Piezoelectricity is inherent only in noncentrosymmetric materials, but a piezoelectric response can also be obtained in centrosymmetric crystals if subjected to inhomogeneous deformation. This phenomenon, known as flexoelectricity, affects the functional properties of insulators, particularly thin films of high permittivity materials. We have measured strain-gradient-induced polarization in single crystals of paraelectric SrTiO$_3$ as a function of temperature and orientation down to and below the 105 K phase transition. Estimates were obtained for all the components of the flexoelectric tensor, and calculations based on these indicate that local polarization around defects in SrTiO$_3$ may exceed the largest ferroelectric polarizations. A sign reversal of the flexoelectric response detected below the phase transition suggests that the ferroelastic domain walls of SrTiO$_3$ may be polar.

Youngs modulus determines the mechanical loads required to elastically stretch a material, and also, the loads required to bend it, given that bending stretches one surface while compressing the opposite one. Flexoelectric materials have the addition al property of becoming electrically polarized when bent. While numerous studies have characterized this flexoelectric coupling, its impact on the mechanical response, due to the energy cost of polarization upon bending, is largely unexplored. This intriguing contribution of strain gradient elasticity is expected to become visible at small length scales where strain gradients are geometrically enhanced, especially in high permittivity insulators. Here we present nano-mechanical measurements of freely suspended SrTiO3 membrane drumheads. We observe a striking non-monotonic thickness dependence of Youngs modulus upon small deflections. Furthermore, the modulus inferred from a predominantly bending deformation is three times larger than that of a predominantly stretching deformation for membranes thinner than 20 nm. In this regime we extract a giant strain gradient elastic coupling of ~2.2e-6 N, which could be used in new operational regimes of nano-electro-mechanics.

A precisely selected elastic strain can be introduced in submicron-thick single-crystal SrTiO3 sheets using a silicon nitride stressor layer. A conformal stressor layer deposited using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition produces an elastic str ain in the sheet consistent with the magnitude of the nitride residual stress. Synchrotron x-ray nanodiffraction reveals that the strain introduced in the SrTiO3 sheets is on the order of 10 4, matching the predictions of an elastic model. This approach to elastic strain sharing in complex oxides allows the strain to be selected within a wide and continuous range of values, an effect not achievable in heteroepitaxy on rigid substrates.

The search for oxide-based room-temperature ferromagnetism has been one of the holy grails in condensed matter physics. Room-temperature ferromagnetism observed in Nb-doped SrTiO3 single crystals is reported in this Rapid Communication. The ferromagn etism can be eliminated by air annealing (making the samples predominantly diamagnetic) and can be recovered by subsequent vacuum annealing. The temperature dependence of magnetic moment resembles the temperature dependence of carrier density, indicating that the magnetism is closely related to the free carriers. Our results suggest that the ferromagnetism is induced by oxygen vacancies. In addition, hysteretic magnetoresistance was observed for magnetic field parallel to current, indicating that the magnetic moments are in the plane of the samples. The x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, the static time-of-flight and the dynamic secondary ion mass spectroscopy and proton induced x-ray emission measurements were performed to examine magnetic impurities, showing that the observed ferromagnetism is unlikely due to any magnetic contaminant.
Temperature dependent structural phase transitions of SrRuO3 thin films epitaxially grown on SrTiO3(001) single crystal substrates have been studied using high-resolution x-ray diffraction. In contrast to bulk SrRuO3, coherently strained epitaxial la yers do not display cubic symmetry up to ~730 oC and remain tetragonal. Such behavior is believed to be induced by compressive strain between the SrRuO3 layer and SrTiO3 substrate due to lattice mismatch. The tetragonal symmetry during growth explains the single domain growth on miscut SrTiO3 substrates with step edges running along the [100] or [010] direction.
We report electric polarization and magnetization measurements in single crystals of double perovskite Lu2MnCoO6 using pulsed magnetic fields and optical second harmonic generation (SHG) in DC magnetic fields. we observe well-resolved magnetic field- induced changes in the electric polarization in single crystals and thereby resolve the question about whether multiferroic behavior is intrinsic to these materials or an extrinsic feature of polycrystals. We find electric polarization along the crystalline b-axis, that is suppressed by applying a magnetic fields along c-axis and advance a model for the origin of magnetoelectric coupling. We furthermore map the phase diagram using both capacitance and electric polarization to identify regions of ordering and regions of magnetoelectric hysteresis. This compound is a rare example of coupled hysteretic behavior in the magnetic and electric properties. The ferromagnetic-like magnetic hysteresis loop that couples to hysteretic polarization can be attributed not to ordinary ferromagnetic domains, but to the rich physics of magnetic frustration of Ising-like spins in the axial next-nearest neighbor interaction model.
