We investigated the magnetoterahertz response of the Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$As$_2$ and observed a particularly low frequency optical phonon, as well as a very prominent and field sensitive cyclotron resonance. As the cyclotron frequency is tuned with field to pass through the phonon, the phonon become circularly polarized as shown by a notable splitting in their response to right- and left-hand polarized light. This splitting can be expressed as an effective phonon magnetic moment that is approximately 2.7 times the Bohr magneton, which is almost four orders of magnitude larger than ab initio calculations predict for phonon magnetic moments in nonmagnetic insulators. This exceedingly large value is due to the coupling of the phonons to the cyclotron motion and is controlled directly by the electron-phonon coupling constant. This field tunable circular-polarization selective coupling provides new functionality for nonlinear optics to create light-induced topological phases in Dirac semimetals.

We measured the optical reflectivity of [001]-oriented $n$-doped Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ in a broad frequency range (50 - 22000 cm$^{-1}$) for temperatures from 10 to 300 K. The optical conductivity, $sigma(omega) = sigma_{1}(omega) + {rm i}sigma_{2}(omega)$, is isotropic within the (001) plane; its real part follows a power law, $sigma_{1}(omega) propto omega^{1.65}$, in a large interval from 2000 to 8000 cm$^{-1}$. This behavior is caused by interband transitions between two Dirac bands, which are effectively described by a sublinear dispersion relation, $E(k) propto lvert k rvert ^{0.6}$. The momentum-averaged Fermi velocity of the carriers in these bands is energy dependent and ranges from $1.2 times 10^{5}$ to $3 times 10^{5}$ m/s, depending on the distance from the Dirac points. We detect a gaplike feature in $sigma_{1}(omega)$ and associate it with the Fermi level positioned around $100$ meV above the Dirac points.
A van der Waals coupled Weyl semimetal material NbIrTe4 is investigated by combining scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and first principles calculations. We observe a sharp peak in the tunneling conductance near the zero bias energy, and its origin is ascribed to a van Hove singularity associated with a Lifshitz transition of the topologically none trivial Fermi arc states. Furthermore, tunneling spectroscopy measurements show a surprisingly large signature of electron boson coupling, which presumably represents anomalously enhanced electron phonon coupling through the enhanced charge susceptibility. Our finding in van der Waals coupled material is particularly invaluable due to applicable exfoliation technology for searching exotic topological states by further manipulating near Fermi energy van Hove singularity in nanometer scale flakes and their devices.
Dirac semi-metals show a linear electronic dispersion in three dimension described by two copies of the Weyl equation, a theoretical description of massless relativistic fermions. At the surface of a crystal, the breakdown of fermion chirality is expected to produce topological surface states without any counterparts in high-energy physics nor conventional condensed matter systems, the so-called Fermi Arcs. Here we present Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations involving the Fermi Arc states in Focused Ion Beam prepared microstructures of Cd$_3$As$_2$. Their unusual magnetic field periodicity and dependence on sample thickness can be well explained by recent theoretical work predicting novel quantum paths weaving the Fermi Arcs together with chiral bulk states, forming Weyl orbits. In contrast to conventional cyclotron orbits, these are governed by the chiral bulk dynamics rather than the common momentum transfer due to the Lorentz force. Our observations provide evidence for direct access to the topological properties of charge in a transport experiment, a first step towards their potential application.
The traditional theory of magnetic moments for chiral phonons is based on the picture of the circular motion of the Born effective charge, typically yielding a small fractional value of the nuclear magneton. Here we investigate the adiabatic evolution of electronic states induced by lattice vibration of a chiral phonon and obtain an electronic orbital magnetization in the form of a topological second Chern form. We find that the traditional theory needs to be refined by introducing a $bm{k}$ resolved Born effective charge, and identify another contribution from the phonon-modified electronic energy together with the momentum-space Berry curvature. The second Chern form can diverge when there is a Yangs monopole near the parameter space of interest as illustrated by considering a phonon at the Brillouin zone corner in a gaped graphene model. We also find large magnetic moments for the optical phonon in bulk topological materials where non-topological contribution is also important. The magnetic moment experiences a sign change when the band inversion happens.

Emergent Lorentz symmetry and chiral anomaly are well known to play an essential role in anomalous transport phenomena of Weyl metals. In particular, the former causes a Berry-curvature induced orbital magnetic moment to modify the group velocity of Weyl electrons, and the latter results in the chiral magnetic effect to be responsible for a dissipationless longitudinal current channel of the bulk. In this study, we verify that intertwined these two effects can be measured in Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations, where a double-peak structure of the SdH oscillation appears to cause a kink in the Landau fan diagram. We examine three different cases which cover all possible experimental situations of external electric/magnetic fields and identify the experimental condition for the existence of the double-peak structure. We claim that interplay of the orbital magnetic moment and the chiral magnetic effect in SdH quantum oscillations is an interesting feature of the Weyl metal state.
