Typical engineering design tasks require the effort to modify designs iteratively until they meet certain constraints, i.e., performance or attribute requirements. Past work has proposed ways to solve the inverse design problem, where desired designs are directly generated from specified requirements, thus avoid the trial and error process. Among those approaches, the conditional deep generative model shows great potential since 1) it works for complex high-dimensional designs and 2) it can generate multiple alternative designs given any condition. In this work, we propose a conditional deep generative model, Range-GAN, to achieve automatic design synthesis subject to range constraints. The proposed model addresses the sparse conditioning issue in data-driven inverse design problems by introducing a label-aware self-augmentation approach. We also propose a new uniformity loss to ensure generated designs evenly cover the given requirement range. Through a real-world example of constrained 3D shape generation, we show that the label-aware self-augmentation leads to an average improvement of 14% on the constraint satisfaction for generated 3D shapes, and the uniformity loss leads to a 125% average increase on the uniformity of generated shapes attributes. This work laid the foundation for data-driven inverse design problems where we consider range constraints and there are sparse regions in the condition space.

In this work, we present the Text Conditioned Auxiliary Classifier Generative Adversarial Network, (TAC-GAN) a text to image Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) for synthesizing images from their text descriptions. Former approaches have tried to co ndition the generative process on the textual data; but allying it to the usage of class information, known to diversify the generated samples and improve their structural coherence, has not been explored. We trained the presented TAC-GAN model on the Oxford-102 dataset of flowers, and evaluated the discriminability of the generated images with Inception-Score, as well as their diversity using the Multi-Scale Structural Similarity Index (MS-SSIM). Our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art models, i.e., its inception score is 3.45, corresponding to a relative increase of 7.8% compared to the recently introduced StackGan. A comparison of the mean MS-SSIM scores of the training and generated samples per class shows that our approach is able to generate highly diverse images with an average MS-SSIM of 0.14 over all generated classes.
The paper proposes a method to effectively fuse multi-exposure inputs and generates high-quality high dynamic range (HDR) images with unpaired datasets. Deep learning-based HDR image generation methods rely heavily on paired datasets. The ground trut h provides information for the network getting HDR images without ghosting. Datasets without ground truth are hard to apply to train deep neural networks. Recently, Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) have demonstrated their potentials of translating images from source domain X to target domain Y in the absence of paired examples. In this paper, we propose a GAN-based network for solving such problems while generating enjoyable HDR results, named UPHDR-GAN. The proposed method relaxes the constraint of paired dataset and learns the mapping from LDR domain to HDR domain. Although the pair data are missing, UPHDR-GAN can properly handle the ghosting artifacts caused by moving objects or misalignments with the help of modified GAN loss, improved discriminator network and useful initialization phase. The proposed method preserves the details of important regions and improves the total image perceptual quality. Qualitative and quantitative comparisons against other methods demonstrated the superiority of our method.
In this paper, we introduce a new method for generating an object image from text attributes on a desired location, when the base image is given. One step further to the existing studies on text-to-image generation mainly focusing on the objects appe arance, the proposed method aims to generate an object image preserving the given background information, which is the first attempt in this field. To tackle the problem, we propose a multi-conditional GAN (MC-GAN) which controls both the object and background information jointly. As a core component of MC-GAN, we propose a synthesis block which disentangles the object and background information in the training stage. This block enables MC-GAN to generate a realistic object image with the desired background by controlling the amount of the background information from the given base image using the foreground information from the text attributes. From the experiments with Caltech-200 bird and Oxford-102 flower datasets, we show that our model is able to generate photo-realistic images with a resolution of 128 x 128. The source code of MC-GAN is released.
Modern machine learning techniques, such as deep neural networks, are transforming many disciplines ranging from image recognition to language understanding, by uncovering patterns in big data and making accurate predictions. They have also shown pro mising results for synthesizing new designs, which is crucial for creating products and enabling innovation. Generative models, including generative adversarial networks (GANs), have proven to be effective for design synthesis with applications ranging from product design to metamaterial design. These automated computational design methods can support human designers, who typically create designs by a time-consuming process of iteratively exploring ideas using experience and heuristics. However, there are still challenges remaining in automatically synthesizing `creative designs. GAN models, however, are not capable of generating unique designs, a key to innovation and a major gap in AI-based design automation applications. This paper proposes an automated method, named CreativeGAN, for generating novel designs. It does so by identifying components that make a design unique and modifying a GAN model such that it becomes more likely to generate designs with identified unique components. The method combines state-of-art novelty detection, segmentation, novelty localization, rewriting, and generative models for creative design synthesis. Using a dataset of bicycle designs, we demonstrate that the method can create new bicycle designs with unique frames and handles, and generalize rare novelties to a broad set of designs. Our automated method requires no human intervention and demonstrates a way to rethink creative design synthesis and exploration.
Generative models are undoubtedly a hot topic in Artificial Intelligence, among which the most common type is Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). These architectures let one synthesise artificial datasets by implicitly modelling the underlying pr obability distribution of a real-world training dataset. With the introduction of Conditional GANs and their variants, these methods were extended to generating samples conditioned on ancillary information available for each sample within the dataset. From a practical standpoint, however, one might desire to generate data conditioned on partial information. That is, only a subset of the ancillary conditioning variables might be of interest when synthesising data. In this work, we argue that standard Conditional GANs are not suitable for such a task and propose a new Adversarial Network architecture and training strategy to deal with the ensuing problems. Experiments illustrating the value of the proposed approach in digit and face image synthesis under partial conditioning information are presented, showing that the proposed method can effectively outperform the standard approach under these circumstances.
