Since the ignition of deuterium is theoretically possible with the Super Marx Generator, rather than deuterium-tritium with a laser where 80% of the energy goes into neutrons, would also mean a breakthrough in fusion research, and therefore would justify the large development costs.

We revisit the assumption that reactors based on deuterium-deuterium (D-D) fusion processes have to be necessarily developed after the successful completion of experiments and demonstrations for deuterium-tritium (D-T) fusion reactors. Two possible mechanisms for enhancing the reactivity are discussed. Hard tails in the energy distribution of the nuclei, through the so-called kappa-distribution, allow to boost the number of energetic nuclei available for fusion reactions. At higher temperatures than usually considered in D-T plasmas, vacuum polarization effects from real $e^+e^-$ and $mu^+mu^-$ pairs may provide further speed-up due to their contribution to screening of the Coulomb barrier. Furthermore, the energy collection system can benefit from the absence of the lithium blanket, both in simplicity and compactness. The usual thermal cycle can be bypassed with comparable efficiency levels using hadronic calorimetry and third-generation photovoltaic cells, possibly allowing to extend the use of fusion reactors to broader contexts, most notably maritime transport.

Heavy ion inertial fusion (HIF) energy would be one of promising energy resources securing our future energy in order to sustain our human life for centuries and beyond. The heavy ion beam (HIB) has remarkable preferable features to release the fusion energy in inertial confinement fusion: in particle accelerators HIBs are generated with a high driver efficiency of ~ 30-40%, and the HIB ions deposit their energy inside of materials. Therefore, a requirement for the fusion target energy gain is relatively low, that would be ~50-70 to operate a HIF fusion reactor with the standard energy output of 1GW of electricity. The HIF reactor operation frequency would be ~10~15 Hz or so. Several-MJ HIBs illuminate a fusion fuel target, and the fuel target is imploded to about a thousand times of the solid density. Then the DT fuel is ignited and burned. The HIB ion deposition range would be ~0.5-1 mm or so depending on the material. Therefore, a relatively large density-scale length appears in the fuel target material. The large density-gradient-scale length helps to reduce the Rayleigh-Taylor (R-T) growth rate. The key merits in HIF physics are presented in the article toward our bright future energy resource.
The radiation symmetry and laser-plasma instabilities (LPIs) inside the conventional cylindrical hohlraum configuration are the two daunting challenges on the approach to ignition in indirectly driven inertial confinement fusion. Recently, near-vacuum cylindrical hohlraum (NVCH), octahedral spherical hohlraum (SH) and novel three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) were proposed to mitigate these issues. While the coupling efficiency might still be a critical risk. In this paper, an advanced three-axis elliptical hohlraum (TAEH) is proposed to make a compromise among these hohlraum performance. Preliminary simulations indicate that the TAEH (with a case-to-capsule ratio, CCR=2.8) could provide excellent radiation symmetry during the thorough laser pulse of the high-foot drive, comparable to the ones inside the SH (CCR=5.1) and TACH (CCR=2.2). The filling time of plasma affecting the LPIs is between those of SH and TACH, and about 1.5 times of that in the ignition hohlraum Rev5-CH of NIC and close to the one inside the NVCH (CCR=3.4). In particular, the coupling efficiency is about 22%, 29% and 17% higher than the one inside the NVCH, SH and TACH, respectively. It would be envisioned that the proposed hohlraum configuration merits consideration as an alternative route to indirect-drive ignition, complementary to the traditional cylindrical hohlraum and the proposed recently novel hohlraums.
After the introduction of the ionization-injection scheme in Laser Wake Field Acceleration and of related high-quality electron beam generation methods as two-color or the Resonant Multi Pulse Ionization injection, the theory of thermal emittance by C. Schroeder et al, has been used to predict the beam normalised emittance obtainable with those schemes. In this manuscript we recast and extend such a theory, including both higher order terms in the polinomial laser field expansion and non polinomial corrections due to the onset of saturation effects in a single cycle. Also, a very accurate model for predicting the cycle-averaged $3D$ momentum distribution of the extracted electrons, including saturation and multi-process events, is proposed and tested. We show that our theory is very accurate for the selected processes of Kr$^{8^+rightarrow10^+}$ and Ar$^{8^+rightarrow10^+}$, resulting in a a maximum error below $1%$ even in deep saturation regime. This highly accurate prediction of the beam phase-space can be implemented e.g., in laser-envelope Particle in Cell (PIC) or hybrid PIC-fluid codes, to correctly mimic the cycle-averaged momentum distribution without the need of resolving the intra-cycle dynamics. Finally, we introduce further spatial averaging with Gaussian longitudinal and transverse laser profiles, obtaining expressions for the whole-beam emittance that fits with Monte Carlo simulations in a saturated regime, too.
