Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) has recently appeared as a powerful and robust multiple access and interference management strategy for downlink Multi-user (MU) multi-antenna communications. In this work, we study the precoder design problem for RSMA scheme in downlink MU systems with both perfect and imperfect Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) and assess the role and benefits of transmitting multiple common streams. Unlike existing works which have considered single-antenna receivers (Multiple-Input Single-Output--MISO), we propose and extend the RSMA framework for multi-antenna receivers (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output--MIMO) and formulate the precoder optimization problem with the aim of maximizing the Weighted Ergodic Sum-Rate (WESR). Precoder optimization is solved using Sample Average Approximation (SAA) together with the proposed vectorization and Weighted Minimum Mean Square Error (WMMSE) based approach. Achievable sum-Degree of Freedom (DoF) of RSMA is derived for the proposed framework as an increasing function of the number of transmitted common and private streams, which is further validated by the Ergodic Sum Rate (ESR) performance using Monte Carlo simulations. Conventional MU-MIMO based on linear precoders and Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) schemes are considered as baselines. Numerical results show that with imperfect CSIT, the sum-DoF and ESR performance of RSMA is superior than that of the two baselines, and is increasing with the number of transmitted common streams. Moreover, by better managing the interference, RSMA not only has significant ESR gains over baseline schemes but is more robust to CSIT inaccuracies, network loads and user deployments.

We consider globally optimal precoder design for rate splitting multiple access in Gaussian multiple-input single-output downlink channels with respect to weighted sum rate and energy efficiency maximization. The proposed algorithm solves an instance of the joint multicast and unicast beamforming problem and includes multicast- and unicast-only beamforming as special cases. Numerical results show that it outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of numerical stability and converges almost twice as fast.
We propose four hybrid combiner/precoder for downlink mmWave massive MU-MIMO systems. The design of a hybrid combiner/precoder is divided in two parts, analog and digital. The system baseband model shows that the signal processed by the mobile statio n can be interpreted as a received signal in the presence of colored Gaussian noise, therefore, since the digital part of the combiner and precoder do not have constraints for their generation, their designs can be based on any traditional signal processing that takes into account this kind of noise. To the best of our knowledge, this was not considered by previous works. A more realistic and appropriate design is described in this paper. Also, the approaches adopted in the literature for the designing of the combiner/precoder analog parts do not try to avoid or even reduce the inter user/symbol interference, they concentrate on increasing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We propose a simple solution that decreases the interference while maintaining large SNR. In addition, one of the proposed hybrid combiners reaches the maximum value of our objective function according with the Hadamards inequality. Numerical results illustrate the BER performance improvements resulting from our proposals. In addition, a simple detection approach can be used for data estimation without significant performance loss.
A novel rate splitting space division multiple access (SDMA) scheme based on grouped code index modulation (GrCIM) is proposed for the sixth generation (6G) downlink transmission. The proposed RSMA-GrCIM scheme transmits information to multiple user equipments (UEs) through the space division multiple access (SDMA) technique, and exploits code index modulation for rate splitting. Since the CIM scheme conveys information bits via the index of the selected Walsh code and binary phase shift keying (BPSK) signal, our RSMA scheme transmits the private messages of each user through the indices, and the common messages via the BPSK signal. Moreover, the Walsh code set is grouped into several orthogonal subsets to eliminate the interference from other users. A maximum likelihood (ML) detector is used to recovery the source bits, and a mathematical analysis is provided for the upper bound bit error ratio (BER) of each user. Comparisons are also made between our proposed scheme and the traditional SDMA scheme in spectrum utilization, number of available UEs, etc. Numerical results are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed SDMA-GrCIM scheme.
Rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) is a general multiple access scheme for downlink multi-antenna systems embracing both classical spatial division multiple access and more recent non-orthogonal multiple access. Finding a linear precoding strategy that maximizes the sum spectral efficiency of RSMA is a challenging yet significant problem. In this paper, we put forth a novel precoder design framework that jointly finds the linear precoders for the common and private messages for RSMA. Our approach is first to approximate the non-smooth minimum function part in the sum spectral efficiency of RSMA using a LogSumExp technique. Then, we reformulate the sum spectral efficiency maximization problem as a form of the log-sum of Rayleigh quotients to convert it into a tractable non-convex optimization problem. By interpreting the first-order optimality condition of the reformulated problem as an eigenvector-dependent nonlinear eigenvalue problem, we reveal that a leading eigenvector is a local optimal solution. To find the leading eigenvector, we propose a computationally efficient algorithm inspired by a power iteration method. Simulation results show that the proposed RSMA transmission strategy provides significant improvement in the sum spectral efficiency compared to the state-of-the-art RSMA transmission methods, while requiring considerably less computational complexity.
We consider a MIMO fading broadcast channel where the fading channel coefficients are constant over time-frequency blocks that span a coherent time $times$ a coherence bandwidth. In closed-loop systems, channel state information at transmitter (CSIT) is acquired by the downlink training sent by the base station and an explicit feedback from each user terminal. In open-loop systems, CSIT is obtained by exploiting uplink training and channel reciprocity. We use a tight closed-form lower bound on the ergodic achievable rate in the presence of CSIT errors in order to optimize the overall system throughput, by taking explicitly into account the overhead due to channel estimation and channel state feedback. Based on three time-frequency block models inspired by actual systems, we provide some useful guidelines for the overall system optimization. In particular, digital (quantized) feedback is found to offer a substantial advantage over analog (unquantized) feedback.
