The goal of case-based retrieval is to assist physicians in the clinical decision making process, by finding relevant medical literature in large archives. We propose a research that aims at improving the effectiveness of case-based retrieval systems through the use of automatically created document-level semantic networks. The proposed research tackles different aspects of information systems and leverages the recent advancements in information extraction and relational learning to revisit and advance the core ideas of concept-centered hypertext models. We propose a two-step methodology that in the first step addresses the automatic creation of document-level semantic networks, then in the second step it designs methods that exploit such document representations to retrieve relevant cases from medical literature. For the automatic creation of documents semantic networks, we design a combination of information extraction techniques and relational learning models. Mining concepts and relations from text, information extraction techniques represent the core of the document-level semantic networks building process. On the other hand, relational learning models have the task of enriching the graph with additional connections that have not been detected by information extraction algorithms and strengthening the confidence score of extracted relations. For the retrieval of relevant medical literature, we investigate methods that are capable of comparing the documents semantic networks in terms of structure and semantics. The automatic extraction of semantic relations from documents, and their centrality in the creation of the documents semantic networks, represent our attempt to go one step further than previous graph-based approaches.

Information Retrieval (IR) aims at retrieving documents that are most relevant to a query provided by a user. Traditional techniques rely mostly on syntactic methods. In some cases, however, links at a deeper semantic level must be considered. In this paper, we explore a type of IR task in which documents describe sequences of events, and queries are about the state of the world after such events. In this context, successfully matching documents and query requires considering the events possibly implicit, uncertain effects and side-effects. We begin by analyzing the problem, then propose an action language based formalization, and finally automate the corresponding IR task using Answer Set Programming.
Search engines often follow a two-phase paradigm where in the first stage (the retrieval stage) an initial set of documents is retrieved and in the second stage (the re-ranking stage) the documents are re-ranked to obtain the final result list. While deep neural networks were shown to improve the performance of the re-ranking stage in previous works, there is little literature about using deep neural networks to improve the retrieval stage. In this paper, we study the merits of combining deep neural network models and lexical models for the retrieval stage. A hybrid approach, which leverages both semantic (deep neural network-based) and lexical (keyword matching-based) retrieval models, is proposed. We perform an empirical study, using a publicly available TREC collection, which demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach and sheds light on the different characteristics of the semantic approach, the lexical approach, and their combination.

The multilabel learning problem with large number of labels, features, and data-points has generated a tremendous interest recently. A recurring theme of these problems is that only a few labels are active in any given datapoint as compared to the total number of labels. However, only a small number of existing work take direct advantage of this inherent extreme sparsity in the label space. By the virtue of Restricted Isometry Property (RIP), satisfied by many random ensembles, we propose a novel procedure for multilabel learning known as RIPML. During the training phase, in RIPML, labels are projected onto a random low-dimensional subspace followed by solving a least-square problem in this subspace. Inference is done by a k-nearest neighbor (kNN) based approach. We demonstrate the effectiveness of RIPML by conducting extensive simulations and comparing results with the state-of-the-art linear dimensionality reduction based approaches.
Cross-media retrieval is to return the results of various media types corresponding to the query of any media type. Existing researches generally focus on coarse-grained cross-media retrieval. When users submit an image of Slaty-backed Gull as a query, coarse-grained cross-media retrieval treats it as Bird, so that users can only get the results of Bird, which may include other bird species with similar appearance (image and video), descriptions (text) or sounds (audio), such as Herring Gull. Such coarse-grained cross-media retrieval is not consistent with human lifestyle, where we generally have the fine-grained requirement of returning the exactly relevant results of Slaty-backed Gull instead of Herring Gull. However, few researches focus on fine-grained cross-media retrieval, which is a highly challenging and practical task. Therefore, in this paper, we first construct a new benchmark for fine-grained cross-media retrieval, which consists of 200 fine-grained subcategories of the Bird, and contains 4 media types, including image, text, video and audio. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first benchmark with 4 media types for fine-grained cross-media retrieval. Then, we propose a uniform deep model, namely FGCrossNet, which simultaneously learns 4 types of media without discriminative treatments. We jointly consider three constraints for better common representation learning: classification constraint ensures the learning of discriminative features, center constraint ensures the compactness characteristic of the features of the same subcategory, and ranking constraint ensures the sparsity characteristic of the features of different subcategories. Extensive experiments verify the usefulness of the new benchmark and the effectiveness of our FGCrossNet. They will be made available at https://github.com/PKU-ICST-MIPL/FGCrossNet_ACMMM2019.
While current information retrieval systems are effective for known-item retrieval where the searcher provides a precise name or identifier for the item being sought, systems tend to be much less effective for cases where the searcher is unable to express a precise name or identifier. We refer to this as tip of the tongue (TOT) known-item retrieval, named after the cognitive state of not being able to retrieve an item from memory. Using movie search as a case study, we explore the characteristics of questions posed by searchers in TOT states in a community question answering website. We analyze how searchers express their information needs during TOT states in the movie domain. Specifically, what information do searchers remember about the item being sought and how do they convey this information? Our results suggest that searchers use a combination of information about: (1) the content of the item sought, (2) the context in which they previously engaged with the item, and (3) previous attempts to find the item using other resources (e.g., search engines). Additionally, searchers convey information by sometimes expressing uncertainty (i.e., hedging), opinions, emotions, and by performing relative (vs. absolute) comparisons with attributes of the item. As a result of our analysis, we believe that searchers in TOT states may require specialized query understanding methods or document representations. Finally, our preliminary retrieval experiments show the impact of each information type presented in information requests on retrieval performance.
