In this work, we use a double-layered stack of TiO2 nanotubes (TiNTs) to construct a visible-light triggered drug delivery system. Key for visible-light drug release is a hydrophobic cap on the nanotubes containing Au nanoparticles (AuNPs). The AuNPs allow for a photocatalytic scission of the hydrophobic chain under visible light. To demonstrate the principle, we loaded antibiotic (ampicillin sodium (AMP)) in the lower part of the TiO2 nanotube stack, triggered visible light induced release, and carried out antibacterial studies. The release from the platform becomes most controllable if the drug is silane-grafted in hydrophilic bottom layer for drug storage. Thus visible-light photocatalysis can also determine the release kinetics of the active drug from the nanotube wall.

In this work, we introduce a facile procedure to graft a thin graphitic C3N4 (g-C3N4) layer on aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiNT) by one-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach. This provides a platform to enhance the visible-light response of TiO2 nanotubes for antimicrobial applications. The formed g- C3N4/TiNT binary nanocomposite exhibits excellent bactericidal efficiency against E. coli as a visiblelight activated antibacterial coating.
Sensing response of individual single-crystal titania nanowires configured as chemiresistors for detecting reducing (CO, H2) and oxidizing (O2) gases is shown to be sensitive to visible light illumination. It is assumed that doping of the TiO2 nanowi res with C and/or N during carbon assisted vapor-solid growth creates extrinsic states in the band gap close to the valence band maximum, which enables photoactivity at the photon energies of visible light. The inherently large surface-to-volume ratio of nanowires, along with facile transport of the photo-generated carriers to/from the nanowires surface promote the adsorption/desorption of donor/acceptor molecules, and therefore open the possibility for visible light assisted gas sensing. The photo-catalytic performance of TiO2 nanowire chemiresistors demonstrates the prospect of combining light harvesting and sensing action in a single nanostructure.
Highly active, durable and cost-effective electrocatalysts for water oxidation to evolve oxygen gas hold a key to a range of renewable energy solutions including water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Here, we report the synthesis of u ltrathin nickel iron layered double hydroxide nanoplates on mildly oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Incorporation of Fe into the nickel hydroxide induced the formation of NiFe-layered double hydroxide. The nanoplates were covalently attached to a network of nanotubes, affording excellent electrical wiring to the nanoplates. The ultra-thin Ni-Fe layered double hydroxide nanoplates/carbon nanotube complex was found to exhibit unusually high electro-catalytic activity and stability for oxygen evolution and outperformed commercial precious metal Ir catalysts.
We examined the reliability of exchange-correlation functionals for molecular encapsulations combined by van der Waals forces, comparing their predictions with those of diffusion Monte Carlo method. We established that functionals with D3 dispersion force correction and including sufficient proportion of exact-exchange in long-ranged interaction can comparatively reliably estimate the binding strength. Our finding agrees with a previous ab initio study on argon dimer. However we found that even such functionals may not be able to distinguish the energy differences among different conformations.
Vertically aligned ZnO nanotube arrays fabricated on an ITO substrate are found to exhibit strong persistent photoconductivity (PPC) effect and electrically driven conductance switching behavior, though the latter shows a gradual decay from high cond uctance state to a low conductance state. Unlike the electrical switching, the PPC cannot be reset or reversed by an electrical pulse. Excitation wavelength dependent conductance measurement indicates the presence of the defect localized states (DLS) ~ 240meV above the valence band edge, in support of the hypothesis that the doubly ionization of these DLS are responsible for the PPC effect.
