We demonstrate that a method using the derivative of the selective reflection signal from a nanocell is a convenient and robust tool for atomic laser spectroscopy, achieving a nearly Doppler-free spectral resolution. The recorded linewidth of the signal from a potassium-filled cell, whose thickness $ell$ lies in the range $350-500$ nm, is 18 times smaller than the Doppler linewidth ($sim 900$ MHz full width at half maximum) of potassium atoms. We also show experimentally a sign oscillation of the reflected signals derivative with a periodicity of $lambda/2$ when $ell$ varies from 190 to 1200~nm confirming the theoretical prediction. We report the first measurement of the van der Waals atom-surface interaction coefficient $C_3 = 1.9pm 0.3$ kHz$cdotmu$m$^3$ of potassium $4S_{1/2} rightarrow 4P_{3/2}$ transitions with the nanocells sapphire windows, demonstrating the usefulness and convenience of the derivative of selective reflection technique for cell thicknesses in the range $60 -120~$nm.
Controlling thin film formation is technologically challenging. The knowledge of physical properties of the film and of the atoms in the surface vicinity can help improve control over the film growth. We investigate the use of the well-established se
We propose a novel class of atomic clocks based on highly charged ions. We consider highly-forbidden laser-accessible transitions within the $4f^{12}$ ground-state configurations of highly charged ions. Our evaluation of systematic effects demonstrat
We report on the observation of emerging beam resonances, well known as Rayleigh-Wood anomalies and threshold resonances in photon and electron diffraction, respectively, in an atom-optical diffraction experiment. Diffraction of He atom beams reflect
A local positional system (LPS) is proposed, in which particles are launched at given velocities, and a sensor system measures the trajectory of particles in the platform frame. These measurements allow us to restore the position and orientation of t
We present experiments on ensemble cavity quantum electrodynamics with cold potassium atoms in a high-finesse ring cavity. Potassium-39 atoms are cooled in a two-dimensional magneto-optical trap and transferred to a three-dimensional trap which inter
