Studying the jellium model in the Hartree-Fock approximation, Overhauser has shown that spin density waves (SDW) can lower the energy of the Fermi gas, but it is still unknown if these SDW are actually relevant for the phase diagram. In this paper, we give a more complete description of SDW states. We show that a modification of the Overhauser ansatz explains the behavior of the jellium at high density compatible with previous Hartree-Fock simulations.

We consider the free energy difference restricted to a finite volume for certain pairs of incongruent thermodynamic states (if they exist) in the Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass at nonzero temperature. We prove that the variance of this quantity wi th respect to the couplings grows proportionally to the volume in any dimension greater than or equal to two. As an illustration of potential applications, we use this result to restrict the possible structure of Gibbs states in two dimensions.
We consider a one-dimensional gas of spin-1/2 fermions interacting through $delta$-function repulsive potential of an arbitrary strength. For the case of all fermions but one having spin up, we calculate time-dependent two-point correlation function of the spin-down fermion. This impurity Greens function is represented in the thermodynamic limit as an integral of Fredholm determinants of integrable linear integral operators.
We present a novel combination of quantum Monte Carlo methods and a finite size extrapolation framework with which we calculate the thermodynamic limit of the exact correlation energy of the polarized electron gas at high densities to meV accuracy, $ -40.44(5)$ and $-31.70(4)$ mHa at $r_{rm s}=0.5$ and $1$, respectively. The fixed-node error is characterized and found to exceed $1$ mHa, and we show that the magnitude of the correlation energy of the polarized electron gas is underestimated by up to $6$ meV by the Perdew-Wang parametrization, for which we suggest improvements.
In 1963 a partial differential equation with a convolution non-linearity was introduced in connection with a quantum mechanical many-body problem, namely the gas of bosonic particles. This equation is mathematically interesting for several reasons. ( 1) Although the equation was expected to be valid only for small values of the parameters, further investigation showed that predictions based on the equation agree well over the {it entire range} of parameters with what is expected to be true for the solution of the true many-body problem. (2) The novel nonlinearity is easy to state but seems to have almost no literature up to now. (3) The earlier work did not prove existence and uniqueness of a solution, which we provide here along with properties of the solution such as decay at infinity.
The energy and momentum selectivity of time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is exploited to address the ultrafast dynamics of the antiferromagnetic spin density wave (SDW) transition photoexcited in epitaxial thin films of chromium. We are able to quantitatively extract the evolution of the SDW order parameter $Delta$ through the ultrafast phase transition. $Delta$ is defined by the transient temperature of the thermalized electron gas. The complete destruction of SDW order on a sub-100~fs time scale is observed, much faster than for conventional charge density wave materials. Our results reveal that equilibrium concepts for phase transitions such as the order parameter may be utilized even in the strongly non-adiabatic regime of ultrafast photo-excitation.
