While neural networks for learning representation of multi-view data have been previously proposed as one of the state-of-the-art multi-view dimension reduction techniques, how to make the representation discriminative with only a small amount of labeled data is not well-studied. We introduce a semi-supervised neural network model, named Multi-view Discriminative Neural Network (MDNN), for multi-view problems. MDNN finds nonlinear view-specific mappings by projecting samples to a common feature space using multiple coupled deep networks. It is capable of leveraging both labeled and unlabeled data to project multi-view data so that samples from different classes are separated and those from the same class are clustered together. It also uses the inter-view correlation between views to exploit the available information in both the labeled and unlabeled data. Extensive experiments conducted on four datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for multi-view semi-supervised learning.

In high-dimensional data space, semi-supervised feature learning based on Euclidean distance shows instability under a broad set of conditions. Furthermore, the scarcity and high cost of labels prompt us to explore new semi-supervised learning methods with the fewest labels. In this paper, we develop a novel Minor Constraint Disturbances-based Deep Semi-supervised Feature Learning framework (MCD-DSFL) from the perspective of probability distribution for feature representation. There are two fundamental modules in the proposed framework: one is a Minor Constraint Disturbances-based restricted Boltzmann machine with Gaussian visible units (MCDGRBM) for modelling continuous data and the other is a Minor Constraint Disturbances-based restricted Boltzmann machine (MCDRBM) for modelling binary data. The Minor Constraint Disturbances (MCD) consist of less instance-level constraints which are produced by only two randomly selected labels from each class. The Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergences of the MCD are fused into the Contrastive Divergence (CD) learning for training the proposed MCDGRBM and MCDRBM models. Then, the probability distributions of hidden layer features are as similar as possible in the same class and they are as dissimilar as possible in the different classes simultaneously. Despite the weak influence of the MCD for our shallow models (MCDGRBM and MCDRBM), the proposed deep MCD-DSFL framework improves the representation capability significantly under its leverage effect. The semi-supervised strategy based on the KL divergence of the MCD significantly reduces the reliance on the labels and improves the stability of the semi-supervised feature learning in high-dimensional space simultaneously.
Domain adaptation aims to exploit the knowledge in source domain to promote the learning tasks in target domain, which plays a critical role in real-world applications. Recently, lots of deep learning approaches based on autoencoders have achieved a significance performance in domain adaptation. However, most existing methods focus on minimizing the distribution divergence by putting the source and target data together to learn global feature representations, while they do not consider the local relationship between instances in the same category from different domains. To address this problem, we propose a novel Semi-Supervised Representation Learning framework via Dual Autoencoders for domain adaptation, named SSRLDA. More specifically, we extract richer feature representations by learning the global and local feature representations simultaneously using two novel autoencoders, which are referred to as marginalized denoising autoencoder with adaptation distribution (MDAad) and multi-class marginalized denoising autoencoder (MMDA) respectively. Meanwhile, we make full use of label information to optimize feature representations. Experimental results show that our proposed approach outperforms several state-of-the-art baseline methods.
As a subset of unsupervised representation learning, self-supervised representation learning adopts self-defined signals as supervision and uses the learned representation for downstream tasks, such as object detection and image captioning. Many proposed approaches for self-supervised learning follow naturally a multi-view perspective, where the input (e.g., original images) and the self-supervised signals (e.g., augmented images) can be seen as two redundant views of the data. Building from this multi-view perspective, this paper provides an information-theoretical framework to better understand the properties that encourage successful self-supervised learning. Specifically, we demonstrate that self-supervised learned representations can extract task-relevant information and discard task-irrelevant information. Our theoretical framework paves the way to a larger space of self-supervised learning objective design. In particular, we propose a composite objective that bridges the gap between prior contrastive and predictive learning objectives, and introduce an additional objective term to discard task-irrelevant information. To verify our analysis, we conduct controlled experiments to evaluate the impact of the composite objectives. We also explore our frameworks empirical generalization beyond the multi-view perspective, where the cross-view redundancy may not be clearly observed.
To explore underlying complementary information from multiple views, in this paper, we propose a novel Latent Multi-view Semi-Supervised Classification (LMSSC) method. Unlike most existing multi-view semi-supervised classification methods that learn the graph using original features, our method seeks an underlying latent representation and performs graph learning and label propagation based on the learned latent representation. With the complementarity of multiple views, the latent representation could depict the data more comprehensively than every single view individually, accordingly making the graph more accurate and robust as well. Finally, LMSSC integrates latent representation learning, graph construction, and label propagation into a unified framework, which makes each subtask optimized. Experimental results on real-world benchmark datasets validate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Multi-view clustering is an important research topic due to its capability to utilize complementary information from multiple views. However, there are few methods to consider the negative impact caused by certain views with unclear clustering structures, resulting in poor multi-view clustering performance. To address this drawback, we propose self-supervised discriminative feature learning for deep multi-view clustering (SDMVC). Concretely, deep autoencoders are applied to learn embedded features for each view independently. To leverage the multi-view complementary information, we concatenate all views embedded features to form the global features, which can overcome the negative impact of some views unclear clustering structures. In a self-supervised manner, pseudo-labels are obtained to build a unified target distribution to perform multi-view discriminative feature learning. During this process, global discriminative information can be mined to supervise all views to learn more discriminative features, which in turn are used to update the target distribution. Besides, this unified target distribution can make SDMVC learn consistent cluster assignments, which accomplishes the clustering consistency of multiple views while preserving their features diversity. Experiments on various types of multi-view datasets show that SDMVC achieves state-of-the-art performance.
