We theoretically study physical properties of the low-energy quasiparticle excitations at the vortex core in the full-gap superconducting state of the Kondo lattice coupled to compensated metals. Based on the mean-field description of the superconducting state, we numerically solve the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations for the tight-binding Hamiltonian. The isolated vortex is characterized by a length scale independent of the magnitude of the interaction and the energy level of the core bound state is the same order as the bulk gap. These properties are in strong contrast to the conventional s-wave superconductor. To gain further insights, we also consider the effective Hamiltonian in the continuous limit and construct the theoretical framework of the quasiclassical Greens function of conduction electrons. With the use of the Kramer-Pesch approximation, we analytically derive the spectral function describing the quasiparticle excitations which is consistent with the numerics. It has been revealed that the properties of the vortex bound state are closely connected to the characteristic odd frequency dependence of both the normal and anomalous self-energies which is proportional to the inverse of frequency.

Understanding the mechanism and symmetry of electron pairing in iron-based superconductors represents an important challenge in condensed matter physics [1-3]. The observation of magnetic flux lines - vortices - in a superconductor can contribute to this issue, because the spatial variation of magnetic field reflects the pairing. Unlike many other iron pnictides, our KFe2As2 crystals have very weak vortex pinning, allowing small-angle-neutron-scattering (SANS) observations of the intrinsic vortex lattice (VL). We observe nearly isotropic hexagonal packing of vortices, without VL-symmetry transitions up to high fields along the fourfold c-axis of the crystals, indicating rather small anisotropy of the superconducting properties around this axis. This rules out gap nodes parallel to the c-axis, and thus d-wave and also anisotropic s-wave pairing [2, 3]. The strong temperature-dependence of the intensity down to T<<Tc indicates either widely different full gaps on different Fermi surface sheets, or nodal lines perpendicular to the axis.
We present small angle neutron scattering studies of the vortex lattice (VL) in CeCoIn5 with magnetic fields applied parallel (H) to the antinodal [100] and nodal [110] directions. For H || [100], a single VL orientation is observed, while a 90 degre e reorientation transition is found for H || [110]. For both field orientations and VL configurations we find a distorted hexagonal VL with an anisotropy, Gamma = 2.0 +/- 0.05. The VL form factor shows strong Pauli paramagnetic effects similar to what have previously been reported for H || [001]. At high fields, above which the upper critical field (Hc2) becomes a first-order transition, an increased disordering of the VL is observed.
The effect of vortices on quasiparticle transport in cuprate superconductors was investigated by measuring the low temperature thermal conductivity of YBa_2Cu_3O_6.9 in magnetic fields up to 8 T. The residual linear term (as T to 0) is found to incre ase with field, directly reflecting the occupation of extended quasiparticle states. A study for different Zn impurity concentrations reveals a good agreement with recent calculations for a d-wave superconductor, thereby shedding light on the nature of scattering by both impurities and vortices. It also provides a quantitative measure of the gap near the nodes.
We report the observation of discrete vortex bound states with the energy levels deviating from the widely believed ratio of 1:3:5 in the vortices of an iron based superconductor KCa2Fe4As4F2 through scanning tunneling microcopy (STM). Meanwhile Frie del oscillations of vortex bound states are also observed for the first time in related vortices. By doing self-consistent calculations of Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we find that at extreme quantum limit, the superconducting order parameter exhibits a Friedel-like oscillation, which modifies the energy levels of the vortex bound states and explains why it deviates from the ratio of 1:3:5. The observed Friedel oscillations of the bound states can also be roughly interpreted by the theoretical calculations, however some features at high energies could not be explained. We attribute this discrepancy to the high energy bound states with the influence of nearby impurities. Our combined STM measurement and the self-consistent calculations illustrate a generalized feature of the vortex bound states in type-II superconductors.
Vortices in a type-II superconductor form a lattice structure that melts when the thermal displacement of the vortices is an appreciable fraction of the distance between vortices. In an anisotropic high-Tc superconductor, such as YBa2Cu3Oy, the magne tic field value where this melting occurs can be much lower than the mean-field critical field Hc2. We examine this melting transition in YBa2Cu3Oy with oxygen content y from 6.45 to 6.92, and fit the data to a theory of vortex-lattice melting. The quality of the fits indicates that the transition to a resistive state is indeed the vortex lattice melting transition, with the shape of the melting curves being consistent with the known change in penetration depth anisotropy from underdoped to optimally doped YBa2Cu3Oy. From the fits we extract Hc2(T = 0) as a function of hole doping. The unusual doping dependence of Hc2(T =0) points to some form of electronic order competing with superconductivity around 0.12 hole doping.
