The quantum critical behavior of the Ising glass in a magnetic field is investigated. We focus on the spin glass to paramagnet transition of the transverse degrees of freedom in the presence of finite longitudinal field. We use two complementary techniques, the Landau theory close to the T=0 transition and the exact diagonalization method for finite systems. This allows us to estimate the size of the critical region and characterize various crossover regimes. An unexpectedly small energy scale on the disordered side of the critical line is found, and its possible relevance to experiments on metallic glasses is briefly discussed.

Studies of low-frequency resistance noise show that the glassy freezing of the two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in Si in the vicinity of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) persists in parallel magnetic fields B of up to 9 T. At low B, both th e glass transition density $n_g$ and $n_c$, the critical density for the MIT, increase with B such that the width of the metallic glass phase ($n_c<n_s<n_g$) increases with B. At higher B, where the 2DES is spin polarized, $n_c$ and $n_g$ no longer depend on B. Our results demonstrate that charge, as opposed to spin, degrees of freedom are responsible for glassy ordering of the 2DES near the MIT.

In the 1970s a new paradigm was introduced that interacting quenched systems, such as a spin-glass, have a phase transition in which long time memory of spatial patterns is realized without spatial correlations. The principal methods to study the spi n-glass transition, besides some elaborate and elegant theoretical constructions, have been numerical computer simulations and neutron spin echo measurements . We show here that the dynamical correlations of the spin-glass transition are embedded in measurements of the four-spin correlations at very long times. This information is directly available in the temporal correlations of the intensity, which encode the spin-orientation memory, obtained by the technique of resonant magnetic x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (RM- XPCS). We have implemented this method to observe and accurately characterize the critical slowing down of the spin orientation fluctuations in the classic metallic spin glass alloy Cu(Mn) over time scales of 1 to 1000 secs. Our method opens the way for studying phase transitions in systems such as spin ices, and quantum spin liquids, as well as the structural glass transition.
We investigate the inverse freezing in the fermionic Ising spin-glass (FISG) model in a transverse field $Gamma$. The grand canonical potential is calculated in the static approximation, replica symmetry and one-step replica symmetry breaking Parisi scheme. It is argued that the average occupation per site $n$ is strongly affected by $Gamma$. As consequence, the boundary phase is modified and, therefore, the reentrance associated with the inverse freezing is modified too.
As in the preceding paper we aim at identifying the effective theory that describes the fluctuations of the local overlap with an equilibrium reference configuration close to a putative thermodynamic glass transition. We focus here on the case of fin ite-dimensional glass-forming systems, in particular supercooled liquids. The main difficulty for going beyond the mean-field treatment comes from the presence of diverging point-to-set spatial correlations. We introduce a variational low-temperature approximation scheme that allows us to account, at least in part, for the effect of these correlations. The outcome is an effective theory for the overlap fluctuations in terms of a random-field + random-bond Ising model with additional, power-law decaying, pair and multi-body interactions generated by the point-to-set correlations. This theory is much more tractable than the original problem. We check the robustness of the approximation scheme by applying it to a fully connected model already studied in the companion paper. We discuss the physical implications of this mapping for glass-forming liquids and the possibility it offers to determine the presence or not of a finite-temperature thermodynamic glass transition.

We report magnetic properties in the random spinel magnet CoGa2O4. Rietveld analysis of the x-ray diffraction profile for CoGa2O4 reveals that the Co and Ga ions are distributed randomly in the tetrahedral A-sites and octahedral B-sites in the cubic spinel structure. CoGa2O4 exhibits a spin-glass transition at TSG = 8.2 K that is confirmed by measurements of the dc- and ac-susceptibilities and thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) that develops below TSG. From the frequency dependence of the freezing temperature Tf for CoGa2O4, it is indicated that the relaxation time follows a Vogel-Fulcher law. Magnetic entropy is considerably reduced, probably because magnetic cluster formation developed even at T > TSG. The relaxation rate of TRM is considerably enhanced at TSG and decays rapidly above and below TSG. The time course of TRM is reproduced by non-exponential relaxation forms, such as a stretched exponential (Kohlrausch) as well as Ogielski and Weron relaxation forms. This behavior is displayed universally in glass systems, and the characteristic parameters associated with these functions were reasonable.
