We have investigated microwave nonreciprocity in a noncentro-symmetric magnet CuB2O4. We simultaneously observed differently originated nonreciprocities; the classical magnetic dipolar effect and the magneto-chiral (MCh) effect. By rotating magnetic field in a tetragonal plane, we clearly unveil qualitative difference between them. The MCh effect signal reveals chiral transitions from one enantiomer to the other via intermediate achiral state. We show magnetoelectric effect plays an essential role for the emergence of microwave MCh effect.

The electrical Hall effect can be significantly enhanced through the interplay of the conduction electrons with magnetism, which is known as the anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Whereas the mechanism related to band topology has been intensively studied towards energy efficient electronics, those related to electron scattering have received limited attention. Here we report the observation of giant AHE of electron-scattering origin in a chiral magnet MnGe thin film. The Hall conductivity and Hall angle respectively reach 40,000 {Omega}-1cm-1 and 18 % in the ferromagnetic region, exceeding the conventional limits of AHE of intrinsic and extrinsic origins, respectively. A possible origin of the large AHE is attributed to a new type of skew-scattering via thermally-excited spin-clusters with scalar spin chirality, which is corroborated by the temperature-magnetic-field profile of the AHE being sensitive to the film-thickness or magneto-crystalline anisotropy. Our results may open up a new platform to explore giant AHE responses in various systems, including frustrated magnets and thin-film heterostructures.
We have investigated the effect of Ge-substitution to the magnetic ordering in the B20 itinerant chiral magnet MnSi prepared by melting and annealing under ambient pressure. From metallurgical survey, the solubility limit of Ge was found to be $x=0.144(5)$ with annealing temperature $T_mathrm{an} = 1073$ K. Magnetization measurements on MnSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$ samples show that the helical ordering temperature $T_{mathrm{c}}$ increases rapidly in the low-$x$ range, whereas it becomes saturated at higher concentration $x>~0.1$. The Ge substitution also increases both the saturation magnetization $M_mathrm{s}$ and the critical field to the fully polarized state $H_mathrm{c2}$. In contrast to the saturation behavior of $T_mathrm{c}$, those parameters increase linearly up to the highest Ge concentration investigated. In the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram, we found enlargement of the skyrmion phase region for large $x$ samples. We, furthermore, observed the non-linear behavior of helical modulation vector $k$ as a function of Ge concentration, which can be described qualitatively using the mean field approximation.

We report the experimental observation of strong electrical magneto-chiral anistropy (eMChA) in trigonal tellurium (t-Te) crystals. We introduce the tensorial character of the effect and determine several tensor elements and we propose a novel intrinsic bandstructure-based mechanism for eMChA which gives a reasonable description of the principal results.
In the cubic chiral magnet Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si a metastable state comprising of topologically nontrivial spin whirls, so-called skyrmions, may be preserved down to low temperatures by means of field cooling the sample. This metastable skyrmion state is energetically separated from the topologically trivial ground state by a considerable potential barrier, a phenomenon also referred to as topological protection. Using magnetic force microscopy on the surface of a bulk crystal, we show that certain positions are preferentially and reproducibly decorated with metastable skyrmions, indicating that surface pinning plays a crucial role. Increasing the magnetic field allows an increasing number of skyrmions to overcome the potential barrier, and hence to transform into the ground state. Most notably, we find that the unwinding of individual skyrmions may be triggered by the magnetic tip itself, however, only when its magnetization is aligned parallel to the external field. This implies that the stray field of the tip is key for locally overcoming the topological protection. Both the control of the position of topologically nontrivial states as well as their creation and annihilation on demand pose important challenges in the context of potential skyrmionic applications.
We report on the linear optical properties of the chiral magnet Cu2OSeO3, specifically associated with the absence of inversion symmetry, the chiral crystallographic structure, and magnetic order. Through spectroscopic ellipsometry, we observe local crystal-field excitations below the charge-transfer gap. These crystal-field excitations are optically allowed due to the lack of inversion symmetry at the Cu sites. Optical polarization rotation measurements were used to study the structural chirality and magnetic order. The temperature dependence of the natural optical rotation, originating in the chiral crystal structure, provides evidence for a finite magneto-electric effect in the helimagnetic phase. We find a large magneto-optical susceptibility on the order of V(540nm)~10^4 rad/(T*m) in the helimagnetic phase and a maximum Faraday rotation of ~165deg/mm in the ferrimagnetic phase. The large value of V can be explained by considering spin cluster formation and the relative ease of domain reorientation in this metamagnetic material. The magneto-optical activity allows us to map the magnetic phase diagram, including the skyrmion lattice phase. In addition to this, we probe and discuss the nature of the various magnetic phase transitions in Cu2OSeO3.
