Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$ and let $X$ the projective line over $k$ with three points removed. We investigate which finite groups $G$ can arise as the monodromy group of finite {e}tale covers of $X$ that are tamely ramified over the three removed points. This provides new information about the tame fundamental group of the projective line. In particular, we show that for each prime $pge 5$, there are families of tamely ramified covers with monodromy the symmetric group $S_n$ or alternating group $A_n$ for infinitely many $n$. These covers come from the moduli spaces of elliptic curves with $PSL_2(mathbb{F}_ell)$-structure, and the analysis uses work of Bourgain, Gamburd, and Sarnak, and adapts work of Meiri and Puder, about Markoff triples modulo $ell$.

Given a Galois cover of curves X to Y with Galois group G which is totally ramified at a point x and unramified elsewhere, restriction to the punctured formal neighborhood of x induces a Galois extension of Laurent series rings k((u))/k((t)). If we fix a base curve Y , we can ask when a Galois extension of Laurent series rings comes from a global cover of Y in this way. Harbater proved that over a separably closed field, this local-to-global principle holds for any base curve if G is a p-group, and gave a condition for the uniqueness of such an extension. Using a generalization of Artin-Schreier theory to non-abelian p-groups, we characterize the curves Y for which this lifting property holds and when it is unique, but over a more general ground field.
We determine the irreducible components of Igusa varieties for Shimura varieties of Hodge type and use that to determine the irreducible components of central leaves. In particular, we show that the discrete Hecke-orbit conjecture is false in general. Our method combines recent work of DAddezio on monodromy of compatible local systems with a generalisation of a method of Hida, using the Honda-Tate theory for Shimura varieties of Hodge type developed by Kisin-Madapusi Pera-Shin. We also determine the irreducible components of Newton strata in Shimura varieties of Hodge type by combining our results with recent work of Zhou-Zhu.
We classify the irreducible projective representations of symmetric and alternating groups of minimal possible and second minimal possible dimensions, and get a lower bound for the third minimal dimension. On the way we obtain some new results on branching which might be of independent interest.

Let $X$ be a smooth projective connected curve of genus $gge 2$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. Let $G$ be a finite group, $P$ a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ and $N_G(P)$ its normalizer in $G$. We show that if there exists an etale Galois cover $Yto X$ with group $N_G(P)$, then $G$ is the Galois group wan etale Galois cover $mathcal{Y}tomathcal{X}$, where the genus of $mathcal{X}$ depends on the order of $G$, the number of Sylow $p$-subgroups of $G$ and $g$. Suppose that $G$ is an extension of a group $H$ of order prime to $p$ by a $p$-group $P$ and $X$ is defined over a finite field $mathbb{F}_q$ large enough to contain the $|H|$-th roots of unity. We show that integral idempotent relations in the group ring $mathbb{C}[H]$ imply similar relations among the corresponding generalized Hasse-Witt invariants.

In the present article, we define a notion of good height functions on quasi-projective varieties $V$ defined over number fields and prove an equidistribution theorem of small points for such height functions. Those good height functions are defined as limits of height functions associated with semi-positive adelic metrization on big and nef $mathbb{Q}$-line bundles on projective models of $V$ satisfying mild assumptions. Building on a recent work of the author and Vigny as well as on a classical estimate of Call and Silverman, and inspiring from recent works of Kuhne and Yuan and Zhang, we deduce the equidistribution of generic sequence of preperiodic parameters for families of polarized endomorphisms with marked points.
