We present Coulomb Blockade measurements of two few-electron quantum dots in series which are configured such that the electrochemical potential of one of the two dots is aligned with spin-selective leads. The charge transfer through the system requires co-tunneling through the second dot which is $not$ in resonance with the leads. The observed amplitude modulation of the resulting current is found to reflect spin blockade events occurring through either of the two dots. We also confirm that charge redistribution events occurring in the off-resonance dot are detected indirectly via changes in the electrochemical potential of the aligned dot.

We have studied the temperature dependent thermopower of gate-defined, lateral quantum dots in the Coulomb blockade regime using an electron heating technique. The line shape of the thermopower oscillations depends strongly on the contributing tunnel ing processes. Between 1.5 K and 40 mK a crossover from a pure sawtooth- to an intermitted sawtooth-like line shape is observed. The latter is attributed to the increasing dominance of cotunneling processes in the Coulomb blockade regime at low temperatures.

We prepare a triple quantum dot with a separate contact lead to each dot to study Pauli spin blockade in the tunnel-coupled three dots in a row. We measure the tunneling current flowing between the center dot and either the left or right dot with the left and right leads as a common source and the center lead as a drain. In the biased stability diagram, we establish Pauli spin blockade in the respective neighboring dots, with features similarly obtained in double quantum dot systems. We further realize Pauli spin blockade with two different conditions by tuning the inter-dot coupling gates: strong and weak inter-dot tunnel coupling regimes. In the strong-coupling regime we observe significant suppression of co-tunneling through the respective double dots due to Pauli spin blockade. We reveal the influence from the third dot in the triple dot device on this co-tunneling Pauli spin blockade and clarify that the co-tunneling Pauli spin blockade is lifted by the resonant coupling of excited states to the third dot level as well as spin exchange of the left and right dots with the adjacent reservoir.

We investigate the spin of the ground state of a geometrically confined many-electron system. For atoms, shell structure simplifies this problem-- the spin is prescribed by the well-known Hunds rule. In contrast, quantum dots provide a controllable s etting for studying the interplay of quantum interference and electron-electron interactions in general cases. In a generic confining potential, the shell-structure argument suggests a singlet ground state for an even number of electrons. The interaction among the electrons produces, however, accidental occurrences of spin-triplet ground states, even for weak interaction, a limit which we analyze explicitly. Variaton of an external parameter causes sudden switching between these states and hence a kink in the conductance. Experimental study of these kinks would yield the exchange energy for the ``chaotic electron gas.
We present transport measurements on a lateral double dot produced by combining local anodic oxidation and electron beam lithography. We investigate the tunability of our device and demonstrate, that we can switch between capacitive and tunnel coupli ng. In the regime of capacitive coupling we observe the phenomenon of spin blockade in a magnetic field and analyze the influence of capacitive interdot coupling on this effect.
We investigate Coulomb blockade thermometers (CBT) in an intermediate temperature regime, where measurements with enhanced accuracy are possible due to the increased magnitude of the differential conductance dip. Previous theoretical results show tha t corrections to the half width and to the depth of the measured conductance dip of a sensor are needed, when leaving the regime of weak Coulomb blockade towards lower temperatures. In the present work, we demonstrate experimentally that the temperature range of a CBT sensor can be extended by employing these corrections without compromising the primary nature or the accuracy of the thermometer.
