Filtration of feed containing multiple species of particles is a common process in the industrial setting. In this work we propose a model for filtration of a suspension containing an arbitrary number of particle species, each with different affinities for the filter membrane. We formulate a number of optimization problems pertaining to effective separation of desired and undesired particles in the special case of two particle species and we present results showing how properties such as feed composition affect the optimal filter design (internal pore structure). In addition, we propose a novel multi-stage filtration strategy, which provides a significant mass yield improvement for the desired particles, and, surprisingly, higher purity of the product as well.

Gradient-free optimization methods, such as surrogate based optimization (SBO) methods, and genetic (GAs), or evolutionary (EAs) algorithms have gained popularity in the field of constrained optimization of expensive black-box functions. However, con straint-handling methods, by both classes of solvers, do not usually guarantee strictly feasible candidates during optimization. This can become an issue in applied engineering problems where design variables must remain feasible for simulations to not fail. We propose a constraint-handling method for computationally inexpensive constraint functions which guarantees strictly feasible candidates when using a surrogate-based optimizer. We compare our method to other SBO, GA/EA and gradient-based algorithms on two (relatively simple and relatively hard) analytical test functions, and an applied fully-resolved Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) problem concerned with optimization of an undulatory swimming of a fish-like body, and show that the proposed algorithm shows favorable results while guaranteeing feasible candidates.
This paper exposes a novel exploratory formalism, which end goal is the numerical simulation of the dynamics of a cloud of particles weakly or strongly coupled with a turbulent fluid. Giventhe large panel of expertise of the list of authors, the cont ent of this paper scans a wide range of connexnotions, from the physics of turbulence to the rigorous definition of stochastic processes. Our approachis to develop reduced-order models for the dynamics of both carrying and carried phases which remainconsistant within this formalism, and to set up a numerical process to validate these models. Thenovelties of this paper lie in the gathering of a large panel of mathematical and physical definitionsand results within a common framework and an agreed vocabulary (sections 1 and 2), and in somepreliminary results and achievements within this context, section 3. While the first three sections havebeen simplified to the context of a gas field providing that the disperse phase only retrieves energythrough drag, the fourth section opens this study to the more complex situation when the dispersephase interacts with the continuous phase as well, in an energy conservative manner. This will allowus to expose the perspectives of the project and to conclude.
In the limit of zero Reynolds number (Re), swimmers propel themselves exploiting a series of non-reciprocal body motions. For an artificial swimmer, a proper selection of the power source is required to drive its motion, in cooperation with its geome tric and mechanical properties. Although various external fields (magnetic, acoustic, optical, etc.) have been introduced, electric fields are rarely utilized to actuate such swimmers experimentally in unbounded space. Here we use uniform and static electric fields to demonstrate locomotion of a bi-flagellated sphere at low Re via Quincke rotation. These Quincke swimmers exhibit three different forms of motion, including a self-oscillatory state due to elasto-electro-hydrodynamic interactions. Each form of motion follows a distinct trajectory in space. Our experiments and numerical results demonstrate a new method to generate, and potentially control, the locomotion of artificial flagellated swimmers.
The ordering of particles in the drying process of a colloidal suspension is crucial in determining the properties of the resulting film. For example, microscopic inhomogeneities can lead to the formation of cracks and defects that can deteriorate th e quality of the film considerably. This type of problem is inherently multiscale and here we study it numerically, using our recently developed method for the simulation of soft polymeric capsules in multicomponent fluids. We focus on the effect of the particle softness on the film microstructure during the drying phase and how it relates to the formation of defects. We quantify the order of the particles by measuring both the Voronoi entropy and the isotropic order parameter. Surprisingly, both observables exhibit a non-monotonic behaviour when the softness of the particles is increased. We further investigate the correlation between the interparticle interaction and the change in the microstructure during the evaporation phase. We observe that the rigid particles form chain-like structures that tend to scatter into small clusters when the particle softness is increased.
Terrestrial experiments on active particles, such as Volvox, involve gravitational forces, torques and accompanying monopolar fluid flows. Taking these into account, we analyse the dynamics of a pair of self-propelling, self-spinning active particles between widely separated parallel planes. Neglecting flow reflected by the planes, the dynamics of orientation and horizontal separation is symplectic, with a Hamiltonian exactly determining limit cycle oscillations. Near the bottom plane, gravitational torque damps and reflected flow excites this oscillator, sustaining a second limit cycle that can be perturbatively related to the first. Our work provides a theory for dancing Volvox and highlights the importance of monopolar flow in active matter.
