This (withdrawn) creative essay intended to consider the appearance of times arrow in a fully symmetric universe compatible with pilot wave or transactional interpretations (D. Bohm or J.G. Kramer, respectively). The (unstated) hypothesis was that, despite unitary time evolution, the inherent Hilbert transform operator found in the energy operator of the Schrodinger equation and in commutation relations of Fourier observables indicates dissipation and seemingly, entropy increase.

The tremendous popular success of Chaos Theory shares some common points with the not less fortunate Relativity: they both rely on a misunderstanding. Indeed, ironically , the scientific meaning of these terms for mathematicians and physicists is qui te opposite to the one most people have in mind and are attracted by. One may suspect that part of the psychological roots of this seductive appeal relies in the fact that with these ambiguous names, together with some superficial clich{e}s or slogans immediately related to them (the butterfly effect or everything is relative), some have the more or less secret hope to find matter that would undermine two pillars of science, namely its ability to predict and to bring out a universal objectivity. Here I propose to focus on Chaos Theory and illustrate on several examples how, very much like Relativity, it strengthens the position it seems to contend with at first sight: the failure of predictability can be overcome and leads to precise, stable and even more universal predictions.

A new method to track the motion of a single particle in the field of a high-finesse optical resonator is described. It exploits near-degenerate higher-order Gaussian cavity modes, whose symmetry is broken by the phase shift on the light induced by t he particle. Observation of the spatial intensity distribution behind the cavity allows direct determination of the particles position with approximately wavelength accuracy. This is demonstrated by generating a realistic atomic trajectory using a semiclassical simulation including friction and diffusion and comparing it to the reconstructed path. The path reconstruction itself requires no knowledge about the forces on the particle.

This is a chapter for an upcoming book, Space, Time, and the Limits of Human Understanding, edited by Shyam Wuppuluri and Giancarlo Ghirardi. I first present the classical picture of flat space and ever-flowing time, as generally accepted until about 1900, discuss the challenges posed by modern physics and the adjustments required by special relativity, general relativity and quantum mechanics, and finally consider (and reject) a recent hypothesis that space-time is essentially discrete. Ultimately, none of the simple answers to what is space-time? stand up to reality. We have more work ahead of us!
We present an overview of the art project Aganta Kairos (To Fish the Metaphysical Time). This project celebrates the neutrino, the ghost particle, which scientists consider a cosmic messenger and the artist regards as a link between people who care a bout their relationship to the cosmos and question their origins. The artwork is based on a performance of celebration and seeks to build a human community that encompasses different knowledge domains and interpretations of the universe. This intersection of knowledge is realized during the performance of placing a plaque, held with witnesses, and during subsequent exhibitions. Images, sounds, videos, and sculpture testify to the diversity of approaches to questioning our origins, ranging from traditional western science to ancient shamanism. The sites were selected for their global coverage and, for the South Pole, Mediterranean, and Lake Baikal, their connection to ongoing neutrino experiments. In December 2020, a plaque was installed at the South Pole IceCube Laboratory, the seventh and final site. We provide examples of images and links to additional images and videos.
The evolution of the fireball resulting from the August 2020 Beirut explosion is traced using amateur footage taken during the first $sim$ 230 $ms$ after the detonation. 38 frames separated by $sim$ 16.66 - 33.33 $ms$ are extracted from 6 different v ideos located precisely on the map. Measurements of the time evolution of the radius $R_{t}$ of the shock wave are traced by the fireball at consecutive time sequence $t$. Pixel scales for the videos are calibrated by de-projecting the existing grains silos building for which accurate drawings are available and by defining the line of sight incident angles. The energy available to drive the shock wave at early times can be calculated through $E = 10^{2b} K rho_{o}$ where $b$ is a fitted parameter dependant on the relation between $R_t$ and $t$. $K$ is a constant depending on the ratio of specific heats of the atmosphere and $rho_0$ is the undisturbed gas density. A total energy yield of $E approx 1.3times 10^{12}$ Joules with a lower bound of $9.8times 10^{11}$ and an upper bound of $sim 1.7times 10^{12}$ or the equivalent of $sim 310_{235}^{405}$ tons of T.N.T. is found. Our energy yields are different from other published studies using the same method. This can present an argument that if the compound that exploded is fuel rich ammonium nitrate (ANFO), then the actual mass that detonated is less than officially claimed.
