Given a Galois cover of curves X to Y with Galois group G which is totally ramified at a point x and unramified elsewhere, restriction to the punctured formal neighborhood of x induces a Galois extension of Laurent series rings k((u))/k((t)). If we fix a base curve Y , we can ask when a Galois extension of Laurent series rings comes from a global cover of Y in this way. Harbater proved that over a separably closed field, this local-to-global principle holds for any base curve if G is a p-group, and gave a condition for the uniqueness of such an extension. Using a generalization of Artin-Schreier theory to non-abelian p-groups, we characterize the curves Y for which this lifting property holds and when it is unique, but over a more general ground field.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$ and let $X$ the projective line over $k$ with three points removed. We investigate which finite groups $G$ can arise as the monodromy group of finite {e}tale covers of $X$ that are tamely ramified over the three removed points. This provides new information about the tame fundamental group of the projective line. In particular, we show that for each prime $pge 5$, there are families of tamely ramified covers with monodromy the symmetric group $S_n$ or alternating group $A_n$ for infinitely many $n$. These covers come from the moduli spaces of elliptic curves with $PSL_2(mathbb{F}_ell)$-structure, and the analysis uses work of Bourgain, Gamburd, and Sarnak, and adapts work of Meiri and Puder, about Markoff triples modulo $ell$.
We construct a stacky curve of genus $1/2$ (i.e., Euler characteristic $1$) over $mathbb{Z}$ that has an $mathbb{R}$-point and a $mathbb{Z}_p$-point for every prime $p$ but no $mathbb{Z}$-point. This is best possible: we also prove that any stacky curve of genus less than $1/2$ over a ring of $S$-integers of a global field satisfies the local-global principle for integral points.
Let F be a function field in one variable over a p-adic field and D a central division algebra over F of degree n coprime to p. We prove that Suslin invariant detects whether an element in F is a reduced norm. This leads to a local-global principle for reduced norms with respect to all discrete valuations of F.
Given a hyperelliptic curve $C$ of genus $g$ over a number field $K$ and a Weierstrass model $mathscr{C}$ of $C$ over the ring of integers ${mathcal O}_K$ (i.e. the hyperelliptic involution of $C$ extends to $mathscr{C}$ and the quotient is a smooth model of ${mathbb P}^1_K$ over ${mathcal O}_K$), we give necessary and sometimes sufficient conditions for $mathscr{C}$ to be defined by a global Weierstrass equation. In particular, if $C$ has everywhere good reduction, we prove that it is defined by a global Weierstrass equation with invertible discriminant if the class number $h_K$ is prime to $2(2g+1)$, confirming a conjecture of M. Sadek.
We investigate the arithmetic of algebraic curves on coarse moduli spaces for special linear rank two local systems on surfaces with fixed boundary traces. We prove a structure theorem for morphisms from the affine line into the moduli space. We show that the set of integral points on any nondegenerate algebraic curve on the moduli space can be effectively determined.
