This paper reports on the excitation of surface plasmons on gold-coated nanofibre tips by side-illumination with a laser beam and the coupling of the surface plasmons to the optical fiber. The measurements show a strong dependence of the coupling efficiency on the incidence angle with a maximum coupling efficiency on the order of few percent. Moreover, the fibre tip was used as scanning probe device for measuring the beam waist of a focussed laser beam. This work is motivated by the goal to use such plasmonic nanofibre tips in quantum optics experiments with cold atoms.

Precise control of particle positioning is desirable in many optical propulsion and sorting applications. Here, we develop an integrated platform for particle manipulation consisting of a combined optical nanofibre and optical tweezers system. Indivi dual silica microspheres were introduced to the nanofibre at arbitrary points using the optical tweezers, thereby producing pronounced dips in the fibre transmission. We show that such consistent and reversible transmission modulations depend on both particle and fibre diameter, and can be used as a reference point for in situ nanofibre or particle size measurement. Thence, we combine scanning electron microscope (SEM) size measurements with nanofibre transmission data to provide calibration for particle-based fibre assessment. This integrated optical platform provides a method for selective evanescent field manipulation of micron-sized particles and facilitates studies of optical binding and light-particle interaction dynamics.
Solid-state microcavities combining ultra-small mode volume, wide-range resonance frequency tuning, as well as lossless coupling to a single mode fibre are integral tools for nanophotonics and quantum networks. We developed an integrated system provi ding all of these three indispensable properties. It consists of a nanofibre Bragg cavity (NFBC) with the mode volume of under 1 micro cubic meter and repeatable tuning capability over more than 20 nm at visible wavelengths. In order to demonstrate quantum light-matter interaction, we establish coupling of quantum dots to our tunable NFBC and achieve an emission enhancement by a factor of 2.7.
We describe an efficient near-field to far-field transformation for optical quasinormal modes, which are the dissipative modes of open cavities and plasmonic resonators with complex eigenfrequencies. As an application of the theory, we show how one c an compute the reservoir modes (or regularized quasinormal modes) outside the resonator, which are essential to use in both classical and quantum optics. We subsequently demonstrate how to efficiently compute the quantum optical parameters necessary in the theory of quantized quasinormal modes [Franke et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 213901 (2019)]. To confirm the accuracy of our technique, we directly compare with a Dyson equation approach currently used in the literature (in regimes where this is possible), and demonstrate several order of magnitude improvement for the calculation run times. We also introduce an efficient pole approximation for computing the quantized quasinormal mode parameters, since they require an integration over a range of frequencies. Using this approach, we show how to compute regularized quasinormal modes and quantum optical parameters for a full 3D metal dimer in under one minute on a standard desktop computer. Our technique is exemplified by studying the quasinormal modes of metal dimers and a hybrid structure consisting of a gold dimer on top of a photonic crystal beam. In the latter example, we show how to compute the quantum optical parameters that describe a pronounced Fano resonance, using structural geometries that cannot practically be solved using a Dyson equation approach. All calculations for the spontaneous emission rates are confirmed with full-dipole calculations in Maxwells equations and are shown to be in excellent agreement.
Chiral nanophotonic devices are promising candidates for chiral molecules sensing, polarization diverse nanophotonics and display technologies. Active chiral nanophotonic devices, where the optical chirality can be controlled by an external stimulus has triggered great research interest. However, efficient modulation of the optical chirality has been challenging. Here, we demonstrate switching of the extrinsic chirality by applied magnetic fields in a magneto-plasmonic metasurface device based on a magneto-optical oxide material, Ce1Y2Fe5O12 (Ce:YIG). Thanks to the low optical loss and strong magneto-optical effect of Ce:YIG, we experimentally demonstrated a giant and continuous far-field circular dichroism (CD) modulation by applied magnetic fields from -0.65{deg} to +1.9{deg} at 950 nm wavelength under glancing incident conditions. The far field CD modulation is due to both magneto-optical circular dichroism and near-field modulation of the superchiral fields by applied magnetic fields. Finally, we demonstrate magnetic field tunable chiral imaging in millimeter-scale magneto-plasmonic metasurfaces fabricated using self-assembly. Our results provide a new way for achieving planar integrated, large-scale and active chiral metasurfaces for polarization diverse nanophotonics.
Highly efficient coupling of photons from nanoemitters into single-mode optical fibers is demonstrated using tapered fibers. 7.4 +/- 1.2 % of the total emitted photons from single CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals were coupled into a 300-nm-diameter tapered fibe r. The dependence of the coupling efficiency on the taper diameter was investigated and the coupling efficiency was found to increase exponentially with decreasing diameter. This method is very promising for nanoparticle sensing and single-photon sources.
