical data, from the French high voltage power grid.

This paper presents a novel parameter calibration approach for power system stability models using automatic data generation and advanced deep learning technology. A PMU-measurement-based event playback approach is used to identify potential inaccurate parameters and automatically generate extensive simulation data, which are used for training a convolutional neural network (CNN). The accurate parameters will be predicted by the well-trained CNN model and validated by original PMU measurements. The accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed deep learning approach have been validated through extensive simulation and field data.
Recent advances in power system State Estimation (SE) have included equivalent circuit models for representing measurement data that allows incorporation of both PMU and RTU measurements within the state estimator. In this paper, we introduce a probabilistic framework with a new RTU model that renders the complete SE problem linear while not affecting its accuracy. It is demonstrated that the probabilistic state of a system can be efficiently and accurately estimated not only with the uncertainties from the measurement data, but also while including variations from transmission network models. To demonstrate accuracy and scalability we present probabilistic state estimation results for the 82k test case that represents the transmission level grid of the entire USA. It is shown that the estimated state distributions include the true grid state, while their mean exactly corresponds to the estimated deterministic state obtained from the nonlinear state estimator.
The power network reconfiguration algorithm with an R modeling approach evaluates its behavior in computing new reconfiguration topologies for the power grid in the context of the Smart Grid. The power distribution network modelling with the R language is used to represent the network and support computation of different algorithm configurations for the evaluation of new reconfiguration topologies. This work presents a reconfiguration solution of distribution networks, with a construction of an algorithm that receiving the network configuration data and the nodal measurements and from these data build a radial network, after this and using a branch exchange algorithm And verifying the best configuration of the network through artificial intelligence, so that there are no unnecessary changes during the operation, and applied an algorithm that analyses the load levels, to suggest changes in the network.
Commercial building heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems have been studied for providing ancillary services to power grids via demand response (DR). One critical issue is to estimate the counterfactual baseline power consumption that would have prevailed without DR. Baseline methods have been developed based on whole building electric load profiles. New methods are necessary to estimate the baseline power consumption of HVAC sub-components (e.g., supply and return fans), which have different characteristics compared to that of the whole building. Tensor completion can estimate the unobserved entries of multi-dimensional tensors describing complex data sets. It exploits high-dimensional data to capture granular insights into the problem. This paper proposes to use it for baselining HVAC fan power, by utilizing its capability of capturing dominant fan power patterns. The tensor completion method is evaluated using HVAC fan power data from several buildings at the University of Michigan, and compared with several existing methods. The tensor completion method generally outperforms the benchmarks.
A machine learning algorithm is developed to forecast the CO2 emission intensities in electrical power grids in the Danish bidding zone DK2, distinguishing between average and marginal emissions. The analysis was done on data set comprised of a large number (473) of explanatory variables such as power production, demand, import, weather conditions etc. collected from selected neighboring zones. The number was reduced to less than 50 using both LASSO (a penalized linear regression analysis) and a forward feature selection algorithm. Three linear regression models that capture different aspects of the data (non-linearities and coupling of variables etc.) were created and combined into a final model using Softmax weighted average. Cross-validation is performed for debiasing and autoregressive moving average model (ARIMA) implemented to correct the residuals, making the final model the variant with exogenous inputs (ARIMAX). The forecasts with the corresponding uncertainties are given for two time horizons, below and above six hours. Marginal emissions came up independent of any conditions in the DK2 zone, suggesting that the marginal generators are located in the neighbouring zones. The developed methodology can be applied to any bidding zone in the European electricity network without requiring detailed knowledge about the zone.
