Results of thermo-electric power (S) and electrical resistivity (r) measurements are reported on NaxCoO2 compounds with x = 1.0, 0.7 and 0.6. These are single-phase compounds crystallizing in the hexagonal structure (space group P63/mmc) at room temperature. Thermo-electric power values at 300K (S300K) are, 80mV/K, 39mV/K and 37mV/K for x = 1.0, 0.7 and 0.6 samples, respectively. The samples with x=0.7 and 1.0 are metallic down to 5 K, while the x = 0.6 sample is semiconducting. The value of r300K for x = 1.0 sample is ~0.895 mW-cm and the power factor (S2/r) is = 7.04 x 10-3 W/mK2 which qualifies it as a good thermo-electric material. In x =1.0 sample, S(T) is positive throughout 300-5K temperature range and decreases monotonically to zero as temperature T= 0. In contrast, S(T) of x = 0.7 and 0.6 samples changes sign and shows negative values between 90 K and 16 K before approaching zero as T = 0. Anomalous S(T) behavior of x = 0.6 and 0.7 samples, which are coincidentally the precursor materials to the reported superconductivity in this class of materials, indicates a dramatic change in the electronic structure of these compounds on lowering the Na content.

Thermoelectric power, S(T) of the Mg1-xAlxB2 system has been measured for x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0. XRD, resistivity and magnetization measurements are also presented. It has been found that the thermoelectric power is positive for x = 0.4 and is negative for x = 0.6 over the entire temperature range studied up to 300 K. The thermoelectric power of x = 0.4 samples vanishes discontinuously below a certain temperature, implying existence of superconductivity. In general, the magnitude of the thermoelectric power increases with temperature up to a certain temperature, and then it starts to decrease towards zero base line. In order to explain the observed behavior of the thermoelectric power, we have used a model in which both diffusion and phonon drag processes are combined by using a phenomenological interpolation between the low and high temperature behaviors of the thermoelectric power. The considered model provides an excellent fit to the observed data. It is further found that Al doping enhances the Debye temperature.
We show that important anomalous features of the normal-state thermoelectric power S of high-Tc materials can be understood as being caused by doping dependent short-range antiferromagnetic correlations. The theory is based on the fluctuation-exchang e approximation applied to Hubbard model in the framework of the Kubo formalism. Firstly, the characteristic maximum of S as function of temperature can be explained by the anomalous momentum dependence of the single-particle scattering rate. Secondly, we discuss the role of the actual Fermi surface shape for the occurrence of a sign change of S as a function of temperature and doping.

Density functional theory (DFT) within the local density approximation (LDA) is used to understand the electronic properties of Na1/3CoO2 and Na1/3CoO2(H2O)4/3, which was recently found to be superconducting1. Comparing the LDA charge density of CoO2 and the Na doped phases indicates that doping does not simply add electrons to the t2g states. In fact, the electron added in the t2g state is dressed by hole density in the eg state and electron density in the oxygen states via rehybridization. In order to fully understand this phenomenon, a simple extension of the Hubbard Hamiltonian is proposed and solved using the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). This simple model confirms that the rehybridization is driven by a competition between the on-site coulomb interaction and the hybridization. In addition, we find that the presence of eg-oxygen hybridization effectively screens the low energy excitations. To address the role that water plays in creating the superconducting state, we compare the LDA band structure of Na1/3CoO2 and its hydrated counterpart. This demonstrates that hydration does cause the electronic structure to become more two-dimensional.
We have measured the magnetic field (H<90 kOe) and pressure (P<10 kbar) dependence of the magnetic ordering temperature, Tmag, in single crystal samples of NaxCoO2 for a range of Na concentrations (0.60<x<0.72). We show that in zero field, Tmag remai ns constant with decreasing x before magnetic order disappears at x=0.65. Heat capacity and magnetization data show that for x=0.70, Tmag is unchanged in an applied field. In contrast, magnetization data collected under hydrostatic pressure show that Tmag increases from 22.0 K at 1 bar to 25.4 K at 10 kbar. This rise is at odds with the behaviour expected for model spin density wave systems.
UCoGe is one of the few compounds showing the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity at ambient pressure. With T_Curie = 3 K and T_SC = 0.6 K it is near a quantum phase transition; the pressure needed to suppress the magnetism is slightl y higher than 1 GPa. We report simultaneous resistivity and ac-susceptibility measurements under pressure on a polycrystal with very large single-crystalline domains and a resistivity ratio of about 6. Both methods confirm the phase diagram established before by resistivity measurements on a polycrystal. The ferromagnetic phase is suppressed for P approximately 1.2 GPa. Astonishingly, the superconductivity persists at pressures up to at least 2.4 GPa. In other superconducting and ferromagnetic heavy fermion compounds like UGe2 and URhGe, the superconducting state is situated only inside the larger ferromagnetic region. Therefore, UCoGe seems to be the first example where superconductivity extends from the ferromagnetic to the paramagnetic region.
