We demonstrate the electromagnetic performance of waveguides for femtosecond electron beam bunch manipulation and compression with strong-field terahertz (THz) pulses. The compressor structure is a dispersion-free exponentially-tapered parallel-plate waveguide (PPWG) that can focus single-cycle THz pulses along one dimension. We show test results of the tapered PPWG structure using electro-optic sampling (EOS) at the interaction region with peak fields of at least 300 kV/cm given 0.9 uJ of incoming THz energy. We also present a modified shorted design of the tapered PPWG for better beam manipulation and reduced magnetic field as an alternative to a dual-feed approach. As an example, we demonstrate that with 5 uJ of THz energy, the PPWG compresses a 2.5 MeV electron bunch by a compression factor of more than 4 achieving a bunch length of about 18 fs.
We present the first demonstration of THz-driven bunch compression and timing stabilization of a few-fC relativistic electron beam with kinetic energy of 2.5 MeV using quasi-single-cycle strong field THz radiation in a shorted parallel-plate structure. Compression by nearly a factor of 3 produced a 39 fs rms bunch length and a reduction in timing jitter by more than a factor of 2, to 31 fs rms, offering a significant improvement to beam performance for applications like ultrafast electron diffraction. This THz-driven technique provides a critical step towards unprecedented timing resolution in ultrafast sciences and other accelerator applications using femtosecond-scale electron beams.
Plasma waves generated in the wake of intense, relativistic laser or particle beams can accelerate electron bunches to giga-electronvolt (GeV) energies in centimetre-scale distances. This allows the realization of compact accelerators having emerging applications, ranging from modern light sources such as the free-electron laser (FEL) to energy frontier lepton colliders. In a plasma wakefield accelerator, such multi-gigavolt-per-metre (GV m$^{-1}$) wakefields can accelerate witness electron bunches that are either externally injected or captured from the background plasma. Here we demonstrate optically triggered injection and acceleration of electron bunches, generated in a multi-component hydrogen and helium plasma employing a spatially aligned and synchronized laser pulse. This plasma photocathode decouples injection from wake excitation by liberating tunnel-ionized helium electrons directly inside the plasma cavity, where these cold electrons are then rapidly boosted to relativistic velocities. The injection regime can be accessed via optical density down-ramp injection, is highly tunable and paves the way to generation of electron beams with unprecedented low transverse emittance, high current and 6D-brightness. This experimental path opens numerous prospects for transformative plasma wakefield accelerator applications based on ultra-high brightness beams.
In this paper, we introduce and study parallel-plate waveguides formed by two penetrable metasurfaces having arbitrary isotropic sheet impedances. We investigate guided modes of this structure and derive the corresponding dispersion relations. The conditions under which transverse magnetic and transverse electric modes can exist are discussed, and different scenarios including lossless (reactive) metasurfaces, gain-and-loss sheets and extreme cases are under general consideration. Resonant and non-resonant dispersive sheets and corresponding extreme cases are investigated. Our theoretical results are confirmed with full-wave simulated results considering practical realizations of the proposed parallel-plate waveguide which exploit two frequency-selective surfaces. Finally, the obtained theoretical formulas are applied to study the dispersion diagrams for waves along resonant sheets at different distances between the two identical or different metasurfaces. We hope that this study is useful for future applications at both microwave and optical regimes.
Coulomb interaction between charged particles is a well-known phenomenon in many areas of researches. In general the Coulomb repulsion force broadens the pulse width of an electron bunch and limits the temporal resolution of many scientific facilities such as ultrafast electron diffraction and x-ray free-electron lasers. Here we demonstrate a scheme that actually makes use of Coulomb force to compress a relativistic electron beam. Furthermore, we show that the Coulomb-driven bunch compression process does not introduce additional timing jitter, which is in sharp contrast to the conventional radio-frequency buncher technique. Our work not only leads to enhanced temporal resolution in electron beam based ultrafast instruments that may provide new opportunities in probing material systems far from equilibrium, but also opens a promising direction for advanced beam manipulation through self-field interactions.
We present theoretical and numerical studies of longitudinal compression and transverse matching of electron bunch before injecting into the Laser-plasma Wake Field Accelerator (LWFA) foreseen at the ESCULAP project in ORSAY. Longitudinal compression is performed with a dogleg chicane, the chicane is designed based on theory of beam optics, beam dynamics in dogleg is studied with ImpactT and cross checked with CSRtrack, both 3D space charge (SC) and coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) effects are included. Simulation results show that the energy chirp at the dogleg entrance should be smaller than the nominal optic design value, in order to compensate the negative energy chirp increase caused by longitudinal SC, while CSR can be ignored in our case. With an optimized configuration, the electron bunch ($sim$10MeV, 10pC) is compressed from 0.9ps RMS to 70fs RMS (53fs FWHM), with a peak current of 152A. Transverse matching is realized with a doublet and a triplet, they are matched with Madx and the electron bunch is tracked with ImpactT, simulation results show little difference with the nominal design values, that is due to the SC effect. Finally, by simply adjusting the quadrupole strength, a preliminary optimized configuration has been achieved, that matches the Courant-Snyder (C-S) parameters to $alpha_{x}=0.01$,$alpha_{y}=-0.02$, $beta_{x}=0.014$m,$beta_{y}=0.012$m at the plasma entrance.
