We demonstrate evidence of coherent magnetic flux tunneling through superconducting nanowires patterned in a thin highly disordered NbN film. The phenomenon is revealed as a superposition of flux states in a fully metallic superconducting loop with the nanowire acting as an effective tunnel barrier for the magnetic flux, and reproducibly observed in different wires. The flux superposition achieved in the fully metallic NbN rings proves the universality of the phenomenon previously reported for InOx. We perform microwave spectroscopy and study the tunneling amplitude as a function of the wire width, compare the experimental results with theories, and estimate the parameters for existing theoretical models.

Macroscopic resonant tunneling between the two lowest lying states of a bistable RF-SQUID is used to characterize noise in a flux qubit. Measurements of the incoherent decay rate as a function of flux bias revealed a Gaussian shaped profile that is n ot peaked at the resonance point, but is shifted to a bias at which the initial well is higher than the target well. The r.m.s. amplitude of the noise, which is proportional to the decoherence rate 1/T_2^*, was observed to be weakly dependent on temperature below 70 mK. Analysis of these results indicates that the dominant source of low frequency (1/f) flux noise in this device is a quantum mechanical environment in thermal equilibrium.
We suggest a system in which the amplitude of macroscopic flux tunneling can be modulated via the Aharonov-Casher effect. The system is an rf-SQUID with the Josephson junction replaced by a Bloch transistor -- two junctions separated by a small super conducting island on which the charge can be induced by an external gate voltage. When the Josephson coupling energies of the junctions are equal and the induced charge is q=e, destructive interference between tunneling paths brings the flux tunneling rate to zero. The device may also be useful as a qubit for quantum computation.

We investigate theoretically the simultaneous tunneling of two electrons from a superconductor into a normal metal at low temperatures and voltages. Such an emission process is shown to be equivalent to the Andreev reflection of an incident hole. We obtain a local tunneling Hamiltonian that permits to investigate transport through interfaces of arbitrary geometry and potential barrier shapes. We prove that the bilinear momentum dependence of the low-energy tunneling matrix element translates into a real space Hamiltonian involving the normal derivatives of the electron fields in each electrode. The angular distribution of the electron current as it is emitted into the normal metal is analyzed for various experimental setups. We show that, in a full three-dimensional problem, the neglect of the momentum dependence of tunneling causes a violation of unitarity and leads to the wrong thermodynamic (broad interface) limit. More importantly for current research on quantum information devices, in the case of an interface made of two narrow tunneling contacts separated by a distance $r$, the assumption of momentum-independent hopping yields a nonlocally entangled electron current that decays with a prefactor proportional to $r^{-2}$ instead of the correct $r^{-4}$.
The quantum state of a flux qubit was successfully pulse-controlled by using a resonant microwave. We observed Ramsey fringes by applying a pair of phase-shifted pi/2 microwave pulses without introducing detuning. With this method, the qubit state ca n be rotated on an arbitrary axis in the x-y plane of the Bloch sphere in a rotating frame. We obtained a qubit signal from a coherent oscillation with an angular velocity of up to 2pi*11.4 Grad/s. In combination with Rabi pulses, this method enables us to achieve full control of single qubit operation. It also offers the possibility of orders of magnitude increases in the speed of the arbitrary unitary gate operation.
