A local positional system (LPS) is proposed, in which particles are launched at given velocities, and a sensor system measures the trajectory of particles in the platform frame. These measurements allow us to restore the position and orientation of the platform in the frame of the rotating Earth, without solving navigation equations. If there are also velocimeters installed on the platform, then one can restore the velocity and angular rate of the platform rotation in respect to the Earth. Instead of navigational equations, it is necessary to obtain the classical trajectory of a particle in the field of a rotating gravity source. Taking into account the gravity-gradient, Coriolis, and centrifugal forces, the exact expression for this trajectory is derived, which can be widely used in atomic interferometry. A new iterative method for restoring the orientation of the platform without using gyroscopes is proposed. The simulation allowed us to determine the conditions under which the LPS-navigation error per hour is about 10m.

We study ionization of atoms in strong two-dimensional (2D) laser fields with various forms, numerically and analytically. We focus on the local most-probable tunneling routes (some specific electron trajectories) which are corresponding to the local maxima of photoelectron momentum distributions (PMDs). By making classic-quantum correspondence, we obtain a condition for these routes characterized by the electron position at the tunnel exit. With comparing the identified routes with the classical limit and the partial-decoupling approximation where it is assumed that tunneling is dominated by the main component of the 2D field, some semiclassical properties of 2D tunneling are addressed. The local maxima of PMD related to the local most-probable routes can be used as one of the preferred observables in ultrafast measurements.
It is well known that ultranarrow electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonances can be observed in atomic gases at room temperature. We report here the experimental observation of another type of ultranarrow resonances, as narrow as the E IT ones, in a Lambda-system selected by light polarization in metastable 4He at room temperature. It is shown to be due to coherent population oscillations in an open two-level system (TLS). For perpendicular linearly polarized coupling and probe beams, this system can be considered as two coupled open TLSs, in which the ground state populations exhibit anti-phase oscillations. We also predict theoretically that in case of two parallel polarizations, the system would behave like a closed TLS, and the narrow resonance associated with these oscillations would disappear.
We demonstrate that a method using the derivative of the selective reflection signal from a nanocell is a convenient and robust tool for atomic laser spectroscopy, achieving a nearly Doppler-free spectral resolution. The recorded linewidth of the sig nal from a potassium-filled cell, whose thickness $ell$ lies in the range $350-500$ nm, is 18 times smaller than the Doppler linewidth ($sim 900$ MHz full width at half maximum) of potassium atoms. We also show experimentally a sign oscillation of the reflected signals derivative with a periodicity of $lambda/2$ when $ell$ varies from 190 to 1200~nm confirming the theoretical prediction. We report the first measurement of the van der Waals atom-surface interaction coefficient $C_3 = 1.9pm 0.3$ kHz$cdotmu$m$^3$ of potassium $4S_{1/2} rightarrow 4P_{3/2}$ transitions with the nanocells sapphire windows, demonstrating the usefulness and convenience of the derivative of selective reflection technique for cell thicknesses in the range $60 -120~$nm.

Dark matter effects may be attributed to interactions between the Machian strings connecting every pair of elementary particles in the observable Universe. A simple model for the interaction between Machian strings is proposed. In the early Universe, the Machian strings of a density perturbation had a spherically symmetric distribution and the interaction with the Machian strings of a test particle is found to give a multiple of the Newtonian gravitational acceleration. In a strong gravitational field, the interaction between Machian strings tends to a constant limit in order to ensure the absence of dark matter effects in the Solar System. Dark matter effects on a galactic scale may be attributed to a change in the distribution of the Machian strings around a galaxy during the process of galaxy formation. The interaction between the Machian strings of a test mass and the Machian strings of a galaxy is considered in detail and the MOND phenomenology for galaxy rotation curves is obtained.
We have implemented a control system for experiments in atomic, molecular and optical physics based on a commercial low-cost board, featuring a field-programmable gate array as part of a system-on-a-chip on which a Linux operating system is running. The board features Gigabit Ethernet, allowing for fast data transmission and operation of remote experimental systems. A single board can control a set of devices generating digital, analog and radio frequency signals with a precise timing given either by an external or internal clock. Contiguous output and input sampling rates of up to 40 MHz are achievable. Several boards can run synchronously with a timing error approaching 1 ns. For this purpose, a novel auto-synchronization scheme is demonstrated, with possible application in complex distributed experimental setups with demanding timing requests.
