Carrier doping to the Mott insulator is essential to produce highly correlated metals with emergent properties. Pyrochlore ruthenates, Pr$_{2}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (Ru-$4d$ electron number, $n=4$) and Ca$_{2}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$ ($n=3$), are a Mott insulator and a magnetic bad metal, respectively, due to the strong electron correlation. We investigate magneto-transport properties of (Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)$_{2}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$ in a whole band-filling range, $0<x<1$. With increasing hole-doping $x$, the system undergoes an insulator-metal transition. When Ca$_{2}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$ is doped with electrons ($0.5<x<0.9$), the enhanced coupling among Ru-$4d$ spins produces a ferromagnetic-metal phase with a large anomalous-Hall angle up to 2 %. We discuss the electronic phase transitions in (Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)$_{2}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$ in view of Hunds metal.

A current of electrons traversing a landscape of localized spins possessing non-coplanar magnetic order gains a geometrical (Berry) phase which can lead to a Hall voltage independent of the spin-orbit coupling within the material--a geometrical Hall effect. We show that the highly-correlated metal UCu5 possesses an unusually large controllable geometrical Hall effect at T<1.2K due to its frustration-induced magnetic order. The magnitude of the Hall response exceeds 20% of the u=1 quantum Hall effect per atomic layer, which translates into an effective magnetic field of several hundred Tesla acting on the electrons. The existence of such a large geometric Hall response in UCu5 opens a new field of inquiry into the importance of the role of frustration in highly-correlated electron materials.
We present magnetization and Hall effect measurements on the pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7. Previous muon spin rotation measurements have shown that the system undergoes an unusual transition at T$_M$ = 110 K into a magnetic phase lacking long-range or der, followed by a transition at T$_LRO$ = 6 K into a state with long-range magnetic order. We observe a small remnant magnetization when cycling through zero magnetic field at temperatures below T$_M$. Below T$_LRO$, this remnant magnetization increases sharply, and new hysteresis effects appear at a higher field B$_c$ = 2.5 T, while the Hall resistance develops a non-monotonic and hysteretic magnetic field dependence, with a maximum at B$_c$ and signatures of an anomalous Hall effect. The dependence on field sweep direction demonstrates a non-trivial transition into a magnetically ordered state with properties paralleling those of known spin-ice systems and suggests a spin reorientation transition across the metal insulator transition in the A-227 series.
The rich physics manifested by 5d oxides falls outside the Mott-Hubbard paradigm used to successfully explain the electronic and magnetic properties of 3d oxides. Much consideration has been given to the extent to which strong spin-orbit coupling (SO C), in the limit of increased bandwidth and reduced electron correlation, drives the formation of novel electronic states, as manifested through the existence of metal-insulator transitions (MITs). SOC is believed to play a dominant role in 5d5 systems such as iridates (Ir4+), undergoing MITs which may or may not be intimately connected to magnetic order, with pyrochlore and perovksite systems being examples of the former and latter, respectively. However, the role of SOC for other 5d configurations is less clear. For example, 5d3 (e.g Os5+) systems are expected to have an orbital singlet and consequently a reduced effect of SOC in the groundstate. The pyrochlore osmate Cd2Os2O7 nonetheless exhibits a MIT intimately entwined with magnetic order with phenomena similar to pyrochlore iridates. Here we report the first resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements on an osmium compound, allowing us to determine the salient electronic and magnetic energy scales controlling the MIT in Cd2Os2O7, which we benchmark against detailed quantum chemistry calculations. In particular, we reveal the emergence at the MIT of a magnetic excitation corresponding to a superposition of multiple spin-flip processes from an Ising-like all-in/all-out magnetic groundstate. We discuss our results with respect to the role of SOC in magnetically mediated MITs in 5d systems
We directly measure the chemical potential jump in the low-temperature limit when the filling factor traverses the nu = 1/3 and nu = 2/5 fractional gaps in two-dimensional (2D) electron system in GaAs/AlGaAs single heterojunctions. In high magnetic f ields B, both gaps are linear functions of B with slopes proportional to the inverse fraction denominator, 1/q. The fractional gaps close partially when the Fermi level lies outside. An empirical analysis indicates that the chemical potential jump for an IDEAL 2D electron system, in the highest accessible magnetic fields, is proportional to q^{-1}B^{1/2}.
When nanometric, noncoplanar spin textures with scalar spin chirality (SSC) are coupled to itinerant electrons, they endow the quasiparticle wavefunctions with a gauge field, termed Berry curvature, in a way that bears analogy to relativistic spin-or bit coupling (SOC). The resulting deflection of moving charge carriers is termed geometrical (or topological) Hall effect. Previous experimental studies modeled this signal as a real-space motion of wavepackets under the influence of a quantum-mechanical phase. In contrast, we here compare the modification of Bloch waves themselves, and of their energy dispersion, due to SOC and SSC. Using the canted pyrochlore ferromagnet Nd$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ as a model compound, our transport experiments and first-principle calculations show that SOC impartially mixes electronic bands with equal or opposite spin, while SSC is much more effective for opposite spin band pairs.
