A two-electron temperature plasma is produced by the method of diffusion of two different plasmas with distinct temperatures and densities. The method is simple and provides an adequate control over the plasma parameters. The study reveals that the temperature and density of both the electron groups can be effectively controlled by just changing the discharge currents of both the plasmas. An ion-acoustic (IA) wave is excited in the plasma and is detected using a planar Langmuir probe. The damped amplitude of the wave is measured and is used as a diagnostic tool for establishing the presence of two-electron components. This production method can be helpful in controlling the hot electron density and temperature in plasma processing industries.

Synchronized, independently tunable and focused $mu$J-class laser pulses are used to release multiple electron populations via photo-ionization inside an electron-beam driven plasma wave. By varying the laser foci in the laboratory frame and the posi tion of the underdense photocathodes in the co-moving frame, the delays between the produced bunches and their energies are adjusted. The resulting multibunches have ultra-high quality and brightness, allowing for hitherto impossible bunch configurations such as spatially overlapping bunch populations with strictly separated energies, which opens up a new regime for light sources such as free-electron-lasers.
Laser-plasma accelerators produce electric fields of the order of 100 GV/m, more than 1000 times larger than radio-frequency accelerators. Thanks to this unique field strength, they appear as a promising path to generate electron beams beyond the TeV , for high-energy physics. Yet, large electric fields are of little benefit if they are not maintained over a long distance. It is therefore of the utmost importance to guide the ultra-intense laser pulse that drives the accelerator. Reaching very high energies is equally useless if the properties of the electron beam change completely shot to shot. While present state-of-the-art laser-plasma accelerators can already separately address guiding and control challenges by tweaking the plasma structures, the production of beams combining high quality and high energy is yet to be demonstrated. Here we use a new approach for guiding the laser, and combined it with a controlled injection technique to demonstrate the reliable and efficient acceleration of high-quality electron beams up to 1.1 GeV, from a 50 TW-class laser.
Production of antihydrogen atoms by mixing antiprotons with a cold, confined, positron plasma depends critically on parameters such as the plasma density and temperature. We discuss non-destructive measurements, based on a novel, real-time analysis o f excited, low-order plasma modes, that provide comprehensive characterization of the positron plasma in the ATHENA antihydrogen apparatus. The plasma length, radius, density, and total particle number are obtained. Measurement and control of plasma temperature variations, and the application to antihydrogen production experiments are discussed.
The excitation and propagation of finite amplitude low frequency solitary waves are investigated in an Argon plasma impregnated with kaolin dust particles. A nonlinear longitudinal dust acoustic solitary wave is excited by pulse modulating the discha rge voltage with a negative potential. It is found that the velocity of the solitary wave increases and the width decreases with the increase of the modulating voltage, but the product of the solitary wave amplitude and the square of the width remains nearly constant. The experimental findings are compared with analytic soliton solutions of a model Kortweg-de Vries equation.

To better understanding the principal features of collisionless damping/growing plasma waves we have implemented a demonstrative calculation for the simplest cases of electron waves in two-stream plasmas with the delta-function type electron velocity distribution function of each of the streams with velocities v(1) and v(2). The traditional dispersion equation is reduced to an algebraic 4th order equation, for which numerical solutions are presented for a variant of equal stream densities. In the case of uniform half-infinite slab one finds two dominant type solutions: non-damping forward waves and forward complex conjugated exponentially both damping and growing waves. Beside it in this case there is no necessity of calculation any logarithmically divergent indefinite integrals. The possibility of wave amplifying might be useful in practical applications.
