Automatic Speech Scoring (ASS) is the computer-assisted evaluation of a candidates speaking proficiency in a language. ASS systems face many challenges like open grammar, variable pronunciations, and unstructured or semi-structured content. Recent deep learning approaches have shown some promise in this domain. However, most of these approaches focus on extracting features from a single audio, making them suffer from the lack of speaker-specific context required to model such a complex task. We propose a novel deep learning technique for non-native ASS, called speaker-conditioned hierarchical modeling. In our technique, we take advantage of the fact that oral proficiency tests rate multiple responses for a candidate. We extract context vectors from these responses and feed them as additional speaker-specific context to our network to score a particular response. We compare our technique with strong baselines and find that such modeling improves the models average performance by 6.92% (maximum = 12.86%, minimum = 4.51%). We further show both quantitative and qualitative insights into the importance of this additional context in solving the problem of ASS.

Transformer-based text to speech (TTS) model (e.g., Transformer TTS~cite{li2019neural}, FastSpeech~cite{ren2019fastspeech}) has shown the advantages of training and inference efficiency over RNN-based model (e.g., Tacotron~cite{shen2018natural}) due to its parallel computation in training and/or inference. However, the parallel computation increases the difficulty while learning the alignment between text and speech in Transformer, which is further magnified in the multi-speaker scenario with noisy data and diverse speakers, and hinders the applicability of Transformer for multi-speaker TTS. In this paper, we develop a robust and high-quality multi-speaker Transformer TTS system called MultiSpeech, with several specially designed components/techniques to improve text-to-speech alignment: 1) a diagonal constraint on the weight matrix of encoder-decoder attention in both training and inference; 2) layer normalization on phoneme embedding in encoder to better preserve position information; 3) a bottleneck in decoder pre-net to prevent copy between consecutive speech frames. Experiments on VCTK and LibriTTS multi-speaker datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of MultiSpeech: 1) it synthesizes more robust and better quality multi-speaker voice than naive Transformer based TTS; 2) with a MutiSpeech model as the teacher, we obtain a strong multi-speaker FastSpeech model with almost zero quality degradation while enjoying extremely fast inference speed.
Deep neural networks can learn complex and abstract representations, that are progressively obtained by combining simpler ones. A recent trend in speech and speaker recognition consists in discovering these representations starting from raw audio sam ples directly. Differently from standard hand-crafted features such as MFCCs or FBANK, the raw waveform can potentially help neural networks discover better and more customized representations. The high-dimensional raw inputs, however, can make training significantly more challenging. This paper summarizes our recent efforts to develop a neural architecture that efficiently processes speech from audio waveforms. In particular, we propose SincNet, a novel Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) that encourages the first layer to discover meaningful filters by exploiting parametrized sinc functions. In contrast to standard CNNs, which learn all the elements of each filter, only low and high cutoff frequencies of band-pass filters are directly learned from data. This inductive bias offers a very compact way to derive a customized front-end, that only depends on some parameters with a clear physical meaning. Our experiments, conducted on both speaker and speech recognition, show that the proposed architecture converges faster, performs better, and is more computationally efficient than standard CNNs.
With rapid progress in neural text-to-speech (TTS) models, personalized speech generation is now in high demand for many applications. For practical applicability, a TTS model should generate high-quality speech with only a few audio samples from the given speaker, that are also short in length. However, existing methods either require to fine-tune the model or achieve low adaptation quality without fine-tuning. In this work, we propose StyleSpeech, a new TTS model which not only synthesizes high-quality speech but also effectively adapts to new speakers. Specifically, we propose Style-Adaptive Layer Normalization (SALN) which aligns gain and bias of the text input according to the style extracted from a reference speech audio. With SALN, our model effectively synthesizes speech in the style of the target speaker even from single speech audio. Furthermore, to enhance StyleSpeechs adaptation to speech from new speakers, we extend it to Meta-StyleSpeech by introducing two discriminators trained with style prototypes, and performing episodic training. The experimental results show that our models generate high-quality speech which accurately follows the speakers voice with single short-duration (1-3 sec) speech audio, significantly outperforming baselines.
We propose an end-to-end speaker-attributed automatic speech recognition model that unifies speaker counting, speech recognition, and speaker identification on monaural overlapped speech. Our model is built on serialized output training (SOT) with at tention-based encoder-decoder, a recently proposed method for recognizing overlapped speech comprising an arbitrary number of speakers. We extend SOT by introducing a speaker inventory as an auxiliary input to produce speaker labels as well as multi-speaker transcriptions. All model parameters are optimized by speaker-attributed maximum mutual information criterion, which represents a joint probability for overlapped speech recognition and speaker identification. Experiments on LibriSpeech corpus show that our proposed method achieves significantly better speaker-attributed word error rate than the baseline that separately performs overlapped speech recognition and speaker identification.
Recently, end-to-end multi-speaker text-to-speech (TTS) systems gain success in the situation where a lot of high-quality speech plus their corresponding transcriptions are available. However, laborious paired data collection processes prevent many i nstitutes from building multi-speaker TTS systems of great performance. In this work, we propose a semi-supervised learning approach for multi-speaker TTS. A multi-speaker TTS model can learn from the untranscribed audio via the proposed encoder-decoder framework with discrete speech representation. The experiment results demonstrate that with only an hour of paired speech data, no matter the paired data is from multiple speakers or a single speaker, the proposed model can generate intelligible speech in different voices. We found the model can benefit from the proposed semi-supervised learning approach even when part of the unpaired speech data is noisy. In addition, our analysis reveals that different speaker characteristics of the paired data have an impact on the effectiveness of semi-supervised TTS.
