Scalar field theories with $mathbb{Z}_{2}$-symmetry are the traditional playground of critical phenomena. In this work these models are studied using functional renormalization group (FRG) equations at order $partial^2$ of the derivative expansion and, differently from previous approaches, the spike plot technique is employed to find the relative scaling solutions in two and three dimensions. The anomalous dimension of the first few universality classes in $d=2$ is given and the phase structure predicted by conformal field theory is recovered (without the imposition of conformal invariance), while in $d=3$ a refined view of the standard Wilson-Fisher fixed point is found. Our study enlightens the strength of shooting techniques in studying FRG equations, suggesting them as candidates to investigate strongly non-perturbative theories even in more complex cases.

We study the renormalization group flow of $mathbb{Z}_2$-invariant supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric scalar models in the local potential approximation using functional renormalization group methods. We focus our attention to the fixed points of the renormalization group flow of these models, which emerge as scaling solutions. In two dimensions these solutions are interpreted as the minimal (supersymmetric) models of conformal field theory, while in three dimension they are manifestations of the Wilson-Fisher universality class and its supersymmetric counterpart. We also study the analytically continued flow in fractal dimensions between 2 and 4 and determine the critical dimensions for which irrelevant operators become relevant and change the universality class of the scaling solution. We also include novel analytic and numerical investigations of the properties that determine the occurrence of the scaling solutions within the method. For each solution we offer new techniques to compute the spectrum of the deformations and obtain the corresponding critical exponents.
We study the scaling dimension $Delta_{phi^n}$ of the operator $phi^n$ where $phi$ is the fundamental complex field of the $U(1)$ model at the Wilson-Fisher fixed point in $d=4-varepsilon$. Even for a perturbatively small fixed point coupling $lambda_*$, standard perturbation theory breaks down for sufficiently large $lambda_*n$. Treating $lambda_* n$ as fixed for small $lambda_*$ we show that $Delta_{phi^n}$ can be successfully computed through a semiclassical expansion around a non-trivial trajectory, resulting in $$ Delta_{phi^n}=frac{1}{lambda_*}Delta_{-1}(lambda_* n)+Delta_{0}(lambda_* n)+lambda_* Delta_{1}(lambda_* n)+ldots $$ We explicitly compute the first two orders in the expansion, $Delta_{-1}(lambda_* n)$ and $Delta_{0}(lambda_* n)$. The result, when expanded at small $lambda_* n$, perfectly agrees with all available diagrammatic computations. The asymptotic at large $lambda_* n$ reproduces instead the systematic large charge expansion, recently derived in CFT. Comparison with Monte Carlo simulations in $d=3$ is compatible with the obvious limitations of taking $varepsilon=1$, but encouraging.

In this letter, we discuss certain universal predictions of the large charge expansion in conformal field theories with $U(1)$ symmetry, mainly focusing on four-dimensional theories. We show that, while in three dimensions quantum fluctuations are responsible for the existence of a theory-independent $Q^0$ term in the scaling dimension $Delta_Q$ of the lightest operator with fixed charge $Qgg 1$, in four dimensions the same mechanism provides a universal $Q^0log Q$ correction to $Delta_Q$. Previous works discussing four-dimensional theories failed in identifying this term. We also compute the first subleading correction to the OPE coefficient corresponding to the insertion of an arbitrary primary operator with small charge $qll Q$ in between the minimal energy states with charge $Q$ and $Q+q$, both in three and four dimensions. This contribution does not depend on the operator insertion and, similarly to the quantum effects in $Delta_Q$, in four dimensions it scales logarithmically with $Q$.
We confirm the convergence of the derivative expansion in two supersymmetric models via the functional renormalization group method. Using pseudo-spectral methods, high-accuracy results for the lowest energies in supersymmetric quantum mechanics and a detailed description of the supersymmetric analogue of the Wilson-Fisher fixed point of the three-dimensional Wess-Zumino model are obtained. The superscaling relation proposed earlier, relating the relevant critical exponent to the anomalous dimension, is shown to be valid to all orders in the supercovariant derivative expansion and for all $d ge 2$.

We present exact classical solutions of the higher-derivative theory that describes the dynamics of the position modulus of a probe brane within a five-dimensional bulk. The solutions can be interpreted as static or time-dependent throats connecting two parallel branes. In the nonrelativistic limit the brane action is reduced to that of the Galileon theory. We derive exact solutions for the Galileon, which reproduce correctly the shape of the throats at large distances, but fail to do so for their central part. We also determine the parameter range for which the Vainshtein mechanism is reproduced within the brane theory.
