X-rays are a powerful probe of activity in early stages of star formation. They allow us to identify young stars even after they have lost the IR signatures of circumstellar disks and provide constraints on their distance. Here we report on XMM-Newton observations which detect 121 young stellar objects (YSOs) in two fields between L1641S and $kappa$ Ori. These observations extend the Survey of Orion A with XMM and Spitzer (SOXS). The YSOs are contained in a ring of gas and dust apparent at millimeter wavelengths, and in far-IR and near-IR surveys. The X-ray luminosity function of the young stellar objects detected in the two fields indicates a distance of 250-280 pc, much closer than the Orion A cloud and similar to distance estimates of $kappa$ Ori. We propose that the ring is a 5-8 pc diameter shell that has been swept up by $kappa$ Ori. This ring contains several groups of stars detected by Spitzer and WISE including one surrounding the Herbig Ae/Be stars V1818 Ori. In this interpretation, the $kappa$ Ori ring is one of several shells swept up by massive stars within the Orion Eridanus Superbubble, and is unrelated to the southern portion of Orion A / L1641 S.

We present the results of a 40 ks XMM-Newton observation centered on the variable star V1818 Ori. Using a combination of the XMM-Newton and AllWISE catalog data, we identify a group of about 31 young stellar objects around V1818 Ori. This group is coincident with the eastern edge of the dust ring surrounding Kappa Ori. Previously, we concluded that the young stellar objects on the western side of ring were formed in an episode of star formation that started 3-5 Myr ago, and are at a distance similar to that of kappa Ori (250-280 pc) and in the foreground to the Orion A cloud. Here we use the XMM-Newton observation to calculate X-ray fluxes and luminosities of the young stars around V1818 Ori. We find that their X-ray luminosity function (XLF), calculated for a distance of ~270 pc, matches the XLF of the YSOs west of Kappa Ori. We rule out that this group of young stars is associated to Mon R2 as assumed in the literature, but rather they are part of the same Kappa Oris ring stellar population.
The Cepheus B (CepB) molecular cloud and a portion of the nearby CepOB3b OB association, one of the most active regions of star formation within 1 kpc, have been observed with the IRAC detector on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The goals are to study protoplanetary disk evolution and processes of sequential triggered star formation in the region. Out of ~400 pre-main sequence (PMS) stars selected with an earlier Chandra X-ray Observatory observation, 95% are identified with mid-infrared sources and most of these are classified as diskless or disk-bearing stars. The discovery of the additional >200 IR-excess low-mass members gives a combined Chandra+Spitzer PMS sample complete down to 0.5 Mo outside of the cloud, and somewhat above 1 Mo in the cloud. Analyses of the nearly disk-unbiased combined Chandra+Spitzer selected stellar sample give several results. Our major finding is a spatio-temporal gradient of young stars from the hot molecular core towards the primary ionizing O star HD 217086. This strongly supports the radiation driven implosion (RDI) model of triggered star formation in the region. The empirical estimate for the shock velocity of 1 km/s is very similar to theoretical models of RDI in shocked molecular clouds...ABRIDGED... Other results include: 1. agreement of the disk fractions, their mass dependency, and fractions of transition disks with other clusters; 2. confirmation of the youthfulness of the embedded CepB cluster; 3. confirmation of the effect of suppression of time-integrated X-ray emission in disk-bearing versus diskless systems.

We have studied the environment of the FU Ori type star V582 Aur. Our aim is to explore the star-forming region associated with this young eruptive star. Using slitless spectroscopy we searched for H alpha emission stars within a field of 11.5arcmin times 11.5arcmin, centred on V582 Aur. Based on UKIDSS and Spitzer Space Telescope data we further selected infrared-excess young stellar object candidates. In all, we identified 68 candidate low-mass young stars, 16 of which exhibited H alpha emission in the slitless spectroscopic images. The colour-magnitude diagram of the selected objects, based on IPHAS data, suggests that they are low-mass pre-main-sequence stars associated with the Aur OB 1 association, located at a distance of 1.3 kpc from the Sun. The bright-rimmed globules in the local environment of V582 Aur probably belong to the dark cloud LDN~1516. Our results suggest that star formation in these globules might have been triggered by the radiation field of a few hot members of Aur OB 1. The bolometric luminosity of V582 Aur, based on archival photometric data and on the adopted distance, is 150-320 Lsun.
We present the direct imaging discovery of an extrasolar planet, or possible low-mass brown dwarf, at a projected separation of 55 +/- 2 AU (1.058 +/- 0.007 arcsec) from the B9-type star Kappa And. The planet was detected with Subaru/HiCIAO during the SEEDS survey, and confirmed as a bound companion via common proper motion measurements. Observed near-infrared magnitudes of J = 16.3 +/- 0.3, H = 15.2 +/- 0.2, Ks = 14.6 +/- 0.4, and L = 13.12 +/- 0.09 indicate a temperature of ~1700 K. The galactic kinematics of the host star are consistent with membership in the Columba association, implying a corresponding age of 30 +20 -10 Myr. The system age, combined with the companion photometry, points to a model-dependent companion mass ~12.8 MJup. The host stars estimated mass of 2.4-2.5 Msun places it among the most massive stars ever known to harbor an extrasolar planet or low-mass brown dwarf. While the mass of the companion is close to the deuterium burning limit, its mass ratio, orbital separation, and likely planet-like formation scenario imply that it may be best defined as a `Super-Jupiter with properties similar to other recently discovered companions to massive stars.
CONTEXT: The study of pulsation in Pre--Main--Sequence intermediate-mass stars represents an important tool for deriving information on fundamental stellar parameters and internal structure, as well as for testing current theoretical models. Interest in this class of variable stars has significantly increased during the last decade and about 30 members are presently known in the literature. AIMS: We have constructed the frequency spectrum of the oscillations in V346 Ori. We apply asteroseismic tools to these data to estimate the intrinsic parameters (mass, luminosity, effective temperature) of V346 Ori and to obtain information on its internal structure. METHODS: CCD time series photometry in the Johnson V filter has been obtained for a total of 145.7 h of observations distributed over 36 nights. The resulting light curves have been subjected to a detailed frequency analysis using updated numerical techniques. Photometric and spectroscopic data have also been acquired to determine reliable estimates of the stellar properties. RESULTS: We have identified 13 oscillation frequencies, 6 of which with higher significance. These have been compared with the predictions of non-radial adiabatic models. The resulting best fit model has a mass of 2.1$pm$0.2 $M_{odot}$, luminosity $log{L/L_{odot}}=1.37^{+0.11}_{-0.13}$, and effective temperature 7300$pm$200 K. These values are marginally consistent with the association of V346 Ori to Orion OB1a. Alternatively, V346 Ori could be placed at a slightly larger distance than previously estimated.
